Policeman in court for 'stealing' patrol vehicle

A police constable will appear in court today charged in connection with an incident in which he took a police patrol SUV without permission, crashed the vehicle and returned the keys to the station, pretending none of it ever happened.

The 23-year-old officer has been in the Police Service for eight months.

It is alleged that he took a Ford Everest-one of a fleet of $400,000 SUVs that were bought for the Summit of the Americas-without the permission of his seniors.

The swipe happened from the motor pool of the San Fernando Police Station on Sunday afternoon.

No one knew the vehicle had been taken until late that evening, when residents of Rousillac Village, La Brea, reported seeing the vehicle being driven back and forth along the Main Road, until the front tyre blew out and the vehicle was abandoned near the home of a magistrate. Residents reported seeing two men leave the vehicle.

Police officers responded to what they believed was a report that a police vehicle was hijacked by thieves. The road leading to the vehicle was cordoned off with crime-scene tape, and crime scene experts dusted the vehicle for prints.

Stolen police vehicle.. Transfer him, the usual solution. Posted: 2009-08-24 9:16:00 PM
Transfer him to the Point Fortin Police station, I am sure when he gets there he will understand that he just cannot go around taking things that doesn’t belong to him. By the way concerning the damaged vehicle, let the Tax Payers pay for that, that’s their sole responsibility as citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. He just needs a change of scenery to set him straight right?, Amen. Lloyd C. Johnson US Army Retired, Germany

Sheer recklessness Posted: 2009-08-25 06:05:00 AM
A $400,000 vehicle disposed of by a 23-year old police officer - just like that. This is what taxpaying citizens are getting for their hard earned money; reckless officers with no regard for the laws that they have to uphold. I'm sure he wouldn't even get a slap on the wrist. How are citizens supposed to respect police officers after they behave in this manner? Mr. Reyes please give us well-educated, intelligent and friendly officers with integrity who can deal with citizens and treat them as human beings. I know it's a stretch but is it possible to have tougher screenings? We want a properly functioning Police Service. We beg you.
protect and serve who? Posted: 2009-08-25 07:33:00 AM
Could you imagine this what is going to take place next , maybe the police service needs to become more serious with their police officers and who the bring into the service, after all they are suppose to protect and serve

Please be lenient on the young man. Most of us have engaged in some really stupid and regreattable things whilst transitioning to adulthood. I am sure that he is willing to repair the vehicle and face whatever disciplinary action (along with the shame). Expulsion from the force should be really a last resort.
Re: Stealing Patrol Vehicle Posted: 2009-08-25 2:22:00 PM
What a load of balony? This young man should be dealt with very severely. He is a Police Officer for god sake what the hell was he thinking? Do'nt spear the rod and spoil the child if you do so, it will be the beginning of things to come. He had it too damn easy.
Re: Stealing Patrol Vehicle Posted: 2009-08-25 5:48:00 PM
Be lenient are you serious --he suppose to protect the people -his mind not ready to police office -he is a child --fire him and lock him up so the other police officer will get the message zero tolerance--u no what that mean ?
Huh! Posted: 2009-08-25 07:38:00 AM
Well if this isn't Karma, then what is?? Maybe, there are little green men running around the Island blowing out tires with invisible arrows..
POLICE VEHICLE Posted: 2009-08-25 06:45:00 AM
Is this a joke? It's either the older heads got to him early, or he was already corrupted when he enlisted. What is going on?

This is insane. The level of irresponsibility is beyond words. It leads one to question what checks and balances are in place at police stations for accountability. Perhaps it is time that policemen start accounting for the location of vehicles and what was being investigated, WITH PROOF, when reports are made and the response is "We have no vehicles." This type of behaviour is not uncommon in the Police Force as one can see police vehicles at "limes" and in fast food places but rarely available when there is actually a genuine Police emergency.

that is really embarrassing for the police service

jail him, seek restitution, no future public office positions, put his face on the news

The police always dust crime scenes for fingerprints. I wonder if there is an automated fingerprint id database for these prints to be corroborated. If not, then it makes no sense, because the prints would just lay there until someone is arrested--and we all know what the arrest rate is. The TT Police Service needs to be modernized which will go a long way in crime-solving. CCTVs,blimps,radar-equipped vessels etc. were all implemented and the results are all there to see.

Pink slip for him. No questions asked. He should have been leading by example.
Order Posted: 2009-08-25 2:46:00 PM
Order is not the main frame of the day with the law and citizens alike. The comment that citizens who pay taxes for infrastructure, medical and housing should not be used as scapegoats for such a reckless and irresponsible act. I say charge the expenses to his salary. He does'nt need to be fired, but you do still have to question his integrity.

You are being sarcastic??? In transition to adulthood! not when you have already sworn to protect and serve. save dat for a 12 year old, not a 23 year old adult. there is no room for leniency in these times. dispose of the bad seeds immediately!
