A search of houses in the Morvant area by the police on Monday has netted several high-powered firearms, an assortment of ammunition and camouflage pants.

The team of officers from the North Eastern Divisional Task Force (NEDTF), led by Cpl Darryl La Pierre and including PCs Sunil Bharath, Patrick Antoine, Sheldon Daniel, Andre Constantine and Jason Lavia, along with officers of the Special Anti-Crime Unit (SAUTT) and Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) conducted the exercise.

Reports state the officers went to a bushy area in Second Caledonia where they found an AK-47, two pistols, a shotgun and over 100 rounds of an assortment of ammunition hidden inside an abandoned house. No one was arrested.

Several searches of houses in the area also netted a pair of camouflage pants. A 24-year-old Barataria man was also held on various outstanding warrants for shooting and robbery offences during the exercise.

It was while searching the compound of another house that officers also found an automatic firearm, a pistol and shotgun, along with shotgun cartridges hidden in a fig patch.

The compound on which the items were seized, sources say, belongs to a 24-year-old man who is currently on bail for possession of a firearm.

The man was also questioned in connection with the February 2007 killings of WPC Elizabeth Sutherland, her husband, Ivan, daughter Anika and family friend Kevin Serrette.

Apart from this, sources say the suspect is currently facing a charge of pointing a firearm at a police constable who is attached to the Santa Cruz Police Station.

Meanwhile, a fourth suspect wanted in connection with the murder of Morvant gang leader Sean ’Bill’ Francis is expected to appear before a Port of Spain Magistrate today.

The suspect was held around 11 a.m. yesterday while seated in a car with another man in Petit Bourg.

He was held during an exercise conducted by the same team of officers who confiscated the arms and ammunition.

Police, acting on information, said the team went to Laventille Road, San Juan, where they spotted the 26-year old Vegas, Morvant, suspect seated in an Almera car.

The suspect and his friend were then taken to the Morvant CID where they were interrogated.
