Mark 'embarrassed' by Manning's UN address

empty chairs: Wade Mark

Opposition Senator Wade Mark said he was embarrassed when he saw Prime Minister Patrick Manning speaking to empty chairs at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Saturday.

’I looked at television and there was the honourable Prime Minister of my country, my Prime Minister, because he is our Prime Minister, addressing to UN General Assembly, and as the television camera swept (the conference centre) Mr President, 90 per cent of the chairs were empty.’

’I wanted to know if they were boycotting our Prime Minister. I was embarrassed...I am a Trinidadian to the bone...I couldn’t understand. Are people getting the message out there that we have a Mugabe-type leader and we have begun to boycott the Prime Minister? How my Prime Minister could be addressing the General Assembly and nobody listening to him except a few people? Why? When (US President Barack) Obama was there the whole place was filled. When Hugo Chavez, the President of Venezuela, spoke the whole place was filled. I am very concerned.’

Mark called on Minister in the Ministry of Finance Mariano Browne to investigate ’why our Prime Minister did not get a proper audience,’ a statement which provoked chuckles from all benches.

But Mark said it was Manning’s statement at the Assembly that took the cake.

’When a Prime Minister could go an international conference and tell the world that the reason why we have crime in Trinidad and Tobago and in the Caribbean is because of the loss of preferential treatment and access for bananas and sugar...I say, Mr President, we have reached. This is the greatest.’

Mark added: ’I think maybe we need some more alcohol at the Prime Minister’s residence. We need to provide the Prime Minister’s residence with more alcohol and cigarettes,’ he said.

Mark was speaking during the debate on the Provisional Collection of Taxes Order, which among other things, provide for the increased taxes on alcohol and tobacco, announced in the 2009/2010 budget.

Mark said these were ’harassment taxes’. He said he would not be surprised if Government introduced dog taxes or taxes on bicycles, because after squandering the money it was ’scrapping the barrel’ as the Diego Martin West MP Dr Keith Rowley had said.

’I remember a former High Commissioner of Canada, rum till he dead, and the police in Canada almost jailed him but he was saved because he was a diplomat. He believe in rum. You couldn’t get him to have a healthy lifestyle...He was exercising choice, but in a mad way. He could have killed people in Canada.’

Gov ernment Senator George Hadeed murmured sotto voce something about the UNC and Mark told him not to worry about the UNC frontbench.

Wade Mark is a Genius! Posted: 2009-09-28 6:48:00 PM
I love him for his ombudsman like tenacity. Good work honorable minister.
Mr. Manning Greedy After Gain Posted: 2009-09-28 7:35:00 PM
"When a Prime Minister could go an international conference and tell the world that the reason why we have crime in Trinidad and Tobago and in the Caribbean is because of the loss of preferential treatment and access for bananas and sugar." Once again Mr. Manning proved to the country that he's only after his gain and not for the welfare of the country. This statement makes no sense.
"Embarrassed" by Manning's UN Address Posted: 2009-09-28 9:19:00 PM
When I read this statement made by the Prime Minister of my country at the UN with an international audience listening and watching, I was floored. I could not believe that my P.M. could sink so low to attempt to try and pull the wool over the eyes of the world. Yes, he has been doing this in my country for so long that he has become accoustomed to saying what ever he pleases, factual or not. But this time, he went too far. The world would look at him and become speechless, as there are no decent public words available to support this lame duck excuse. He shamed us in the eyes of the world. We have the world media, international television outlets such as B.B.C. and C.N.N., the internet, all easily accessible, and nothing is a secret anymore. Simply type in Trinidad and Tobago, and press ENTER and its all there. Mr. Manning has reached the pinnacle of power!

I am 'embarrassed' as a Trinidadian to have Wade Mark representing us in Parliament. He doesn't realize that these are debate sessions. Not everyone will be present as it takes place over a number of hours over a period of days. He should think before he speaks. He continues to show that his stupidity knows no bounds. Wade Mark, get some intelligence please; buy it if you have to. If you have nothing "logical" to say - (I can't say "good" because you NEVER have anything "good" to say) - say nothing at all. Spare us the ramblings of a fool.
Mark 'embarrassed' by Manning's UN address Posted: 2009-09-29 06:33:00 AM
Don't make this into an issue. I work at the UN and only few speakers get the full attention of everyone. This does not only happen to Trinidad speakers but other speakers from all over the world. It has nothing to do with his speech. Please talk about something else and stop looking for nonexistant issues to make something of.

