Govt to offer assistance for funeral

Foreign Affairs Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon will be visiting former president Arthur NR Robinson this morning to offer assistance on behalf of the Government for the funeral arrangements for his wife, Patricia Robinson, who died yesterday.

In a telephone interview with the Express yesterday, Gopee-Scoon said protocol dictated that Prime Minister Patrick Manning and his wife, Education Minister Hazel Manning, visit the Robinsons before she did.

’I have arrangements to visit tomorrow morning ... I will meet with him formally to assist with funeral arrangements,’ Gopee-Scoon said.

A release from the Office of the Prime Minister stated that Manning yesterday appointed Gopee-Scoon to be in touch with the Robinsons on behalf of the Government ’in order to offer any assistance in any possible way’ to the grieving family.

’I had spoken to President Robinson and I also spoke to his daughter (on the phone yesterday). They need a bit of space,’ Gopee-Scoon said.

She said being the statesman that he is, Robinson was ’rather strong’ and was ’honoured to know’ that the Mannings had visited him.

Government To Assist Family for Funneral Posted: 2009-09-11 05:16:00 AM
Sir Ibeg you pardon, but these family are filty rich and the money to pay for there funeral. Why cant Government help the poor people who are suffering to get medical help. Is this what we call a caring Government. Give me a break. John ( Toronto)

What assistance? While the passing of Mrs Robinson is sad, this is a family that can well afford to take care of their own. Really! Sometimes its unbelievable what the government want to spend money on. Meanwhile, me and my family can't get an aspirin much less a bed at the hospitals.
Why pay for her funeral, she is a private citizen? Posted: 2009-09-11 1:19:00 PM
Not to disrespect mrs Robinson because she is obviously a great woman. But she did not serve the state any any executive or senior capacity so why is the government paying for her funeral? Former president's wife is not good enough a reason unless it was in the former president's package.
