The woman who was shot in the head and killed on Friday evening was trying to convince her killer to turn his life around, police said yesterday.
Ornella Nanton, 19, was heard begging the man to put down his weapon and change his lifestyle. The man, however, turned the gun on Nanton and fired a shot.
Nanton, who had several addresses, was seated in the front passenger seat of a silver-grey Nissan Almera car. The driver, Richard Murrain, who was also wounded, managed to drive to the St Margaret’s Police Station. The killer ran through some bushes and escaped.
The shooting happened at St John’s Trace, Claxton Bay, around 5.30 p.m.
Murrain told police that he picked up Nanton in San Fernando. She asked to be taken to a friend’s house at St John’s Trace.
Villagers said they heard the commotion, but did not think the man would shoot Nanton.
Murrain parked his car in front of the police station and ran into the charge room. But by the time officers ran outside, Nanton was already dead. Murrain was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital, where he was treated and allowed to go home.
