Ryan Rivers stood with relatives outside his family’s home on Thursday night, as they all talked about attending a wake nearby. Little did they know that they would soon have to organise a wake of their own for Rivers.
Rivers, 24, was shot dead around 10 p.m. on Thursday. His killing pushed the murder toll to 410 for the year.
One of his relatives, who requested anonymity, told the Express they were standing in front of their Samaroo Village, Arima, home, preparing to walk over to a nearby wake, just before the shooting occurred. She said they then saw a car coming down their street.
’It kept stopping and going... like they didn’t know where they were going,’ she said, adding they did not think much of it until the car stopped alongside them.
One of the car’s occupants then leaned out and fired several shots, hitting Rivers several times about the body.
Rivers’s brother, Janzar Rivers, 30, ran to his fallen sibling and he too was shot, but in the leg, police said. Janzar was taken to the Arima District Hospital, where he was treated. He remained in stable condition at another hospital last night, police said.
Ryan, on the other hand, died on the spot.
Officers from the Northern Division Homicide visited the scene and are continuing investigations. They did not have a motive behind the killing and are continuing investigations.
