Enill apologises for property tax $$ error

Energy Minister Conrad Enill yesterday apologised for an error he made when he said last Friday that the anticipated revenue from property taxes was $72 million. Enill also stated then that the tax was more of a revenue-reducing measure than a revenue-raising measure.

Independent Senator Basharat Ali raised the issue yesterday, pointing out that Enill’s figures conflicted with those given by Finance Minister Karen Nunez-Tesheira.

Speaking after Ali, Enill said that upon checking the Review of the Economy the $72 million he referred to related to the fiscal year 2009. He said the revenue expected from property tax for 2010 was $325 million.

’What I would like to put on the record is that there is no one billion dollar (revenue) activity taking place... It is $325 million. So I wish to sincerely apologise to this House for that error. It was done with no bad intention. It was simply an error in the Review that I have looked at and (Senator Ali) having brought it to my attention I wish to correct it,’ he said.

Laughable; Tax Reduction Posted: 2009-09-28 7:00:00 PM
I posted a message earlier, when this ludicrous statement by the Minister on this topic appeared last week and said it was laughable what this Minister asserted. It's an insult to the intelligence of the people to try to hood wink them into believing that Government would bring in tax measures that would result in a budget shortfall of millions of dollars. They would have to find ways to recover the lost revenues by imposing/ introducing other hidden taxes or sin taxes like they call them in North America such as increases on the well worn alcohol and tobacco taxes. Property taxes like any other tax is uni-directional and would incrementally increase as the Government appetite for spending increase. It's a cash cow for this Government and future administrations. So good luck trinis, the fun has only begun.
