New tax to aid garbage collection

Government has increased property taxes to generate revenue for community services such as garbage collection, says Minister in the Ministry of Finance Mariano Browne.

’The purpose of the property tax is to provide a revenue source for the deployment of public goods such as garbage collection, street cleaning and road maintenance, street lighting, fire services, maintenance of recreational parks and other community services. These taxes will support the activities of Local Government bodies,’ Browne said at yesterday’s Senate sitting where he piloted the 2009/2010 national budget for debate.

Browne defended the hike in property taxes, saying the current system was antiquated and that Government was developing a Property Tax Information System to employ modern technology using a single platform to assess all properties and collect taxes via a harmonised tax regime under the management of a single assessment agency and a single collection agency to ensure consistency.

Opposition Senator Wade Mark was unforgiving, he said this move will further erode the pockets of the people and will usher in increases in rent, cost of living and even water bills.

’This property tax in the hands of an abusive Government could lead to segregation of communities and the development of ghettos. The divide between the rich and the poor would be consolidated and further concretised,’ he said.

’WASA bills are also based on an annual rateable value. As such customers could witness a ten-fold rise in their WASA bills when the new assessment and valuation exercise has been conducted by the Valuation Division. Would citizens be asked to finance WASA’s huge deficit of over $2.1 billion through the imposition of new water rates?’ questioned Mark.

Garbage Collection Posted: 2009-09-22 10:59:00 PM
So they stumbled upon a reason to validate the increase of property tax. really how is garbage collecion going to improve? What is needed is a new improved way of disposing the garbage. Why not say you're going to use the money to pilot a recycling system? why not Revamp the landfills? why not shut down illegal landfills? really are the citizens of sweet T&T going to sit still for this too?
Goods and Services Posted: 2009-09-23 02:55:00 AM
I always thought that garbage collection, electricity provision, and the like fell uner "services" and not "goods". Is this a recent change?
Punish us Posted: 2009-09-23 05:43:00 AM
Yes punish the citizens for building Brian Lara stadium, performing arts center, summit of the Americas,Tobago hospital,Commonwealth summit,The Prime Ministers house, bailing out private insurance companies, squander mania at Udecott,Propping up Petrotrin and i can go on and on. Shamelessly punishing the people for Governments reckless spending.
We are already paying ROAD TAX Posted: 2009-09-23 04:36:00 AM
There is no evidence to support that the road tax we are currently paying is used for road maintenance. Look at the state of he roads in this oil rich country. Who is going to manage these taxes who will report to us on the use of our money. Will it go towards Ministers Perks and Good living without doing any dam good for the ministeries they are placed in. We want more accountability.
Public Goods Posted: 2009-09-23 06:17:00 AM
"garbage collection, street cleaning and road maintenance, street lighting, fire services, maintenance of recreational parks and other community services" Do all communities in the country actually receive all of these public goods now?
Garbage Posted: 2009-09-23 05:24:00 AM
Browne is talking a lot of garbage. If the funds will go to the local government bodies then let those bodies collect the taxes. I think that once the funds go to the central government the local bodies will have a hard time getting anything, and will have to go through all kinds of red tape. The central government will use the funds as they please, for their make-work programmes and conspicuous spending.
PNM equals tax Posted: 2009-09-23 09:34:00 AM
Over a billion spent on a Stadium, millions spent on a Scarborough Hospital. The PNM years are here again. Garbage tax an example of their way of thinking. Waste money--- then come to poor tax payer, put their hands in his pocket and "thief" his money.
Are not paying none Posted: 2009-09-23 09:42:00 AM
Why do i have to pay for the mistakes this goverment makes.I did not vote for them and are not paying paying for their mistakes, let the people who voted for them pay alone pay that tax.
New Tax to aid Garbage Collection. Posted: 2009-09-23 12:52:00 AM
It is said that when North America Sneezes, Trinidad and Tobago catches, if not pneumonia, the common cold. This seems true and very relevant here. In Canada at this time, there is talk of a Harmonized Sales tax. Even the name of the new Revenue Agency, seems to follow from Canada. Can not T&T think for itself and come up with its own, unique system or way of doing things?
