Five killed in party

Dead: Hakim Vickles

Five people were shot dead during a birthday party in Curepe, yesterday, in the latest shock in this country’s staggering murder rate.

The deceased have been identified as Kerron Charles, Damien Punette, Hakim Vickles, Glen Morris and Ray James. Two others-Kelvin Parris and Girma Selassie-remain warded at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in critical condition.

Relatives of Charles, Punette,Vickles and Morris described their murders yesterday as unprovoked, insisting the men were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The multiple killings have now pushed the murder count for the year to 372.

The murderous attack, police report, started around 2.30 a.m. with two armed men entering the La Cabana Club, on Knowles Street and shot in James’s direction.

James, 23, of Jackson Street, Curepe, reportedly a former Youth Training Centre inmate, is said to have had an altercation with gang members from the area on Saturday night.

According to police, James was affiliated with several gangs and was known to have frequented the club and other pubs in the area.

He was shot several times about the body, including his head.

Police stated that several guests were attending the birthday party at the club of a woman-whom investigators refused to identify-when two men entered and shot at James. However, after he fell, they kept firing indiscriminately having made sure of their primary target by shooting him even as he lay dead on the ground.

Several patrons fled through the club’s exit, with some running through the nearby Knowles Street Recreation Ground which lies a few feet from the club.

In the melee, the murderers made their escape.

Following the shooting spree, Parris and Selassie were discovered bleeding in a corner of the club and rushed to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex where they remained warded in critical condition. Sources say Parris was shot in the left shin, while Selassie was shot in his back.

Morris, 27, lived at Bertie Trace, Arouca and was shot several times.

When the Express visited the Curepe area, relatives of Charles, also called ’KK’ and Boatman’, described him as being ’a hard working construction person.’

Relatives of Punette, who live a short distance from the club said they heard several gunshots.

Purnette, 25, a welder/mason, lived on Knowles Street and went to the club with several friends. A female relative described him as being ’cool, humble and very hard working and hardly ever limed.’

’He was the caretaker for the place (La Cabana Club). He came home and dropped off his girlfriend, then went to drop off the van at the club, but while there he saw his friends and started liming,’ the relative said.

Adding that relatives remain shocked over the incident, the female relative who was also at the club said when the shooting occurred the only thing she thought of was ’to just get out.’

Relatives of Fourth Form student Vickles were more vocal as they grieved over his death. Vickles, of Bellesmythe Street, Curepe and a student of the St Joseph Secondary School was shot behind the DJ booth at the club.

Vickles’ brother Kelsay Nico Hughes said: ’He was a good one. He just leave home to go and play music in the party and we got a call stating that he get shoot. I tried calling his cell phone three to four times and was not getting any answer.’

Stating his brother was known as the ’fix-it man’ around the neighbourhood, Hughes said: ’He always saying he wanted to be a technician. ’He was never disrespectful, he never hold no gun. He was the life of a party when he nearby everybody does be entertained.’

A female relative of Selassie described his condition as being critical. ’He is conscious but critical.’

Selassie,16, of NUGFW Drive, Valsayn, was not supposed to have been at the party, his relative said.

’He is just 16 years old and was not hearing to stay inside,’ the relative said.

A team of investigators led by ACP John Trevajo, Sen Supt John Edwards, Ag Supt David Nedd, Insp Ancil Corbette and officers of the Special Anti Crime Unit (SAUTT) and Homicide Bureau visited the scene. Investigations are continuing.

Once the PNM remain in power crime will not stop. Manning and his party only care about them selves. If manning cared he would do something.

This is very shameful! Posted: 2009-09-13 11:48:00 PM
It is very hurtfull to see the murder numbers for the year so far, this shows an average of more than one murder a day, while the government is just concerned about a silly no backings budget! Why do the citizens of T&T have to continuosly live in fear?! Mr PM, we need a solution soon and that is penalty for these murderers. EXECUTE them and they will stop killing!

The express will have hundreds of out rage for this gang killing. Some will say my sweet T&T has become a hell hole. Some will say, it has already become the muder capital of the world, and so the rage will go on and on.I hope some will say we need bipartisan legislation to bring back death penalty for muder. We need to hunt these criminals down and hang them.Get rid of the scum, it has become a plague. These manifestations are usually the cause of an inept government. It is apparent that the present government have no solution in place to bring down the crime rate. How sad to see their hands are tied.
I hope Police finds these criminals Posted: 2009-09-14 06:59:00 AM
Too much crime in T&T, I hope the police finds these horrible killers

National Insecurity Posted: 2009-09-14 07:30:00 AM
I used to think "let the criminals kill out themselves" but this is now spilling over into innocent blood. What more will it take for Martin Joseph (The Minister of National Insecurity) to admit massive failure and resign. The statistics have shown that murders have increased to almost twice what it was before he Minister. We need new ideas and a strong and respected (perhaps feared) leader to arrest this situation Mr. Joseph, please do the right thing for the country and for all of our children. - WW
WOW!!!! Posted: 2009-09-14 09:02:00 AM
how mnay more must die? under this manning leadership so many lives have been lost and manning is doing nothing to help the innocent people of this country,he is spending millions on more important things than human lives.we are worst of than the middle east and we are such a very small country.just think more than one person a day has already died in this country and the year has not even ended.please people we have to get manning out of his seat now or else it's will keep getting worse,it has not gotten better at all since manning took over...too many peopl dying in this country because of him.
Thank god I Migrated Posted: 2009-09-14 08:11:00 AM
I use to play cricket with Curepe Sports, and lime at this bar. Those were better times though, UNC was in power and this kind of thing was un-thinkable.
Massacre! Posted: 2009-09-14 08:21:00 AM
I think we now rival the most vicious NY/NJ mobs. How can these hitmen be so callous? Is life not worth anything in sweet T&T anymore.

