Attorney General John Jeremie said yesterday he had concerns when the PNM was asked to submit its membership list to the court.
Asked about the right to privacy of the citizens of this country and their right to join a political organisation, Jeremie said: ’Of course I had concerns. I think that the right result was arrived at today. The list was not disclosed.’
’I think that was the proper procedure,’ Jeremie said.
PNM Chairman Conrad Enill said he was pleased that the PNM list had maintained its integrity. Enill said while the judge was within his right and he had the ability to make a determination in a particular way, ’I thought that (decision to have the party produce its list) was difficult to understand.
’In the circumstances we would have complied, but it was a difficult thing to understand because it seemed to us that ...this is a private organisation and people are entitled under the Constitution to have private association and the basis of joining our organisation is that it (this privacy) should be respected.’
He said fortunately there was a different way to get the information. ’Our witness was put into the box and the issue of the list never arose. There was equity in the way the manner it was handled. This was the correct decision,’ he said.
