41,000 WANT GUNS
Minister reveals figures for firearm users' licences

REVEALING INFO: National Security Minister Martin Joseph speaks in Parliament yesterday. -Photo: MICHEAL BRUCE

A total of 2,198 people have been granted licences to carry guns over the last eight years-2002 to 2009-from a total of 41,759 applications.

And, for this year so far, 215 people have been granted firearm users licences out of a total of 4,220 applicants. Of this total 144 are not nationals of Trinidad and Tobago.

These figures were disclosed by National Security Minister Martin Joseph in the Senate yesterday in a written response to a question filed by Opposition Senator Lyndira Oudit.

Serious crimes carried out by unlicensed firearm users, especially homicides, have reached record highs in the past eight years with the highest-550-recorded last year.

Oudit had asked Joseph to reveal the number of persons who applied for firearm licences in Trinidad and Tobago annually and in total since 2002 and the number of applications approved.

Oudit also asked Joseph to reveal the number of non-nationals who were granted firearm licences since 2002.

In his response, Joseph used three charts that showed from January 1, 2002 to September 15, 2009 a total of 41,759 persons applied for firearm users licences in Trinidad and Tobago with a total of 2,198 having their applications approved.

Last year 7,957 people applied, the highest number of applications for the eight-year period.

The highest number of licences granted during any year from 2002 to date, however, was 514 and this occurred in 2004.

Joseph informed the Senate in his written response that from January 1, 2002 to September 15 of this year, a total of 360 non-nationals were granted firearms user licences in Trinidad and Tobago.

Of this figure, the 144 licences granted to non-nationals for the year so far marked the highest number for the entire eight- year period since the beginning of 2002.

We would not be reading this headline 2day, if the Gov't had listened to the pleas of the Nation, when crime started escalating. We the grass root were most at risk owing to the locality we are residing in. Did he listen OH No! he knew what was best for us the pple living in the hot spots as they are called. Today the crime is way out of control and is getting worst what the hell did they expect?'Grin and Bear' it? We can't take anymore and yes, we will protect ourselves by what ever means and stand the cnsequences later more so, when we're attacked in our homes. OAP's
Outrageous!!! Posted: 2009-10-07 07:18:00 AM
These numbers are an outrage. The number of license approvals barely breaks the 5 percent rate. It is no wonder that your citizens are being mowed down like cockroaches in a back alley. If the vast majority of people walking around with guns are illegally armed thugs and criminals as well as corrupt cops, then innocent people have no options to protect themselves. Given the sky-rocketing levels of crime present in TnT today, this country should be like an armed camp with any law-abiding citizen permitted to carry a gun for self protection. Maybe then, criminals would think twice before trying to jack someone up. The RIGHT for law-abiding citizens to carry guns should be enshrined in your constitution, particularly when your police are worthless when it comes to protecting the population.

Can someone tell me what is the criteria for a non-national to apply and receive a gun permit? Thanks in advance. This is ridiculous!!!!!
Firearm licences Posted: 2009-10-07 08:58:00 AM
An open suggestion. I believe that in order for a person to be granted a firearm licence and after approval they should make it manditory that all users should attend self defence classes, I believe its not just owning a firearm its the responsability of keeping one, protecting it and keeping it safe.
These figures do not add up Posted: 2009-10-07 07:17:00 AM
I am confused. This year, 144 non-nationals received licences out of 215 granted. Who are these non-nationals receiving this overwhelming figure of licences? Why are the citizens of this country, who under siege through the inefficiencies of the PNM governemnt, not receiving licences for firearms? What businesses are these foreigners involved in to receive licences at such a rapid rate?
Registered Guns will STOP the escalating crime rate, right?! Posted: 2009-10-07 10:56:00 AM
The government of Trinidad and Tobago make me scratch my head and wonder. In a country with an escalating crime rate due in part to GUNS, why are they giving MORE people guns. Go, government, Go
Re: Registered Guns will STOP the escalating crime rate, right?! Posted: 2009-10-07 11:13:00 AM
Because the PNM government finally accepted the fact that, they have failed miserably with crime fighting, and if you have a small business, you now need a gun too, to survive
41,000 Want Guns Posted: 2009-10-07 11:10:00 AM
Did not realize that you needed a licence for a gun in Trinidad, under the PNM government. Since it seems like the old wild west, anywhere you turn in Trinidad today. Maybe Minister Joseph should ask the bandits, who is providing their sophisticated ammunition , since they unfortunately seem to have a better calibre of weapons, in comparison to our esteemed police force
wrong people have guns Posted: 2009-10-07 11:45:00 AM
In trinidad the only people who suppose to have lisenced guns are the businessmen and the police abd those in authority. I am a businessman myself and i applied a few times for my lisence for a firearm but was turned down i was forced to move from trinidad and i run my business from away now
More Guns for non citizens Posted: 2009-10-07 11:55:00 AM
Alot of Nationals need fireamrs but they favour the non nationals. where is this countries priorities.. Plenty businessmen are in fear for their lives because or kidnappings. Grant them the liscence. As long as they fit the criteria.. not to every Tom Dick and Harry of course...

I have a friend who has need for a gun. This person is a female businesswoman who has alot of money and has been a victim of robbery several times... i say give the persons who need it. it shouls be granted to businessmen, Farmers( smaller firearms) and poeple of higher economic status that have need to protect him or herself because of the property and value they possess. Maybe, a bankstatement could show I need one. If I am a lady, and I rightfully own $2.5mil or more. It should be granted..

What the hell is this thje wild west. You wonder why the hell people are getting their asses shot off? Put guns into the hands of illerterates and the next thing you know you are living in Somalia south. God Lord whats wrong with you people.
Level the playing field Posted: 2009-10-07 12:23:00 AM
More people are applying for guns because there is obviously a feeling among the general public that the police are inadequate at best when it comes to protecting the citizens of this country. By granting licences to deserving applicants and enforcing training requirements I believe that the citizens have a fighting chance against criminals who seek to disrupt our lives and take away our peace of mind and the right to enjoy the freedom of our lovely country. LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD!!! Give us the means to defend ourselves
nonsence Posted: 2009-10-07 2:12:00 PM
I look at all these comment and i have to laugh.Yes this country is in the midst of a crime surge, however i don't think giving every tom dick and harry a gun will solve the problem, as a matter of fact I think it may make the problem worst. The people who are granted guns will themselves become a target. The nation will become a wild wild west, and who is to say that these same people would not begin to rent their guns to the same bandits or give their children it too protect themselves when they go out. I know that is happening already
the country has come to this? Posted: 2009-10-07 12:57:00 AM
It seems like people are giving the ok for businessmen to carry guns thus placing more value on property than on human life. What about the law abiding citizen with a family? Does he or she not have as much to defend and protect? There should be mandatory self defence classes where people learn how to use their weapons and neighbourhood watch organizations where people get familiar with neighbours and take a look out for each other. Bandits are cowards and if they know they have a neighbourhood to deal with they will have a 2nd thought about their activity.
