The man who allegedly tried to rob a woman who fought him off and took away his shotgun, appeared in court yesterday.
Nathan Nicholas De Freitas, 21, was arrested last week Monday, near the Williamville home of his alleged victim, 41-year-old Dianne Baptiste.
He turned up at the Princes Town Magistrates’ Court charged with the possession of a home-made shotgun, possession of ammunition and assaulting Baptiste with intent to rob her.
The charges were laid by Detective Sergeant Don Gajadhar.
Baptiste, a Williamsville caterer, allegedly suffered injuries to a finger and toe during her fight back and has been cited as a witness in the case.
Baptiste also received a call from Acting Police Commissioner James Philbert the day after the incident.
She believes that the police officers who responded and arrested her alleged alleged attacker, should be commended.
De Freitas, of Five Rivers Arouca, and Pedro Trace, Valencia, appeared before Princes Town First Court Magistrate Indrani Cedeno. He pleaded not guilty.
Bail was refused after the police revealed his criminal history.
De Freitas, who hired no lawyer, has two convictions and nine pending charges for kidnapping, armed robbery, drug possession and larceny.
The charges are pending in the Couva, Chaguanas, Arima and Sangre Grande Magistrates’ Courts.
De Freitas was remanded in prison custody. He will reappear at the Princes Town court on September 11.
