WOMAN JUMPS OFF FERRY
Drama as 'T&T Spirit' sails from Tobago

LUCKY: An ambulance exits the T&T Spirit ferry last night with Emris Simon (inset) after the boat docked in Port of Spain yesterday evening. Simon jumped off the boat mid-way between Tobago and Trinidad and was rescued. -Photo: MICHEAL BRUCE

AN UNFORGIVABLE sin is what Emris Simon told rescuers pushed her to jump off the inter-island ferry, the T&T Spirit, while it was in mid-journey to Trinidad yesterday.

Simon, 59, was among hundreds of passengers who were booked to travel on the inter-island ferry .

The T&T Spirit was scheduled to leave Scarborough in Tobago on its way to Port of Spain around 1.30 p.m. yesterday.

However, the ship never set sail until 2.55 p.m, passengers on the vessel complained yesterday.

Simon was seated at the back of the boat when it eventually left the port, eyewitnesses said. Then 20 minutes into the journey, the unthinkable happened. Simon got up from her seat, climbed the ship’s railing and dived into the water, an eyewitness said.

Several other passengers who were at the back of the boat looked on in shock.

A few young passengers however responded to the death defying dive and informed the crew of the incident.

’We were seated inside the boat and then some boys ran in and said that a woman had jumped off the boat,’ a passenger, who requested anonymity, told the Express when the ship docked in Port of Spain around 6.30 p.m. yesterday.

’The boys ran to the bartenders and told them that a woman was in the water,’ the passenger said. The crew swung into action.

The boat which was speeding toward Trinidad was said to have been close to 400 metres away from Simon from where she was in the water, eyewitnesses said.

A life raft with three crew members was lowered into the water, while the T&T Spirit was stopped.

The crew were able to save Simon who screamed that she did not want to be saved because God would not forgive her for what she had done, a source said.

Simon never told the crew what that unforgivable sin was.

But she insisted that death was her only option for salvation, the source said.

The inter-island ferry turned around and Simon was safely taken back on board.

The two-and-a-half hours that it usually takes the ferry to travel between the two islands took some four hours yesterday.

Around 6.30 p.m. when the ferry docked, and an ambulance was positioned to care for Simon as she was taken off the boat.

Simon was said to be in a satisfactory condition at the Port of Spain General Hospital.

Many passengers that the Express spoke to yesterday expressed shock over the incident and surprise that Simon was still alive after the incident.

Co-ordinator of Vessivny Viking Sailing Team, Betty Suite, who was on the vessel said it was a traumatic situation for her and fellow members.

Deputy CEO of the Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago, Leon Grant, commended the ship’s crew for their prompt response to the incident.

Further investigations into the matter are to be conducted.

I pray you find peace Posted: 2009-08-27 8:20:00 PM
My advice to that lady is that she needs to pray harder. Only God forgives. I too have sinned and I ask him every day and night to have mercy on me. Don't try to kill yourself, that will not solve anything. Pray harder sister and I pray you find peace.

God Forgives You Simon Posted: 2009-08-28 01:36:00 AM
It doesn't matter how much you think you have sinned, or how far you think you have gone; God still love you. And as far as the east is from the west,so far has He removed your sins. Don't think that God don't loves you, He does. And He can forgive any sin you may have committed. Be Bless!

I hope this is not a signal for copy cats as this event can be traumatic for passengers.Maybe the ship's captain will institute strigent rules for passengers who frequent the ship's stern on its voyage.Luckily the sailing was in the day and not at night.

unforgivable Posted: 2009-08-28 06:43:00 AM
this woman conscience must surely be disturbing her. she would try to do it again if someone cant convince her, that the only thing unforgivable is if you cant forgive urself. stop tell lie pon God that he would not forgive. as long as life exist, with him are always second chances........trini back home!
Well done! Posted: 2009-08-28 08:15:00 AM
I'm so proud of those crew members for leaping into action. I hope our President issue a statement of recognition for the crew members. And that woman needs to get some serious mental evaluations done asap.
Wonderful job!! Posted: 2009-08-28 04:26:00 AM
Great work by the crew, they have certainly proved that they're not only the crew but lifesavers also.
Mercy Said No Posted: 2009-08-28 07:21:00 AM
This is a sad and touching story. Sometimes I feel as though God doesn't hear me, or may not have forgiven me. Then I realise it's another lie of the enemy, and thank God for his mercy that endures forever. I pray for that lady, and some how just have a feeling that God is now going to do something marvelous, miraculous and incredible in her life. She went into the water and now she will be filled with the Holy Spirit to bring others to repentance and God's love. I want you all to listen to a song (download it on youtube), by Cece Winan, "Mercy Said No". God Bless!

