128 schols for South, Central

Secondary schools in South and Central Trinidad continued its tradition of high performance in academics yesterday with 128 students receiving national scholarships.

It follows the trend of primary schools in South and Central Trinidad securing the most number of top performing students at the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA).

And it was the Naparima Girls’ High School again that led all schools with nine open scholarships and 21 additional scholarships.

Naparima College students copped nine open scholarships and seven additional scholarships.

St Joseph’s Convent, San Fernando received four open and seven additional scholarships.

Principal of Naparima Girls’, Patricia Ramgoolam, said the school was very happy with the number of scholarships received.

’They have worked very hard and it is always a good feeling when we do so well.’

She said the school received scholarships in seven of the 10 subject areas which shows that it was performing in every area.

Last year Naparima Girls’ topped the country with six open and 22 additional scholarships, which included the President’s Medal, making it the most scholarships the school had ever won in one year, while the boys at Naparima College got 20 with two open scholarships, making it the top boys’ school in the country.

Congratulations to all schools with students winning scholarships. While the article alludes to central schools, there is no information about the central schools which recieved scholarships or the names of the students who achieved these meritorious awards. This information will be greatly appreciated.

AS a past student of Naparima College I'm proud to seee their success continue. I would love to see the government assess financial need in addition to academic merit when awarding these scholarships though.

Why the distinction? Posted: 2009-09-04 12:00:00 AM
Is this some tribal chest thumping disguised as an article? Is it the location of the schools or the dedication of the students, teachers & principals?
