South Bureau

At the end of a narrow gravel track in an abandoned canefield, the van belonging to missing 73-year-old businessman Eric Sooklal was found yesterday. The cab of the vehicle was torched, police said.

Before it was removed to the San Fernando Police Station, the green and silver coloured van was dusted for clues.

Sooklal was reported missing by his relatives on Wednesday night.

Police said the elderly man was headed to his businessplace, Sooklal’s Enterprises, at Duncan Village, La Romaine, to feed his dogs.

He lives with family at Roberts Road, Philippine.

His nephew Partap Singh said they received a call yesterday that his uncle’s Mitsubishi van was found in a canefield.

At the family’s home relatives were reluctant to speak about the incident. ’We were instructed by the police not to give out any information, since it might hinder the investigations,’ a relative said.

The relative said Sooklal’s children lived in the Unites States and were expected to return this morning.

No ransom calls have been made to the family, police said.

Officers from the San Fernando CID and the Anti-Kidnapping Squad are continuing investigations.

Take a bow, Minister of National Securidy... Posted: 2009-08-28 05:15:00 AM
Both the Minister of National Securidy as well as our Prime Minister should hang their heads in shame for this and all other acts of violence perpetrated against people in this beautiful country of ours. Instead of doing comparative reports to show how far down the ladder we are, they should treat this burning issue of crime as a number one priority.

The van was dusted for evedience, but why waste even that little time on any victim? or play games with the victims family? what are the police going to match the finger prints against? they never find any body who does commit a crime so the data base will be empty. what a joke
Doesn't look good... Posted: 2009-08-28 09:45:00 AM

Bring back the death penalty and Trinidad would be a paradise Posted: 2009-08-28 10:42:00 AM
It is so sickening to read the Trinidad online news daily. The kind of crime that we are reading about each day is unthinkable. Why one may ask? The simple reason is that there is no stiff penalty for criminals, therefore the will continue to kill as they wish. I cannot understand why the govenment cannot find the solution to the crimes in Trinidad. DEATH PENALTY PLEASE.

It's about time we stop using tax-payers money to house and feed these criminals IF they are caught. Rediculous times call for rediculous measures. As far as I see it.. Rape, Kidnapping and Murder... you should be executed. Maybe that will deter these criminals! Citizens should not be paying for them to live!
