Groups march against taxes

CIVIL MARCH: Members of several civil society groups march yesterday along Independence Square, Port of Spain, protesting the current state of the economy, including the introduction of a new property tax. -Photo: CURTIS CHASE

’No taxation before consultation.’ This was the chant of several civil society groups who gathered in the heart of Port of Spain yesterday evening, to protest the current state of the economy.

The group of close to 100 people comprised members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), the One Voice Committee, the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union and several other non-governmental organisations.

Under the watchful eye of a small contingent of police officers, the group marched along Frederick Street, around the Brian Lara Promenade, convening for a short while in front of the Twin Towers where the Ministry of Finance is housed, and then back up to Henry Street, where the march ended at the CWU headquarters.

Several well-known activists such as Fitun’s David Abdulah and new Chaguanas Chamber of Commerce president Stephen Cadiz, as well as artist and activist Rubadiri Victor were present at the march.

The activists spoke out against some of the proposals announced in the budget and the fact that very few citizens were consulted before the decision to increase property taxes was taken by the current administration.

There was a similar march by residents in Felicity yesterday led by Deputy Mayor of Chaguanas Borough Corporation, Orlando Nagessar.

This is what I am talking about. The people of T&T do not have to take everything the government push down their throats. They need to protest even more.
Shut down the country now! Posted: 2009-09-24 11:04:00 PM
Unless the government stops their spending spree and starts focusing on the real issues in Trinidad, we cannot accept any more taxes. This country should be shut down now until unless the government cannot demonstrate rational behavior. This is a sign of more to come - spending not stopping so raise taxes to pay for it.

It's what every man woman and child should be doing throughout the country as it's the only way Manning will ever listen or learn. We've to stand up for our rights. The gov't cannot be doing whatever suits them whenever they darn like, with no regards for the pple of Trinidad & Tobago. We're being disrespected, as if we do'nt matter and is not important. Let Manning know we are more important to him and his MP's than they are to us. Therefore we deserve a little more respect. Taxes Posted: 2009-09-25 00:50:00 AM
It's about time that the taxes are raised as there's homeowners who pay very little house rates as thier homes were built over 30 years ago and the value used for calculating rates are the same as when built, these homes are worth much more now and these persons are paying the same taxes as before.I know this because my mothers home in Plesantville paid higher rates than those in places like Valsyan etc.
you most protest against this incompetent govt Posted: 2009-09-24 8:52:00 PM

Property Tax Increases Posted: 2009-09-25 05:57:00 AM
While the increase may be a burden to most property owners, the fact remains that the valuations assigned to most properties in T&T are 'obsolete' and do not reflect the market value for such properties. Rather than increase the tax rates, the government should focus on property revaluations. One only has to look at the prices being asked for land. The going rate for a one lot of land in the Scarborough area is now $120,000 TT Revaluations would discourage the price gouging being leveled at persons who wish to purchase. Legislation should be passed to have such sellers pay property taxes retroactively at the proposed selling prices.
Shallow back pockets! Posted: 2009-09-25 04:37:00 AM
It is no wonder why we fear this fair tax. It hits us right in our back pockets.
Re: Shallow back pockets! Posted: 2009-09-25 2:01:00 PM
I agree with you on this---fear is the factor here. Most homes have grown/old children [my age, 57 yrs]with their own children living for free and these grown useless children, in most cases heirs to the homes after parents died, had no property probate transfers. These useless property owners don't even clean the large yards or maintain these homes' 50-year old fences that their parents had created for them to play safely. The government should enter every village and identify homes for taxes and not focus only on the HDC communities of homes. My C/Bay community is one with large [3,000 sq ft.] concrete homes on a Gulf of Paria settled hillside [workers--Petrotrin, Pt. Lisas, TCL, teachers and government employees, parlor owners, etc.,] and I could bet you these people do not pay property taxes--only utility taxes, i.e., water rates, telephone, electricity, etc. Identify them and charge them the tax, maybe they will cherish their homes and environment---instead of drinking liquor galore, hit them in the back pocket purse! Well done people, but you will need more than marching to stop greedy taking your hard earned money.

I totally support this March, How the Present Government could do this to the Citizens of this Country? What about pensioners and individuals with a very low income bracket? If they cannot pay, their property would now be State owned. If the Government is in Deficit, why distress the people who have worked so hard and Sacrificed a number of years to have a Home of their own in convenience and comfort? This Present Government is not thinking right and what the Opposition is doing?

You people in Trinidad do not have to march on the streets, you have to march to the polling stations, and do the right thing on election day. Every nation does vote for change, except Trinidadians, because they simply like it so - Trini, USA

If the ministers says she not budging, we the citizenry need to be more forceful in getting the attention of the Minister. Your walks to highlight your dissatisfaction is not getting the required attention and this is needed. We are under pressure and she has to know this forcibly.
Group march Posted: 2009-09-25 1:03:00 PM
I agree with the march. Thousands of homeowners should march also because the taxes are too high and more than that they will be imposed at one time, and not in phases. There are people who cannot afford to pay these taxes. What will they do? This is wickedness on the part of the government. Dr. Eric Williams was a Saint, May God continue to bless him in His kingdom. God Bless Eric Williams. He would have never done this to his people. ac,md