Concerned TO THE HIGHEST DEGREE IF Mr Manning mentioned that the spate of violence, crime had to do with preferential treatment and the banana trade issue. I am subject to correction.
UN Address Posted: 2009-09-29 08:36:00 AM
To educate Mr. Mark about the settings within the United Nations after the High Plenary meetings on the first and second day of the General Assembly most of the leaders return to their respective countries causing the assembly to be vacant. Also when the representatives for a country are about to speak the supporters would then assemble and support their leader. The Honorable Prime Minister did an excellent job this past Saturday and being here to witness it is much different from what is broadcasted......
Be Real Trinis Posted: 2009-09-29 08:38:00 AM
Who wants to disrupt their Sat morning sleep-in to listen to a PM from an island of 1.5 million people with no influence on anything? Lets be real and stop playing island politics Mark.
Not embarrasing.. Clueless Posted: 2009-09-29 10:02:00 AM
The crime epidemic has more to do with what is known as the civil black hole syndrome. It starts with the youths falling out of the education system and nothing in place to catch them and put them back on track. If you are not academically inclined, then it should be “Mandatory” you are taught skills in schools that emphasize more using your hands instead of your head, just like they do in Germany. With the modernization and increase in technology, and from an educational point of view they did not fit in or evolved with the times and so in the end they take the short cut to aspire the same goals, became motivated by the same quality of life shared by the educated and affluent. They turn to Hoodlumism to keep up with the Joneses “By any means possible”. The other aspect of our system that failed is the Justice system. Crime and punishment, length of time for pending maters and legal procedures. Percentage of violent crimes unsolved. Police service, I won’t even go into detail because everyone knows, even the deaf, dumb, blind, and crippled. One of the most striking things that really scare me is that we are so naive that we do not understand that the most important fuel that is burning the fire of crime in this country is illegal weapons and ammunition. Just recently someone travelling from the Northern Hemisphere was stopped because one bullet was found in his luggage. That tells me folks that our Airports are pretty much secured. The fuel is coming from our porous sea borders, and to date nothing, and I mean nothing seriously has been implemented to put a halt to it. Recently two multi million dollars boats were launched in response to an accident. The report stated they were on the scene in fifteen minutes, while at the same time we had four stranded fishermen who were kidnapped by pirate’s operating in our waters. They stole their equipment, and could have taken their lives if they felt like doing so . The Coast Guard is clue less, they “Allow” almost 100% of all illegal weapons and ammunition and I will say 99.9% of illegal drugs into the Country. Two days ago the biggest drug bust in history by the British on high seas took place somewhere close to us, while our ships were anchored away at Staubles bay and our crew men probably sitting down on a bunk playing wapee. When we start connecting the dots we will see that they are all interrelated. Put them together and they spell High Crime, not Sugar and Banana. Lloyd C. Johnson US Army Retired, Germany
Mark "embarrased" by manning UN address Posted: 2009-09-29 10:11:00 AM
I think Opposition Senator Wade Mark should have more sense to understand for the most part of most at UN conferences everyone wants to listen to the leaders of the super power of the world and once they are finishing addressing the UN Council it becomes a free for all with the rest of delagates. For instance everyone wanted to hear Gadaffi and once he was done with his approximaately 80 minutes speech the room basically becane empty. Most of the representatives in attendance listen to one or two foreign leader talk and then they walk about New York City doing their own thing...Senator Wade please go back to the camera and look at the room when the Iranian leader, Mugabe and other non-super power leaders were speaking and you would find the room was basically empty and as a Trinidadian who was front and center i applauded the fact that our leader was able to speak to a group of folks as oppose to some who were speaking before an empty room.

