Property Tax.

How could Ms finance Minister tax property based on how much it could be rented for ? and not how much the property is actually worth ? Callous does not even come close to what this Government is doing to the Average citizen of Trinidad & Tobago.
When we pay more Taxes, will we be
safe in the homes we will be so heavily taxed on ? Will the Police have vehicles to come to our Aid ? Could we Trust the men in Uniform that come to our homes ? Would there be enough Police That do their Jobs ? We are paying their wages Right?
Would we get better Health Care ? Exactly what will we be getting for this Tax Grab ? Would we get what we will be paying for ?
Are you on Earth or in the Zone?
Just wondering. As a Retired Property Owner on a Fixed Income. A Sad day for people like me. Sad Indeed.

How cruel and vindictive this Government is.There are so many poor families who are struggling to pay rent, feed their children, buy school supplies etc. With the rise in taxes every one of us will suffer.Rent will go up,food will cost more everything we buy we will have to pay more. These people have no heart. |

Ms.Nunez, is not on this budget alone folks.Mr. Manning, is behind it playing ball.Manning, will be a fool to
present a budget with an increase in taxes, and then call elections.Everyone is forgetting he deliberately delayed the elections. That is for a purpose. The budget and the elections are intertwine.Nunez,is a secondary player.Manning, is the main man on this budget. The budget is very important for the country, and could be devastaing for the PNM.You think Manning wants to loose the elections. He is comfortable in his new house. Will be there untill he is feeble and can run again.

This is the first time that I have seen a budget being presented like it was parliament meeting with picong throwing. The presented did not seem serious either. I thought it was disrespectful to people to the public to be joking and the raising of property tax so high is unjust. |

This Finance Minister seems to live in a dream state. When she was warned about the oil prices, she never listened and let us not mention CLICO. Now to ask when will be the right time is a shocking question from a so-called intellectual. Everything has a timing and now is definitely not the right time for hiking property taxes to that extent. They are trying to use the citizens to make up the shortfall that was experienced from the waste of time Summit that almost drained our coffers. Pig-headedness seems to be the order of the day with this aloof, out of touch government. From their track record, all I can say is let the next elections come quickly. By then many may wake up too! |

What a can of worms she has opened! Who will assess the equivalent rental values of owners' self inhabited houses? For example in my view a house costing $100,000 in Toco will have lower rents in Toco than one in POS. Even if the houses are in Toco, they may have different rents. One of the pillars of taxation is: it must be fair and equitable. It is fair to say that this tax will not be equitable. |

I agree that the Govt is callous, I consider myself part of the middle class or lower working class. I've recently taken a mortgage for the rest of my working life to build my own home, now with the financial situation they are raising the property taxes! Ridiculous, how many of us have taken salary cuts to keep a job now bills are increasing. First electricity, food, and now property. |

The people of T+T should fight against this increase in property taxes .It would lead to a lot of people loosing their property for unpaid taxes. This is the way it is done in the USA , it causes undue stress especially on the poor.We introduced an american style education system years ago and that is responsible for many of the problems that we now have. |

This is an unbelievable budget from a gov't that does not cease to astound the people.
Citizens are already paying higher property insurance and costs due to the lack of control over crime from the gov't. And now, the gov't imposes an additional tax? Amazing! Absolutely amazing!
Guess who will be paying this tax? Not the folks committing thew crime from the crime ridden areas. But, those who have labored arduously to build a nest egg under dire circumstances.
No, No. Not the " every day carnival partying people".
Great budget but they will be voted back in anyhow and they know it. No sense of accountability. |

This seems as just another way to tax some of the people of TnT unjustly.
I wonder what portion or percentage of the population actually own their homes.
Lots of questions on this Mrs. Tesheira.
Just how much Tax Revenue have the Government projected for this ?
How will they determine who pays ?
Who will be doing the valuation of the property ?
Are they verifying if the homes are actually bringing in income via rent ?
Not everyone rents their home, If I am not using my home to bring in income, Why should the same criteria apply to me ?
Will they be looking at the actual salares of homeowners who do not rent their homes ?
If someone inherits a home and has a minimum wage salary, will they have to eventually sell ther homes to pay the taxes ?
What about apartent buildings, how will that be handled ?
What about persons with serveral homes ?
What about squatters ?
What about politicians, they raise the taxes but are they going to pay as well.(some of them have multiple homes and land area).