What the hell is happening in this country? Where the hell are these people getting these guns from? Where the hell is the law . Mr Philbert please stop your damn talking and start earning your bloody paycheck as a crime fighter. This is a disgrace
five killed at party Posted: 2009-09-14 09:32:00 AM
I blame the innocent on the Minister of National Security, the Prime Minister and every minister in the government for their total disregard for the innocent in this country and the crime situation. The blood of all the murders past and present are on their hands...M
Too many Gun Crimes in T&T Posted: 2009-09-14 11:00:00 AM
Mr. Commissioner and Mr. Prime Minister and Mr. Minister of National Security.................the only task that is chartered to a Government as an expectation is to keep the citizens safe. We do not have that many murders in Florida per capita, so please note that I am going on a campaign to promote "no visits" to Trinidad and Tobago until this mayhem stops. Begin to put laws on the books like we did. For starters, have a gun.... 10 years, use it.... 20 years, kill someone.... life. You also need more patrols, mandatory police presence at large gatherings (like clubs, stadium functions etc). We can no longer tolerate this and it will get some press here in Florida very soon. You are being watched T&T, and if you want the THUGS to run things .........then so be it.
Spree killing Posted: 2009-09-14 11:27:00 AM
This is just ridiculous. What abou the innocent? These people are so lawless, Trinidad is rapidly becoming a ghetto.
5 Killed in Party Posted: 2009-09-14 10:09:00 AM
Is nothing sacred in this country anymore. Life has no value? We are seeing persons armed with gun roaming around and willing to take a life - in this case lives - without blinking an eyelash. Our authorities have neglected their duties for years and this is the result we see today. We are no better than the slaughter going on in the drug trade in Mexico. And to top it off, we see no help on the horizon. Only cheap talk and empty promises, and yes squandering and emptying of our resources, coming from those in charge. Where will it end? This is wholesale destruction - wiping our people off the face of this earth. Sympathies extended to those left behind to grieve.
When will it stop? Posted: 2009-09-14 11:34:00 AM
...and the killings go on, and our PM has nothing to say about it, except keep wasting taxpayers money by hiring more foreign "experts"
five killed in party Posted: 2009-09-14 10:27:00 AM
This was a gang killing according to the Express report.Where there are gangs, there are drugs.Where there are drugs there are suppliers. Why govt can't find the suppliers. All this is not adding up.People in high office might be involve, tying the hands of the police.Police might be heavily involve also.So what we have is a govt, whose heads are in the sand hoping the problem will go away.Instead, it is florishing and is presently out of control. Our govt,is helpless,May GOD help us.
Five killed Posted: 2009-09-14 10:31:00 AM
Since we always tend to compare T&T with USA, FBI statistics reveal crime is down 4% in the US. What say you Mr. Minister of National Security? Do the PNM colleges teach "Crime 101"? Worse can't get worst.
Reality Hurts. Posted: 2009-09-14 10:48:00 AM
This is the reality of what Trinidad & Tobago has become, and it really hurts me. 5 more young men dead at the hands of Murderers with illegal fire arms. While our Prime Minister and the Government stand by idle with no clue on how to deal with situation. This whole crime situation it our country must be stopped before we lose total control, and yes we need to rid the service of the dirty Police men too, this whole crisis will only get worse if we don't work together as a country. I hope the killers are brought to justice, and clubs need to have better security at the doors and search patrons before entering, also why were these under aged teens allowed into this club? What really going on?
Five killed at party Posted: 2009-09-14 11:33:00 AM
Let's see. It is now September, 2009. With 372 murdered thus far, it is likely, having regard to the flagrant disregard for human life, that by December 31, 2009, the murder rate will have approximated, if not surpassed, that of 2008 which earlier this year, our "esteemed" Minister of National Security who continues on the job, was confident would not happen.
Target practice Posted: 2009-09-14 12:55:00 AM
It seems to me that most killings now are only for target practice no motive needed
Five killed in party Posted: 2009-09-14 1:20:00 PM
Well, that is life, Trinidad style. No one would be caught, and even if they are caught, they will be let go for "Lack of Evidence". No one will he held accountable for these senseless murders. How can anyone have so much hate that they will continue to shoot a dead man while he lay dead on the ground. The fixation with higher property taxes and other foolishness with the budget seem to take precidence over crime in the country. May God grant the families of these men peace and comfort in their time of grief.
