STRANGLED
Second autopsy shows prisoner did not commit suicide in police station

Tyrone Peters, who was initially believed to have committed suicide while in police custody, was in fact murdered, according to a second autopsy requested by his relatives.

Peters, 19, of Santa Cruz Old Road, Lower Santa Cruz, was held by police on August 18, and was expected to be placed on several identification parades in connection with various crimes in the North Eastern Division.

However, officers said they found him hanging on August 22 when they went to look for him in the cell in at the La Horquetta Police Station.

Following his death, an autopsy was performed by Russian pathologist Dr Valery Alexandrov. The results then revealed that Peters, also called ’T-Boy’, had died from hanging.

However, dissatisfied with the circumstances surrounding the death, a second autopsy was commissioned by the family and conducted on August 27 by pathologist Dr Hughvon des Vignes.

Des Vignes conducted the second post morterm at the body preparation room of the Saint Rose Funeral Home at Bazilon Street, Tunapuna, at 10 p.m. and took an hour. Des Vignes’ findings, however, revealed that Peters died as a result of throttling (application of armlock or chokehold). The second autopsy also ’did not confirm findings consistent with hanging’.

The second autopsy was ordered by Peters’ aunt, Kim Maytan, and his grandfather, Michael Marten.

Following Peters’ death, a full-scale investigation was ordered and Insp Mahabir, who is attached to the Tunapuna Police Station, was detailed to investigate the case.

Sources said yesterday that the file which contains the statements of officers on duty at the time of Peters’ death, along with Alexandrov’s autopsy results, was included in a report which was completed and forwarded to Sen Supt Joseph Edwards, who heads the Northern Division, yesterday.

The file, sources added, did not implicate anyone and was based on what was presented to the investigator.

Contacted yesterday, Maytan, who resides in the United States, said relatives have already enlisted the services of a group of attorneys to seek the family’s interest in the matter.

’We never believed that he (Peters) committed suicide. Everything which happened is a cover-up and something needs to be done to ensure the police do what they are supposed to, which is protect and serve,’ Maytan said.

Saying that the second post mortem results will be forwarded to their attorneys, Maytan said relatives had also been given the ’run-around’ by local authorities when they tried to get information. The family, she said, is only seeking justice and hopes to set an example so that such occurrences do not re-occur. The family also wanted the stigma that Peters had committed suicide to be cleared, Maytan said.

We Reach Hell. Posted: 2009-10-01 08:09:00 AM
When there is bold face Police cover up then we reach rock bottom as a society. Our leaders want to know how to curb crime, well they need only look in the mirror. With rampant corruption within major Government Agencies it seems that our country is a fish swimming up stream against the flow. So If this young man did not commit suicide the the police kill him and as usual not one will ever pay for this, because this is not the first time something like this has happened, and it happens regular in the Jail, but the public don't hear about it unless it is a high profile case. We need to Reform our laws or nothing will change.
Strangled Posted: 2009-10-01 09:05:00 AM
The relatives of this young man, should of made the same stand, when he was living a lawless life, to demand that he contribute to his life, community, and country something of value. One cannot agree with any form of violence, the air over T@T stinks.

Re: STRANGELED - Prisoner Tyrone Peters death not suicide Posted: 2009-10-01 1:32:00 PM
t&t have a serious mentality that "foreign " is better ,so it will be like pulling tooth to even open an investigation on the Russian. The question is who report /finding wrong the russian or the police

So now the hunter becomes the hunted! But in this case they want the police to protect and serve? One might wonder where the police were when he was on his crime spree? Who did they protect and serve? Well i say that they [the police] was not there for the good and honest public so why i ask should be there for this clown? and for all who think that this is not fair and that he is INOCENT, i ask this, how come i was not in a cell for questioning? The answer is simple i was at WORK not on the street robbing people!!!!!!!!!!! TRINI IN FEAR
Confused. Posted: 2009-10-01 06:15:00 AM
Now this matter leave from being a suspect in numerous crimes,to police should protect and serve. What about the innocent people he terrorized they had no justice, but the suspect(dead) must get justice.Who is guilty and who is innocent here, please tell me.
Strangled Posted: 2009-10-01 11:09:00 AM
For the people affected by his criminal activites, cause of death is irrelevant. The victims received their justice, and one less character to worry about, as you lock up your burglar proof jail like house, before going to sleep every night. Courtesy of the PNM government's lack of initiatives for crime reduction and relief in unemployment

