Farmers warn Govt against property tax

HOW IT'S DONE: Sean Primo (right), of Kent Farms Limited, gives an overview of an aquaponic system to participants at yesterday's Farmers' Forum at the Farmers' Market in Macoya. President of the Agricultural Society of Trinidad and Tobago, Dhano Sookoo, says farmers finally feel like the Government is getting its priorities right.

She said the renewed focus that has been placed on the agricultural sector and the nation’s food security has come at a necessary time, since shortages of food had become a major issue all over the world.

However, Sookoo, like many other leaders in various sectors of the society, is calling on the Government to think carefully about the proposed property tax adjustments announced in the national budget, which was read on September 7.

Sookoo was addressing hundreds of local farmers at the National Agricultural Forum 2009 yesterday. The event was held at the Macoya Wholesale Farmers’ Market in Macoya, Tunapuna. Various farming issues, advents, achievements and the next step which local farmers will take to become more commercially viable were all up for discussion.

While Sookoo said the citizenry is still feeling the burdens of decades of agricultural neglect by policy makers, she said ’farmers are no longer the forgotten part of society’.

She maintained, however, that with the high level of development needed for this country’s agricultural sector to get up to scratch, it would not be economically sound for the Government to dole out significant property tax increases on agricultural lands.

’We must pay cognizance to the fact that the agricultural sector is not developed and cannot be burdened with further taxation,’ Sookoo said.

Sookoo said she and her committee at the Agricultural Society were now focused on ensuring the promises made for agriculture in the 2009/2010 Budget are fulfilled.

She warned that the time for talk in relation to agricultural development in this country was over, and that farmers were beginning to recognise the tremendous power they held in their hands and how important their contribution is to national development and sustainability.

The president said it was now time for both policy makers and local farmers to grab ’the bull by the horns’ and help ’reposition Trinidad and Tobago as the food basket of the Caribbean’.

She also renewed the call for the development of a National Agricultural Council.

Farmers from all over the country, including Valencia, Cedros, Plum Mitan, Balata, Maracas, Paramin and Malgretoute, all gathered to share their concerns at yesterday’s event.

Farmers and the tax Posted: 2009-09-27 10:54:00 PM
Usually in countries where there is propety tax, farmes are accorded special considerations and both the valuation of farm land and the taxes imposed on farm land and form vehicles are set at a low rate to encourage farming and to ensure the continuation of farms and farming. Even income tax on farmers are granted special rates and considerations. Let us hope that this is recognized and encouraged.

If the people do not stand up against Manning now, he will finish with our country.
It is our civic duty to pay taxes... But Posted: 2009-09-28 04:59:00 AM
Let us not miss the boat here. A system that touts itself to be capitalist can only function through taxation; they go together like a hand fits a glove. Capitalism/Taxation. One cannot function without the other. That being said, the real issue here is not paying taxes, it's the quantum leap from $300 to $3,000. I am sure if the tax had been triple to $900 or around that figure there would not have been such a large outcry. When the citizens start venting their frustrations and opinions, basically “We” are saying that it was too much, under our constitution we are 100% correct in doing so. We have a "Financial Maverick" that we voted for and put he into the job she is doing to take care of us, and now she is saying basically, "Hey people I am master of all I survey, just suck it up and fork out the money because ”I” said so. She forgot one thing, there is no “I” in Democracy, only in Socialism, Communism, and Dictatorial leadership. “For the people by the people” is the way we supposed to go, and as far as I know, “By” the people means that we have a chance to vote on things of that nature, unless I am missing something here. I am waiting patiently to be called a wagang, and of course I know my dissent will be labeled wagang behavior. I just pray that in the end common sense will kick in and someone in that room sitting around that table of “Leadership, knowledge, Wisdom, and Understanding will shake their head horizontally instead of vertical and say, “Wait a minute, maybe all these people that are complaining might have a legit gripe, can we make some adjustments to our initial actions? As of now, with the amount of unsolved murders in this country, it tells me that no one is speaking for or representing the dead. Are we going to treat our living the same? Lloyd C. You live in your high walls with your maids and servants and neglect your people and think that your are doing the will of God and in your chest beats not a heart, just a ball full of pride and selfishness. You have wonderful day Mr. Manning crime will never stop it's because you don't care about them you only care about status ask yourself what would jesus do....
