5 cops face tribunal
...after three prisoners escape under their watch

DISCIPLINARY ACTION: James Philbert

Five police officers on duty at the time three prisoners broke out of the Chaguanas Police Station last Saturday, have been served notices informing them that disciplinary action will be taken against them.

The officers were served with the notices yesterday, and they will be called to defend themselves before a tribunal. If found guilty, they face suspension or termination.

The disciplinary action was recommended by Acting Police Commissioner James Philbert based on a report he ordered.

The three prisoners allegedly used a piece of iron to break two locks on a door leading out of the police station on Saturday afternoon. One man was recaptured the following day.

A second suspect, a 24-year-old of Cunupia, was recaptured yesterday at a house in Kelly Village, Caroni. One man remains on the run.

A separate investigation has meanwhile been launched into the events of Tuesday afternoon, when two prisoners charged with murder and drug trafficking pushed down their police guards and fled the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court. They were recaptured within an hour.

Meanwhile, the two suspects in the murders of teenagers Kolen Salandy and Rondel Thomas in Tobago are believed to be hiding somewhere in south Trinidad, police said yesterday.

A manhunt has been launched, as the men were spotted in the Princes Town area. And investigators believe the men are seeking help to leave the island by sea.

The search involved officers from the Crime Suppression Unit and Southern Division Task Force.

A release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service stated that the Coast Guard was patrolling in search of the suspects, and officers asked that residents be on the alert.

’Police officers also wish to advise the national community that it is an offence to harbour or aid any person wanted in connection with any serious crime,’ the release stated.

The teenagers’ battered bodies were found in the bushes at French Fort, Scarborough, two weekends ago. An autopsy revealed that their necks were broken. Salandy’s body was discovered by a religious group, while Thomas was found by police officers a few metres away. The teens had attended a party the night before.