I hope to GOD that the world leaders stat treating Mad Man Manning as the plague and, stay far away from him. Its about time England and USA demonostrate their distaste for the advantage this man is doing to the citizens of Trinidad and letting the country decay into crime. Not a soul gets caught for ANY murder committed. USA
Empty Chairs Posted: 2009-09-29 10:40:00 AM
The empty chair syndrome at the US has nothing to do with Patrick Manning. We just have to realize that no one wants to hear what small states have to say. It happens not only to Caribbean Heads of Government... but ALL nations that are not considered "G20"...
MARK EMBARASSED Posted: 2009-09-29 09:33:00 AM
A few years ago Manning addressed students at Medgar Evers College in B'klyn. I was a student there at the time. And the man just went off on a tirade, no one knew what the hell he was talking about. This is truely embarassing. That statement beats the cake, (so to speak). Wow!!! KIya.
No audience or very little audience for Manning, want to know why? Posted: 2009-09-29 07:18:00 AM
Hello Mark, I am sorry to say this, an investigation into why there was not an audience or very little for Manning would be waste of time. No audience or little audience tells you how a leader is look at, how he comes across or how he is respected in the world. Many people have already met Manning, and if he does not comes across as a dynamic leader, no body will pay much attention to him. Besides, a lot of world leaders may have already heard Manning speaking and met him, and felt it was not worth attening the UN to hear his speech. Why press the point, many people in the world are just not interested in Manning. Anyway, what Manning was perhaps about to talk about may have been just boring. Hello, Mark get rid of Manning and put some one as leader of your country who will be more liked and who gets an audience.
No Audience Posted: 2009-09-29 10:31:00 AM
Ha ha, this is hilarious No one wants to listen to a PM that has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for the country that elected him. Oh, wait! Forgive me, I was wrong- he did do something for our country- crime & kidnapping, along with road fatalities are all now at the highest rate in years. Because ONE panel van crashed on the creek killing 5 people, you want to ban all panel vans now- so because of one drunken old man's mistake and lack of concern for other human lives, everyone else trying to earn an honest living is getting penalized for it Take that as a hint "Prime Minister" and resign or something.
Mark embarrassed by Manning Posted: 2009-09-29 11:40:00 AM
Declines in bananna and sugar production are resoponsible for the high rate of crime in TnT. He doesn't just sound like a leader of a third world country, but a leader of a very poor country. I agree with Mark..total embarassment. Aslo. this is one big fat lie... crime rate was already high before these declines, and when the country was prospering. Yeah he does sound lide a leader of a bananna republic. Disappointed and embarrased Trini from Toronto.
A Deliberative Institution. Posted: 2009-09-29 1:08:00 PM
Senator Mark, look in the mirror and on reflection, determine which master are you serving, politics is not akin to patriotism. Juices.
Most people are totally embarrassed by this PM. Posted: 2009-09-29 1:18:00 PM
What can I say, Manning reminds me of a come see never see. Talking to empty seats just to show off. what a failure.
PM talks to empty seats at UN General Assembly Posted: 2009-09-29 1:29:00 PM
I hope that this brings home the message to the PM of T&T that he is truly insignificant in the world-scheme of things. I wonder if he will hear ths message over the loud noises of his boisterous ego? Mr PM, your focus needs to be on serving (not using)the people of Trinidad and Tobago; not just the born-again Christians (and the folks in Pt Fortin,La Brea and Lavantille.) You were placed where you were for the specific purpose of serving ALL the people of T&T; not to build 'diplomatic centres' in an attempt to impress anyone and everyone foreign and not to build 'skyscraping' stadia for a chidren who are intellectually regressing. You were put there to serve your country and for 7 years now, you've consistently been a failure!
YOU ARE NOT ALONE, MARK Posted: 2009-09-29 09:53:00 AM
Sorry to inform you Mark, but you and the whole country could be feeling the same way. What an embarassment,is putting it mildly.I am embarassed for the P.M,he actually thought he spoke sense,to this learned audience. He believes that people do not do their research and home-work,so he can spit out anything from his mouth and they would swallow it.He cannot help it,but the more he travels, the more people would realize how deceitful he is.People with common-sense would not hold it against the country, they know better. Aubert Modeste
PM Alone Posted: 2009-09-29 2:30:00 PM
Well what can I say? When you are a small player on the international scene the world do not stop to hear what you have to say. At least he had a small audience... it could be worse. If he had something of substance then an audience would have been there. -Watching from the U.S.
