Cop shot: accused denied bail

ONE WEEK after PC Dave ’Smiley’ James was shot at a Curepe pharmacy, a 24-year-old Maloney man appeared before a Tunapuna magistrate charged for the crime.

James was still warded last night in stable condition at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope.

Osi Simmonds, of Gobin Avenue, Maloney Gardens, stood quietly as he was read a total of 11 charges by Magistrate Ramraj Harripersad yesterday.

The charges include the attempted murder of James, as well as armed robbery of the pharmacy of $28,000.

The other charges were possession of arms and ammunition and assaulting of some of the customers and employees during the incident on September 28 at the Complete Care Pharmacy.

Attorney Netram Kowlessar appeared for Simmonds and requested bail.

He said Simmonds was employed as a labourer with a Ministry of Works field office in Arima and that if he was not granted bail his job would be in jeopardy.

In response, court prosecutor Sgt Williams said Simmonds had four matters ’of a similar nature’ pending and noted that James was still in hospital.

Kowlessar said two of those matters had already been ’dealt with’. But Williams said that, ’while on bail on these two remaining offences he committed a similar offence’.

Harripersad refused the request for bail. The matter was adjourned to October 15.
