Defends alcohol and tobacco hikes

Mr. Browne, I don't think you will find many people out there who would disagree with your statement that the use of cigarettes and abuse of alcohol cause serious health problems, which in turn creates a burden on our health care. But please do not fool yourself or attempt to convince us that raising taxes on these two vices will cut down on its use. Those who are ADDICTED to these vices will find the money, one way or another to satisfy their needs. They will go without basic needs, for themselves and their families, medicine and health care; steal, beg, borrow, and prostitute themselves to get the money to feed their vice. You will create a further problem fof our people, as children will be cheated - less basic essentials, etc. So you see Mr. Browne, we in T&T have 'grown-up' and know the realities, and the untruths you are dishing out to us.
The extra money you will be collecting from these taxes, would you be directing ALL of this money into programmes for rehab., counselling, etc. to help these addicts recover, and job training to equipt them to go out and get gainful employment to keep them occupied and have confidence in themselves. You see Sir, when you take away one vice, you must replace it with something substantive to help our people move from 'abuse' to 'freedom to live'. I think, sir, that you have a lot of growing up to do, as you are still 'living in the land of make believe'. |

Your point is well taken by the right thinking people but this government will do anything to put the pressure on the poor people and put a spin on it. Why don't the minister really say the truth and that is they looking for money. |
Increasing The Cost For Alcohol and Tobacco

If the Government increases the cost for alcohol and tobacco, were will the extra money they receive goes? It's a good idea to increase the cost, but it's even a better idea to invest the money they receive into something worthwhile or praise worthy. Like a drug rehabilitation center or a youth community center, etc.... Keep up the good work. |

What a load of baloney! Engage your brain before commenting.Have you not read any of the articles about Ganga and what it does to the brains? It has been proven it's a psychotic drug. In our institutions here in England there are many young black / white men but mostly black, whose lives have been screwed up due to Ganga.I've seen it first hand,so stop this nonesense talk about legalising it. |
What about the food prices?

I guess the food must be bad for our health also! Seeing the rampant rise in the prices. There is a major problem with alcolholism in the country, but one must wonder whats worse, a drunkard, or numerous gangs of murderers, rapist, kidnappers, drug traffiking? The youths are also getting involved more in smoking and alcohol abuse, but, shouldn't we educate them about it, rather than hiking prices to make a further profit from them. Have a nice day T&T. |

Food price increase will be coming very soon and they will then tell you to eat local green fig and ground provision to save money but I do not know what they will do when people not buying anything to pay tax. |
Aiyo, ayio, coming down with a bunch of taxes!

Aiyo, Mr Browne for coming up with that brilliant answer that increasing the tax on tobacco and liquor will prevent taxpayers from getting sick and thus our health-care facilities can administer fewer numbers of the truly sick with greater compassion and care. It is virtually killing (oops wrong word but you get the drift) two birds with one stone. |

I think this man has to stop talking and think of what he's going to say before he says it. It is a personal choice if someone wants to drink or smoke. This is man is too silly. |

All these facts that Mr.Browne has yet nothing to curb crime. No one can prove 100% that you will get cancer from smoking, because if it really so bad then ban it like Ganja and Coke. Many non smokers get cancer, women get breast cancer and in the USA they have said that plastic water bottles can help cause breast cancer in women yet without solid proof they will not ban plastic bottles, so Mr.Minister Browne shut up please and help solve crime. Always an excuse to rise prices and make poor people pay and suffer, why not increase taxes on the Rich? They have more than enough. |

I actually agree with increasing taxes on cigarettes and alcohol. I would much prefer this to the property tax. You can choose whether or not to consume these items, but don't come with the excuse it is for healthier living and to say you can spend less on health care is a disgrace. It is just a way to get easy money for them to squander yet again. |
Well Said Mr Minister: Next Step - Ban Smoking in EVERY Public Place

Well said Mr. Minister. I am happy to know that intervention in the form of a deterrent for the young is being enforced by the Government. I have seen the derelict condition of some of my high school counterparts who were binge drinking at school and smoking outside of school as teenagers. A couple of them are now on harder drugs and are unable to take good care of themselves, much less their young children. As a YOUNG PERSON myself I am sick and tired of people thinking that everybody should continue to pay for their bad habits. We've seen so many young people dying in drunken driving related accidents. For once WOULD ADULTS CEASE BEING SELFISH AND CEASE PLAYING POLITICS WITH THE FUTURE AND WELLBEING OF OUR COUNTRY!!!
Another thing I dislike is that smokers choose to come in the midst of people, who are waiting at the taxi stand or bust stop for transportation, etc., to smoke. They put me at a greater risk of developing cancer and other chronic illnesses, when I made a decision not to smoke. SELFISH, SELFISH, SELFISH. Please stay at home and smoke....I frankly don't care. Smoking and the drinking of alcohol are vices NOT necessities.
Next step Mr. Minister...BAN smoking in EVERY PUBLIC PLACE,including the streets.

More serious measures need to be taken if you want to be successful in reducing health costs of addictive diseases like alcoholism and nicotine addiction. Seasoned addicts will continue their habits regardless of what the cost is, to their detriment. Promote more health advice. |

I hope Mr Brown is aware of the fact thats these tax measures implementd in other countries did not lead to decreases in consumption but did in fact lead to a very thriving black market and lots of crime. So please becarefull what you wish for Mr Brown |

Since when are youths responsive to prices? Obviously, if one looks at other situations eg Cinema prices and Clubbing entry, we see its not the youths who pay. Anyone with children will tell you that they absorb any unexpected or arbitrary prices their kids meet. Research better next time. You can do it. Don't make the rest of TnT ashamed by your malconstrued deductions.

If finance Minister Browne are really serious about helping to save lives, then he should start by asking his colleague Jerry Narace, why so many people die (not from alcohol and tobacco, mind you) in our hospitals, due to the PNM government's lack of proper funding and resources in our public health care system today. |

We are not stupid Brown, we all know you all trying to get money. What other excuse you Karen and Manning will give the people next year when you fall short again and you have to raise more taxes? I would be looking out to see what other excuse you all would come up with. |
