Central fires leave four children among the dead

TRAGIC: Sarah, left, Moses, centre, and Chayim Chinapoo were among the six who died in a fire which destroyed their home at McBean, Couva, yesterday.

Seven people died in two house fires in Central Trinidad between Friday night and yesterday morning. Four of the dead are children.

At Mc Bean, Couva, just after midnight yesterday, the roof of the burning home collapsed upon 13-year-old Sarah Chinapoo, 10-year-old Chayim Chinapoo, 8-year-old Moses Chinapoo, 2 1/2-year-old Elijah Narine, 22-year-old Shantelle Dixon and 32-year-old Vanessa Chinapoo. They had huddled in the bathroom of the house, hoping for protection from the flames, and waiting to be rescued.

They were all killed. The bodies were found in a death embrace. Chinapoo was pregnant. Her baby was due in three weeks’ time.

The only survivor of the horror was Chinapoo’s husband, Darren Dixon.

He was step-father to three of the dead children. Dixon said he tried  everything to save his family but failed. The burglar proofing that secured the front door and windows against thieves turned out to be a death trap for them, he said. (See related story).

Two hours earlier at Pierre Road, Charlieville, 58-year-old Katwaroo Bahadur also burned to death when his small home went up in flames.

Bahadur’s neighbours tried dousing the flames before fire fighters arrived. They failed and his body fell through the burnt-out floor boards as the home he shared with his sister was destroyed.

The Mc Bean fire follows the tragedy of last year when a fire, the cause of which has never been determined, killed four members of the family of 10-year-old kidnap victim Vijay Persad, at Indian Walk Village, Moruga.

Trinidad has become the land of tragedy. There is nothing but death and destruction of what was once a proud nation. As long as we continue to be governed by leaders who do not put the interest of the people first this atrocity will continue. If we continue to do the same thing over and over we will continue to produce the same results. Change the leadership and you will change the results

Smoke Detectors Posted: 2009-08-23 00:30:00 AM
There needs to be a campaign where all homes are equipped with smoke dectors to warn people.
Recent Fires in Trinidad and Tobago Posted: 2009-08-23 01:13:00 AM
It should be bought to the attention of the Government that the Fire Services of Trinidad and Tobago are not capable and responsible enough to deal with emergencies when call upon. Having been a victim of this with them arriving at a scene with half tank of water and no siren with the back-up tender they will continue to allow the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago to have massive losses when this occurs. They need to be properly monitored since they are too relax as an emergency service.
fiery deaths-burglar proofing,etc,etc.... Posted: 2009-08-23 02:02:00 AM
People do not live in burglar proffing in the developed world-vision 2020! The failure of the state to provide the security (& safety)makes gruesome statitics.
FIERY DEATH Posted: 2009-08-23 01:08:00 AM
My condolenses and my heart goes out to the bereaved Chinapoo family, especially the husband.I saw the hurt and the pain on this gentleman's face yesterday.I hope that God gives him the will and the strenght to move on,because it won,t be easy.He thought his family were outside the house but they were trapped inside. The very same burglar proofing that protects us from intruders sometimes turns into a death trap for us.It,s so sad.
Evacuation Plan Posted: 2009-08-23 06:58:00 AM
In all major workplaces there is an emergency plan. This is a must according to the OSHA law.Maybe it is time that this is also done in private homes, for this is not the first time that T&T has experienced such a tradegy. How about each household sit today to plan an emergency route, how to deal with the burglar proofing issue and fire, how to deal with flooding etc. In some areas, even neighbours can come together and discuss an emergency plan. I think that we need this urgently.I intend to start today.

Hello Posted: 2009-08-23 09:03:00 AM
Would it help if our Oil-Rich nation of Trinidad could afford to open more Fire Stations?
blame Posted: 2009-08-23 09:00:00 AM
the ones to be held responsible for this tragedy should be town and country. it is time they live up to their mandate and ensure the safety of all citizen in t&t. lots of houses are burglar proofed without safety for the occupants in mind. a standard should be set. these things should be inspected.
WHEN WILL THEY LEARN Posted: 2009-08-23 06:55:00 AM
The so-called burglar-proofing as practised in T&T gives the occupants of such "protected homes" a sense of false security. All this practice does is provide the occupants of such burglar-proofed homes with their private jail cell and a fire trap. This practice removes from neighbours the sense of responsibility they should feel to look out for each other. Neighbours become "don't-care" strangers , selfish and uncaring with the "I'll-take-care-of-me-and-mine" approach to life. Well, they are reaping what they have sowed as attested to by the continuously rising crime rate and increasing number of deaths from home fires. Where security is concerned, the only practice that really works all the time is the "I am my neighbours' keeper" approach to living in and outside one's community. Until such time as the citizens of T&T return to their old approach to living their lives where personal security is concerned, real enduring security will remain illusive. TRINI IN CANADA
Its sad Posted: 2009-08-23 12:40:00 AM
It hurts me to see innocent lives being lost by any means.god bless the remainder of this family and the lives that were lost.I hope that the government can organise a fund or help programme that can assist persons that have lost their homes to disasters like these.as a member of the defence force I think that the government should give the army the tools and resources to rebuild these destroyed homes.

Death by fire of the Chinapoo family Posted: 2009-08-23 12:39:00 AM
I am so traumatised by the death of the Chinapoo family who were all friends of mine and my children. May they all reast in peace and comfort be given to the survivors.
THIS IS JUST A DREAM I HAD. Posted: 2009-08-23 2:26:00 PM
MY DREAM: I was Prime Minister of T@T.I ordered all citizens to remove their Burglar-Proofing from their homes.I would then cause a law to be passed;if anyone is caught,or found guilty of house-breaking,they would be executed.Anyone using an illegal gun,or other deadly weapon to commit assault of murder, would also be executed. The same swift and definitive action taken against Constable Auguste, must be applied, whether,or not it was me(the P.M)who was the victim. As your P.M, I would cause an attempt on my life,to prove that my claim one year ago is true.At least I would be a pro-active P.M.Finally,I would extend my condolences to this family and pay all expenses pertaining to this sad incident, since I failed them.Aubert Modeste
