'SMILING' COP SHOT
Helicopter hunt for escaped bandits

SHATTERED: A Crime Scene Unit officer examines a smashed window pane of the Complete Care Pharmacy in Curepe yesterday. The pharmacy was robbed during which a police constable, Dave "Smiley" James, was shot. -Photo: STEPHEN DOOBAY

A VERY WELL liked Police Constable, known by most as ’Smiley’, was shot yesterday afternoon when he tried to prevent a robbery at a Curepe pharmacy.

PC Dave James who was shot in the abdomen and hand remained in satisfactory condition at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex last night.

Police said around 1.30 p.m., a bandit walked into the Complete Care Pharmacy located near the corner of Riverside Road and the Eastern Main Road, Curepe, and announced a hold-up.

PC James, who at the time was on mobile patrol on his bike, saw the robbery.

He walked across to the pharmacy, grabbed the bandit, disarmed him and hit him with a gun butt.

He had him under control but unknown to PC James, two of the bandit’s accomplices were outside. They too were armed.

Both of them walked in the pharmacy and fired several shots at James following which all the bandits escaped by running north along Riverside Road.

PC James was lying helplessly on the floor of the pharmacy for just a few seconds until the employees recovered from their shock and assisted him.

Several of Curepe Junction’s regular limers also ran from where they were and attended to James.

Within minutes an ambulance arrived and with several hands available to help him into the ambulance, James was en-route to the hospital mere minutes after the ambulance arrived.

When the Express arrived on the scene, Crime Scene Unit officers were at the now ’closed for the day’ pharmacy dusting for fingerprints.

By this time, police had already embarked on a manhunt for the three bandits. Up to last night they remained at large. The search had continued well into the evening with the use of one of the Special Anti Crime Unit’s helicopters.

’I sorry for them men when they find them,’ said one elderly woman on the scene.

’Everybody in the valley (Maracas Valley) like this man,’ she said. ’I really hope he come out of it...Oh Lord I want to cry now.’

St Joseph Police are continuing investigations.

That is how police should respond to everything. Sorry an officer had to get shot. but this is speed and efficiency, things looking up
Re: That is the way Posted: 2009-09-29 08:24:00 AM
This is ONLY because it's a police officer
Cop SHOT Posted: 2009-09-29 00:21:00 AM
Understand me folks,no law enforcement can stop them,no fear what so ever of any law or new procedure from Canada. Look the criminals are enjoying crime in Trinidad right now, easy bail,5 years before a case goes to courts,no hanging penalty and last when they die by the bullet he was a good boy,the police bad. Trini's USA concerned.
There was a shootout, and the 3 bandits are dead. Posted: 2009-09-28 8:50:00 PM
What I want to hear by the end of this week is that the 3 bandits were found. They fired at the police first, and a shootout occurred during which the 3 bandits were wounded fatally. End of story. Oh, and that officer James will make a full recovery. Thank you officer James for risking your life to protect citizens.
"smiling" cop shot Posted: 2009-09-29 03:53:00 AM
Just when PC James thought he had the situation under control here comes two other bandits who eventaully shot PC James in the abdomen. I have noticed from reading different ariticles that these bandits are not working alone they are moving in three's and four's. I hope that all officer's on duty will always be awhere of this. I do hope they are caught and put where they belong and i pray that PC James will have a full recovery...M
To protect and serve. Posted: 2009-09-29 04:23:00 AM
Ladies and Gentlemen, Kudos to Officer "Smiley" for trying to stop the robbery. Why didn't he have any back-up, were there no other officers in the area, did he call for back up, did the people in the store try to help him???? This crime war we are fighting will never be won if we don't do this together! Nobody wants to get involved, yet we want peace and security. Nonsense, we all had to put our lives on the line to build this Country, we cannot let a few thugs with guns take it away!!!! God help us!!!!
Re: 'SMILING' COP SHOT Posted: 2009-09-29 04:31:00 AM
'Smiley' you should not be smiling with the crime situation as it is!!! This shows how serious you take your job. Anyway, FYI: How do you disarm an armed bandit? You shoot him before he shoots you!!!! [JMD]

Your middle name must be "silly". What a silly response?