Good timing Mrs. Nunez-Tesheira.
You have to find the money somewhere to pay for the enormous government sepnding.
When bsinesses pass on these taxes to their customers it will fuel inflation. as you big business does not normally absorb additional costs......

I guess now because of the proposed increase in property tax, the true value of property for sales will show as the owners will want to avoid huge payments. Instead of trying to dig out people eye with million dollar prices, homes will become more affordable. The Real Estate mafia must be madddddd!!!!!! |

I'm a youth in this country and i totally agree with the statement by the caller to the program, in which he states, that this government is being callous when it came to the budget. Food prices is already high and it seems as though everything else is going up to and there is nothing in plain site right now that will alleviate this situation anytime soon. I thank the present government for continuing the GATE but then again that and all can be stopped at anytime. You raised the cost of tickets for particular offenses and while that is all good to a point but don't you think that it's a bit much. In my point of view this budget wasn't really for the citizens of this country and if it was the finance minister needs to show us where. |

Property Tax is Definitely Going to Hurt The Population Badly

The proposed property tax is definitely going to hurt the population very badly.Already the many programmes and projects instituted by the government is over priced and most are not providing any tangible benefits.
Unfortunately the gov't believes in consumption without thinking about the bill tommrow. Its funny how the gov't can spend billions of dollars, no accountability and when all fails as with crime they talk ABC. If A don't work, spend another 2 billion on B, if plan B dont work spent another 3 billion on plan C. The problem is not the plan but the planners, managers, contractors, and politicians behind these failing projects and institutions.
Sounds like failure is okay as long as its the public purse, the gov't when it has to pay for these wastage well tax the public hardcore style.
Unfortunately the middle class will feel it the most, and may eventually evaporate into lower income bracket.
Any developed country has a very healthy middle income bracket, its only third world banana republics that have no middle class, only a small part of the population as extremely wealthy and the rest poor. These politicians stay in power by handouts to a poor population that is programmed to depend on the gov't for social handouts. Eventually the well dries up and we see social unrest. The politicians are good to shift the blame to unsuspecting gineau pigs, such as business groups, hard working prospering individuals, other rival opposition politicians etc.
Trinidad and Tobago with our gov't programmes is heading there. |

The revision of property taxes will help to regulate the housing market and standardize property evaluation. If our citizens do not like it they could emigrate to places like the US and pay Uncle Sam his high property taxes instead. My best advice is not to move to places like New York and California. |

To all those that live in USA or Canada, how much property taxes do you pay for your home??? Note, in south I pay less than a $500 property taxes. What I don't like is water rate i.e having to pay for water like if it is flowing 100% of the time. That should be pay for what u use.. |

Karen,
I agree the government should raise the property taxes but it is such an "unjustified" amount. Government has to collect revenue but this is "too much of a hike in layman terms". I guess the populace can exercise their right and not vote for the government.

The sad thing about this issue regarding the property tax increase is that the middle class, the driving force behind any economy, is being targeted and robbed of their financial security that they as well as members of all other classes have worked so hard to build. Imagine if you worked all your life, paid taxes through your teeth, still end up getting no first world social services, you are now threatened with losing your home if you cannot pay this astronomical tax? The affects young home owners to. This governments wants to take away your independence and look for a rental property after they force you out of your hard earned piece of T&T! |

Property Taxes in the USA are very high. It does depend on which State you live in but in New York I am paying US $12,000 equivalent to TT $72,000 per year. I also own a property in London and the taxes are much more reasonable at Sterling 1,200 per year or TT $12,000. However, you cannot compare the US with T&T. Property taxes in the US is used to fund the State budget, which is responsible for Schools, Emergency services etc. |