One can only think of what this unforgivable sin can be. It takes a lot of courage to take your own life, but a coward runs away from their problems. This life's journey is NOT AN EASY ONE, some of us take the easy way out and end it prematurely and some of us are brave and stick it out to the end. Which one do you choose? Bravery or cowardice.
Nothing short of heroes. Posted: 2009-08-28 08:01:00 AM
Thank God that woman is safe. The crew quick response deserve hero status. I hope that woman get the psychological help she needs. I am happy she was saved by the heroes and professionals that run the ship. Creese, Boston. USA

WOMAN JUMPS OFF FERRY Posted: 2009-08-28 09:04:00 AM
Miss Simon no matter your situation in life God loves you and there is no sin too big or too small for him to forgive. Do not be so harsh on yourself. Talk to him, he is only a prayer away.

Lady Jumping Off Boat Posted: 2009-08-28 07:58:00 AM
This is sad to reach that place where you don't believe that you can go on. At times the cry for help is there and nobody ever responds or they laugh, I am sure some people must be laughing at this lady, but it isn't funny. Nobody knows what her anguish is and I pray that she is ok.
Isaiah 1:18 Posted: 2009-08-28 10:43:00 AM
"Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." God is all forgiving, he will forgive you. Matthew 18: 15 - Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. 16 - But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. 17 - And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.
Prosecute her Posted: 2009-08-28 11:05:00 AM
Can the Port Authoity initiate a court case agains her?
Re: Prosecute her Posted: 2009-08-28 1:43:00 PM
On the contrary she might take out a law suite on the port since they rescued her against her wish.
WOMAN JUMPS OFF FERRY Posted: 2009-08-28 11:54:00 AM
Where are the religious leaders of this country. How can they advise this woman who claims to have committed a bad sin, and in turn decided to commit a worse sin by committing sucide.Let us hear what you have to say.Catholic priests,Muslims and Hindus.Let us hear from you.Now is time to establish your phylosophical advice from scriptual injunctions, and not fabrications.Quote your scriptures verses. This is a challenge to make a name for your respective religion. We don't want beliefs.Beliefs are not substantial, we are looking for bonifide principles that are logical that makes universal sense for the sake of humanity.
unforgivable Posted: 2009-08-28 1:19:00 PM
The only sin that is unforgiveable is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. And even so that is between that person and God. Every other sin is forgiveable by Almighty God. No man has the power to tell another person that his/her sins cannot be forgiven - not if it is a Christian church.
Another case of poor Social Development and Care opportunities Posted: 2009-08-28 12:07:00 AM
We are in desperate need of social development and care programmes. There are too many incidents of crime toward other persons and self. I am not blaming the government, however there is a gap that needs to be filled. This woman needs psychology / psychiatric treatment before she does further harm to herself and/or others as she is obviously ill.
Luckey Posted: 2009-08-28 2:37:00 PM
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me,remember that hymn. The lord already forgave you by giving that crew the know how to get you safe and sound. When the lord can;t make it someone will be sent. Now it is your turn to do good.
Woman jumping of ferry Posted: 2009-08-28 1:41:00 PM
I would just like to say to this lady and others who ae troubled in life, remember and believe this christ died for your sins. you don't have to die for yours.
Just plain mad? Posted: 2009-08-28 09:47:00 AM
All these people quick to offer up religion and quote scripture. Why couldn't this woman be nothing but insane and need psychiatric help? But then again I think I know the answer even if is mad she mad.
disciples Posted: 2009-08-28 10:08:00 AM
Yet another example of militant faith(ie a suspension of critical faculties). Well, this lady jumped for salvation. She literally JUMPED FOR JESUS. Anymore disciples?
Woman jump overboard ship. Posted: 2009-08-28 4:33:00 PM
The person who suggested that the lady is crazy does not know what she is dealing with,do pray for her emotional healing.
woman overborad Posted: 2009-08-28 4:41:00 PM
If the premise that One person really did die for everybody's sin - shouldn't the world currently be sinless? But it isn't. So this means that each of us is still answerable for everything we choose to do and choose not to do. Suicide is a cop-out of culpability.
Poor lady... Posted: 2009-08-28 4:58:00 PM