Brave Officer Posted: 2009-09-29 04:34:00 AM

PROTOCOL Posted: 2009-09-29 04:43:00 AM
I applaud the officer and wish for him a speedy recovery. However, there needs to be established protocol when dealing with a situation. Did the officer have a radio and if so did he call for assistance. It could have been much worse with employees of the pharmacy as well being shot or even killed. Police officers need to protect themselves too. My prayers are with him.
Make body armour mandatory Posted: 2009-09-29 04:47:00 AM
Good work by the cops however maybe this situation highlights some defficiencies in the police service that need to be looked at, 1. bullet proof vest mandatory for all officers on patrol. 2. better scenario training for officers likely to encounter these types of situations.
Sad to hear...he should have been wearing a vest Posted: 2009-09-29 02:25:00 AM
It should be Standing Operational Procedures that all Police while on duty should wear either an external or internal flak jacket (Bullet Proof vest). It definitely might have made a difference. Accolades to the private citizens that rendered help. I know sometimes the Police antics frustrate us, but there are “Plenty” of good ones as to those that choose the wrong path. We have a moral obligation and a civic duty to support them nevertheless. Hopefully a good leadership chain of command will be eventually established and their entire establishment will rise to the occasion to a path of true professionalism somewhere down the road. Unlike the nice lady, I have no sympathy for thieves. I can tell them in multiple languages... Work, Trabaja, Arbeite. I never heard of anyone dying from doing an honest day’s work. If you do not understand one of those words and you insist that hard working people owe you something, and are also working to support your life style and habits; you are killing women and children also in your futile attempt and hasty pursuit for your ill-gotten gains. Why should I have sympathy for you when you meet your match? Feeling sorry for you is like a chicken voting for Colonel Saunders of Kentucky fried chicken. When the “Po Po” finally catches up with you I am looking forward to reading something like, “When the dust settled, and the pistol smoke cleared the bad man was found with his face down and his behind sticking up in the air.” End of story, Good Day!! CCTV Posted: 2009-09-29 05:29:00 AM
Shop owners operating in FMRGs (fast moving retail goods), take away foods and other high traffic sales should invest in CCTV for the mutual saftey of all on their premises.
Good Cop. Posted: 2009-09-29 06:14:00 AM
I Hope Officer James recovers fully, he is one of the best police men I have ever met very friendly and loved by everyone who knows him in the village. If half of the police service was as polite and interact with the public like this man then crime would go down. I hope that anyone who saw these bandits or know them, turn them in to the law, if not and they get kill in shoot out well, that is life, live by the sword so die by it.
who u think??? Posted: 2009-09-29 06:26:00 AM
PNM is the cause blame them!!!!!!!!!!!
commendations... Posted: 2009-09-29 06:38:00 AM
This is what EVERY police officer should be willing to do. PROTECT and Serve, not PILLAGE and STEAL. Well done sir smiley...
HE'S ONE OF THE GOOD ONES Posted: 2009-09-29 07:00:00 AM
I am sorry to hear of the shooting of "Smiley" He is one of the good ones. Growing up in Maracas Valley he has always shown interest in the youths and their well being if not by sending them into a maxi to go to school he was talking to them about doing the right thing. It saddens me that the very individuals he looks out for are the ones that have injured him... Get well soon "Smiley"
Police shooting Posted: 2009-09-29 04:41:00 AM
Had this article been about another police shooting you would have seen the comments, but thank to so many of us we are still law abiding citizens.Good job Mr. officer, good work community. One up for the police.
Smiling cop shot Posted: 2009-09-29 07:48:00 AM
If Martin Joseph and Patrick Manning have any sense of decency left, they will personally visit this cop and give their support, since they are the ones financially responsible, for bandits obviously possessing more sophisticated ammunition, than the police force in Trinidad today - Trini, Canada
Smiling cop shot Posted: 2009-09-29 07:55:00 AM
To think only yesterday, people in Trinidad were writing comments in the Express, about how those police officers just wanted to gun down the other bandit, called Aki. Give me a break people in Trinidad, you see what happened here. I only hope the police continues to gun down those parasites, it is the only way Trinidad will become a safe place again. The PNM government does not care that the bandit population has rapidly increased in recent times. Every where you look now, there are thieves coming into residential yards as well, and stealing, honest decent citizens cannot even live in peace in their own homes
