Couple killed, man held after Tobago fire

OUTRAGED: Orville London

One man is in police custody assisting investigators into the murder of husband and wife Bevan and Judith Toby of Runnemede, Tobago, who were burnt to death at their home shortly before noon yesterday.

Both were Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Police reports indicated that Bevan Toby was with church members carrying out house-to-house witnessing, when he was telephoned by his wife to come home.

That was the last time fellow church members of the Parlatuvier Kingdom Hall saw him.

Toby’s charred remains were found in the bedroom while her husband was found in the living room of their home.

Their family car was still parked outside their home, which had been ransacked.

The home was valued at $250,000.

A Tobago man was detained at the scene of the incident and is assisting police in their investigations.

District Medical Officer of Health Dr Mentor Melville ordered the couple’s bodies to be taken to the Scarborough Mortuary.

Meanwhile, the second teenager found at French Fort, Tobago, has been identified as 15-year-old Rondell Thomas of Signal Hill.

The bodies of 16-year-old Kolen Salandy and Thomas were found at French Fort on Saturday.

His mother, Ann Thomas, was outraged over the murder of her son, and is calling for the death penalty to resume in the country.

Rondell Thomas was a footballer with the St Clair Coaching School in Tobago and a Third Form pupil at the Signal Hill Secondary Comprehensive School.

’My son and him were friends, they get killed together. All I would like though is that they bring this to justice.’ Several people are assisting police in the murder of the teenagers.

An autopsy is to be performed.

THA Chief Secretary Orville London yesterday expressed outrage, condemning the murders of the teenagers.

London called the act barbaric, and said the Tobago House of Assembly was working towards ensuring that criminals were brought to justice.

Death Penalty Posted: 2009-09-20 10:56:00 PM
I am disappointed that with a murder rate of 382, fast approaching 400+ for 2009 for a country the size of 1.3 million, that calls for resumption of the death penalty fall on deaf ears and there isn't at least some national debate on the topic. We must all be reminded that it is on the statute books and regardless of the opinion of the Privy Council it continues to be the law of the land once their guidance has been met. Let the debate at least begin.

Well the madness is spreading in tobago too. Tobagonians do whatever it takes to prevent it please....M
You are responsible, Mr Londom Posted: 2009-09-21 03:52:00 AM
But Mr London are you expressing that outrage to the party responsible? The killing 'spree' we are now experiencing had its beginnings some seven years ago,and was 'nurtured' by a compliant and complacent government. You should know.

What's going on? This low life and pple hell bent on destroying our once beautiful Island should think twice be4 getting involved in such heinous crimes.Have they not realised that we are a small beautiful island which depends on Tourism for many of us to earn a living? Why on earth are there so much serious crimes going on here lately?Pple we have to look out for each other and assist the police if and when we can. Pretty soon there will be no visitors coming and god alone knows how many of us will put a roof over our head or even food on the table. We have to stand up now and be counted. The next time it could be you or someone very close. Help the police we're only a small island. Concerned Pple
murders of the Toby's and the teenagers in tobago Posted: 2009-09-21 02:01:00 AM
Tobago use to be a place, where paradise, once lost was found. This is an outrage of these kind of killings that can spur a society into vigilante justice.I hope that in the court system, these perpetuators of these crimes get the death pealty(bring it back)and suffer worse than their victims. chester birchwood
Tobago fire Posted: 2009-09-21 07:50:00 AM
The solemn peace and tranquillity is slowly losing its place in Tobago, imagine four murders in two days.
Lawlessness. Posted: 2009-09-21 07:27:00 AM
When i read this article earlier last week, I was thinking the second body had to be that of another 16 year old. Its quite disturbing, that the body was not identified immediately. Afterall, shouldnt the parent of a 16 year old, know the wearabouts of their child. This shows a lack of sound parenting. Also this seems to be another case of rape and murder. Its very sad that two small island such as ours have such a staggering crime rate. Im due to return home in some months from Italy; and everytime i read the newspaper, i get chills. What can we as citizens do to protect ourselves.
Tobago getting it too: Posted: 2009-09-21 08:26:00 AM
Now is time for the Government to Act. Now Tobago is being hit very hard by all the recent murders and unsolved crimes. my Question is, does the government Want A civil war or Vigilante Justice to take over? With all the increase in taxes and big summit that we hosting, yet the People within your Twin Island Republic Nation are being killed off on a daily basis by lawless thugs, and yes the Government is to blame, because we voted them in to protect and provide us with a better quality of life, which is what they all promised us if we voted for them. I know how it feels to lose a loved one to violence and crime, so to the families of those young men Murdered in Tobago, I say fear no evil, and only time will heal your wounds. (F.U.S)
How will the THA bring criminals to justice? Posted: 2009-09-21 09:36:00 AM
Last I checked the THA had no control over security, so how exactly are they working to bring the criminals to justice?
Tobago Posted: 2009-09-21 09:37:00 AM
This is ridiculous. I hope this is not another unsolved crimes added to the big list of unsolved crimes in Trinidad and Tobago
Complete Support for Law Enforcement Posted: 2009-09-21 12:24:00 AM
As a member of the business community of northeast Tobago, and a father, I would like to express and offer my complete support for all efforts among our Law Enforcement representatives to bring these barbaric criminals to justice. My sentiments go out to the family and friends of the victims, with only a reassurance that they are in a far better place than in Tobago.
What is happening in Tobago too? Posted: 2009-09-21 12:50:00 AM
I see "little Tobago" is soon becoming like Trinidad with the recent murders of 4 people within two days. I hope Mr. London does not become another "Martin Joseph" and just shooting platitudes out of his mouth to try and placate the people of this twin-island state.
