THE toilet of a 76-year-old pensioner became a death scene yesterday when police shot and killed two men, who had been on the run.

The dead men were identified as Tyronne ’Spoon’ Browne, 29, and Hamza Friday.

But despite police reports that the men were armed and dangerous and one of them was wanted for a double murder in 2007, residents of Sawmill Avenue, Barataria, disputed the police version.

The incident took place at the corner of Garrick and Small Streets. Brown was said to be from St Barbs, Laventille, while no address was given for Friday. Residents, however, said they knew him from the area.

Owen Morgan, the owner of the house in which Brown and Friday were killed, did not even realise that the men had been killed in his toilet until the media arrived.

He escorted members of the media through his home to show the damage done. Broken locks and ransacked rooms were seen, but it was not until the doors to the toilet was opened that blood splattered and bullet riddled walls greeted him. The inside of the bowl was red with blood. ’Is in here they killed them? Look at this. My two grandchildren have to come home to this now?’ he asked.

Investigators said members of the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF), and the Special Anti-Crime Unit of Trinidad and Tobago (SAUTT), were on an exercise in Never Dirty, Morvant, and were on the lookout for Brown, who they said was wanted for the murder of Sean Sandy, 35, and his girlfriend, Avian Villafana, 24. Sandy and Villafana were shot to death on November 28, 2007, at Sandy’s Hamlet Trace, Laventille, home.

Police said during the exercise in, Brown and Friday were spotted and they engaged law officers in a shootout but managed to escape.

Officers using the blimp and police helicopters, hovered the sky for most of the night on Monday, in search of the men.

Yesterday morning they received information that the two men, who hid in the bushes at Never Dirty for the entire night, had hijacked a garbage truck and ordered the driver to be taken to Sawmill Avenue.

Officers said upon investigating that report they spotted the two armed men and chased them into a nearby house. Police said they had no choice but to open fire. They also claimed that a pistol and a revolver were recovered from the dead men.

Investigations into the killings are continuing.