Cop Shot Posted: 2009-09-29 08:22:00 AM
Yesterday some reader question a situation where an officer fell and his gun stolen, later the thief was shot and killed...I find Trinidad is so crazy is you kill the bandits or they kill you... You really think the two accomplice thought twice about shooting this officer ... Kill them
Keep Up The Hard Work Posted: 2009-09-29 10:18:00 AM
It's good to see the evolving of the crime detection and suppression units and police force as a whole back in Trinidad. God give him a speedy recovery cuz those are the kind of good, dedicated, law-abiding cops needed back in Trinidad which seems to be getting worse by the minute. Makes me think if I will ever return to sweet Trinidad. Dave, Virginia, USA (formerly St. James)
'Smiling' COP SHOT Posted: 2009-09-29 04:59:00 AM
I agree with the elderly woman..I'm really sorry for the person who shot him. he is one of the very few police officers who actually care about the nation's youths.
Police work Posted: 2009-09-29 06:28:00 AM
Next time call for back-up, officer "Smiley"...not saying you were not courageous, but this points to the lack of basic training in the T&TPF....this is not the wild west, officers need to understand proper protocol for responding to such criminal activity for their own safety...
Re: Police work Posted: 2009-09-29 08:58:00 AM
Since you know so much, you should go an join the force and train them on "proper protocol".........
Good luck on your recovery PC James. Posted: 2009-09-29 09:29:00 AM
I admire the work of this constable and what he had done to try and prevent this crime from happening, I hope he will have a speedily recovery. I am just wondering why, he did not call in on his radio immediately for backup (more police officers). This is the usual procedure when a police officer is alone and is responding to a crime scene. He should have called on his radio to report the crime before he walked into the pharmacy to stop this hold-up. Even if there was only one bandit and this police officer had caught him, and he managed to escape, with more police units on the scene, this bandit would have been caught immediately. Police procedures needs to be refined on how they go about their duty in responding to crime. Besides this, he should have used his radio to call in the code " Officer down". Radio dispatch should then be able to track and locate the officer radio and him, by pinpointing his location on a map. In the meantime, more police officers should have been sent to help him. Quick response by other police officers could save another police officer life.
Speedy Recovery Posted: 2009-09-29 11:50:00 AM
A speed recovery to Office Smiley. keep up the good work.
Diligent Officer. Posted: 2009-09-29 1:46:00 PM
Uncle Smiley kudos 2 u. We wish you a speedy recovery. You are the example of a devoted and diligent officer. God has you in the palm of his hands, they tried to pluck you out but your work is not yet done. From your in-laws, and family members in the USA. PS- we love you and are praying for you. god bless. NOTHING BUT LACK OF PROPER TRAINING. Posted: 2009-09-29 12:48:00 AM
Had this brave officer been trained properly,he might have handle the situation differently. It is "Standard Operating Procedure",when faced with a robbery, whether,it be a bank, grocery, pharmacy, etc, the assumption among trained personnel,is, that their could be accomplices on the inside,or outside,at the ready.I hope the Training Unit is formulating, all the actual different scenerios,to be used as teaching aids. These incidents recreated, can help to save lives by keeping the police and victims abreast,as to the different strategies used by the criminals. To beat them, you must study them. But I would not judge the officer's actions, since he was te one to make the split second decision,to wait,or not to wait.I wish him the best, because it's obvious he worked with what he had.At least he worked.I am pulling for you.Aubert Modeste
Hat's Off!! Posted: 2009-09-29 1:21:00 PM
Congratulations PC James!! Job well done! It's just unfortunate that you didn't think of shooting first and asking questions afterwards. These criminals need not be treated with common courtesy. Stop trying to save their lives or carry them to court. Useless efforts...just kill. And any of their family who have problems with that, don't hesitate to mete out the same treatment. I'm tired hearing "he was a good boy" or "they had no right to shoot him". Yet time and time again these NO GOODS are killing innocent people who are just trying to earn an honest days pay. I won't encourgage vigilante operations but SOMETHING needs to be done...and done fast. Hat's Off PC James. Recover soon and kill again!! Disgusted observer.