Finally a family with guts to fight the police My birthland is now a burial ground for the innocent, the evil and corrupt seems to be running the island. I do NOT encourage anyone to visit this island...way to dangerous
STRANGLED Posted: 2009-10-01 08:03:00 AM
Thanks God for the police who are good, but God help the public with those who are rude, abusive and are in some cases worst than the murders. God is watching and what happens in the dark is brought to the light by GOD.
"he was a good boy" Posted: 2009-10-01 12:57:00 AM
I am sure that his family would say that "he was a good boy" Probably he was a 'good pest/criminal' The police should eliminate them one by one! ANY MEANS NECESSARY
Re: "he was a good boy" Posted: 2009-10-01 1:22:00 PM
They always do, and people tend to forget the victims and their family's lives, which were turned upside down by menaces like him
Not picking sides Posted: 2009-10-01 09:01:00 AM
However, half of you morons forgot the suspect is innocent till proven guilty. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. What happened if he was the wrong guy> Wake up people it is not the job of the police to play executioner. That boy never got a fair trial and now his family will sue and win.
Re: Not picking sides Posted: 2009-10-01 1:21:00 PM
Excuse me, but it was not the wrong guy, when you are a well known and frequent big thief in the community - thank you

Listen people, we are supposed to be living in a civilized country, the police are there to promote law and order and ensure that we the people get justice.Today this family grieves and tomorrow it may be one of us.If this child was murdered his family deserves justice. CLM Arima.
strangled Posted: 2009-10-01 1:28:00 PM
Who said the police are at fault? The guy was in custody with other criminals, who is to know if one of them exacted revenge for a gang-related or other criminal issue?
Civilized? Posted: 2009-10-01 11:04:00 AM
We living in a civilized society yes, but are the criminals acting civilized, so why show mercy on them. Although it's never easy to lose a loved one, when they do wrong the family should stand up and say so, be honest. The police finally doing their job, keep on.
shameless Posted: 2009-10-01 09:44:00 AM
How could we commend the police or sorry look the other way cause a criminal was killed (in a police station). The questions we should consider are why was he killed? and to cover up what? As a dead man, can he serve his time for the alleged acts he committed. I dont think his family believed that he was an angel but that doesn't justify a vicious end to his life. The laws of the land were set up to protect all (criminal or no criminal). Then when it happens to us we want to make noise too. Police are here to uphold the law, not take it in their own hands.
yes it is a possibility the cops are involved Posted: 2009-10-01 1:52:00 PM
if one has close connection with police officers you will be suprise to know the crimes that goes on in the police service
Killed by whom? Posted: 2009-10-01 4:03:00 PM
A society should not be judged by how it treats it's outstanding Citizens, but by how it treats it's criminals.Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is impotent.Crime will not stop.
Hang or Strangle same thing..YH Posted: 2009-10-01 11:12:00 AM
It good he gorne.. Same break neck anyhow as I see it. Better this for him than we spending money to feed he face while he wait for years for the "official hanging" Now he cant kill or maime any more law abiding people. Good riddance.
Such hate Posted: 2009-10-01 12:43:00 AM
Wow such hate. Regardless of what crimes the man did, there is no law that says the police has a right to kill anyone, particularly when in protective custody.
Tyrone Peters Posted: 2009-10-01 4:11:00 PM
Did his aunt and family in n y. get an attorney for his victims, this young man lived a life of crime, where is the shout for justice for all the people he terrorised,"there is an old saying live by the sword die by the sword"
Professional Opinions Posted: 2009-10-01 12:35:00 AM
One has to assume that both pathologists are professionals. Like in all professions, there could be differences of opinion. One, however, has to look at the circumstances surrounding the death. Hopefully, a coroner will render a decision which is conclusive.
justice for my nephew Posted: 2009-10-01 6:50:00 PM
All you people who think that it is good that my nephew is dead,I feel sorry for allyuh.Bible say judge not, and here some of you people are judging my nephew. He without sin cast the first stone.Regardless of what my nephew never killed anyone so he did not deserved to be killed by T&T crocked police. So all you people that have negative comment you could keep it, our family do not need it. Anyway who feels it knows it so you all should remember that you have family too and I am not going to be ignorant like y'all and say that yuh family should get murdered,God going to deal with y'all.Maybe that's why Trinidad so corrupt because people think like that.Unless you know him personally do not judge him maybe you were doing criminal activities with him, who knows.Anyway justice will be served for my nephew, his son ,my brother and our family and friends, PEACE
