Mentally ill taken off streets
Mayor: This is not for C'wealth Heads of Government Meeting

PORT OF SPAIN Mayor, Murchison Brown, says the removal of mentally ill and socially displaced people from the capital’s streets is something they have always done and has nothing to do with this country’s hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) next month.

’You all only now seeing it, but we doing this for a while now ... I can’t even remember when it was started, but it is an initiative by the Port of Spain City Corporation to assist the St Ann’s Hospital and the walk-in mental facility,’ he said yesterday.

He made the comment yesterday after yet another drive targeting the homeless was launched in Port of Spain. The drive caused a stir, however, as many people felt it was just another repeat of the events carried out by the Ministry of Social Development prior to the Fifth Summit of the Americas last April.

Brown insisted that this process was done almost on a daily basis.

’We use our ambulance to pick them up and drop them off. If they are mentally ill, we carry them to St Ann’s, if they are not, we take them to wherever they have to go,’ he said.

Communications liaison at the ministry, Sheyna Weston, said they had nothing to do with the initiative, since they ’already have a socially displaced programme going on and that has never stopped’.

And when the Express contacted managing director at St Ann’s, Dr Ian Hypolite, about the issue, he confirmed that the programme was always on stream, but would add nothing further.

permanently? Posted: 2009-10-07 11:40:00 PM
Do the government plan to remove mentally ill people of the streets temporarily or preferably permanent. Why do you we only see changes and improvements when there is a big event? Who the government really trying to impress?
Mentally Ill Taken off streets Posted: 2009-10-08 00:15:00 AM
mentally ill sweep...how about sweeping for those who constantly mess the promenade on a daily basis between Charlotte and Henry streets...
Re: Mentally Ill Taken off streets Posted: 2009-10-08 6:10:00 PM
couldn't agree more. Those streets are a total mess and ressemble something from one of those utterly underdeveloped countries.

reading this article from 4,000 miles away and understanding, since days of Port of Spain schooling, that these people are really only being put away for a couple of months, in order that the Heads of State do not see them..why? That is hypocritical as homeless people are seen on the streets of London, Paris and New York...unless of course Trinidad is really looking after them, forever. Then that is a really admirable stance!Perhaps the other nations could take cue from the 'care' that Trinidadians are truly noted for...for those that are suffering..and homeless..??? !! xxx

Who do these people think they are fooling? If this program has been in effect for a long time and done daily, how is it no one noticed before. For the longest while downtown Port of Spain has been littered with the homeless and the insane. They have been a danger to pedestrians, workers and vehicular traffic alike and the government has always used legalities to defend their existence. Have the laws been changed where the government can now scoop them up and cart them off like they do in Jamaica around the tourist resorts. Any takers they will be back on the streets after the Commonwealth meeting. JT
Menatlly ill............ Posted: 2009-10-08 04:48:00 AM
Contrary to the Mayor's statement, the removal of the mentally ill from the streets is done solely due to the "Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting". Stop lying to the people.....This should be a continuous project, not selectively done by events/time/dates.
REMOVAL OF VAGRANTS Posted: 2009-10-08 04:58:00 AM
Do they really think citizens are that naive. If they were doing this all the time how is it that we are not seeing it. Does not make any sense. Its just like the berm on he Beetham. Work stopped immediately after the summit.
Taking the homeless off the streets Posted: 2009-10-08 07:14:00 AM
Of COURSE it has nothing to do with the CHOGM! How could anyone believe that it does? Except...oh yes! They did the same thing the last time, and as soon as the Summit was over everything stopped. On a scale of 1-10 in stupidity, with 10 meaning 'totally brainless', the people of T&T must be perceived by this administration as meriting an easy 11.
Yeah, right! Posted: 2009-10-08 06:13:00 AM
'Brown insisted that this process was done almost on a daily basis.' Who is the Mayor think he's fooling? Every day I have to walk over, step around or fearfully avoid these 'socially displaced' persons. Instead of seeing them 'disappear', I see one new one everyday. POS is their bed, their house, their spa, their living room, their toilet. Come again, Mayor, come again.
'We carry them to St. Ann's...' Posted: 2009-10-08 08:30:00 AM
'We carry them wherever they have to go.' Well, Allyuh really done reach, yes. Now the government is operating a taxi service for the Mad House and other socially displaced persons who just need a drop from here to there. Watch out maxi drivers! Bring on the CHOGM!
removal of the mentally ill /homeless Posted: 2009-10-08 08:46:00 AM
It is not enough to just remove them . There needs to be a rehabilitation component to the effort. Consider a place where they can be fed physically and spiritualy a site where the social worker can get a census identify there needs and if not total recovery but at least they are clean and fed. The nation will receive a blessing when such a system is implemented .This will open up an opportunity for the Church and other social organiziations to support the Government in it's efforts with the social problem of mental illness and homelessness.
Murchison Brown Posted: 2009-10-08 09:25:00 AM
that's a lie
Displaced Persons Posted: 2009-10-08 08:11:00 AM
Maybe Mayor Murchinson Brown needs to take a walk down to Broadway and look at all the displaced persons that are seen lying on the pavement on a daily basis, these people have been there for years only disappearing for a short time for the Summit and then back to their usual place.
Cleaning the Streets Posted: 2009-10-08 08:40:00 AM
Firstly, relocating persons from the streets to the 'mad house' is not dealing with the problem... it is accepting it. The problem still remaims why are so many people especially young men between the ages of 18 to 35 becoming 'vagrants/pipers/drug addicts'? And secondly, what happens when these homeless (not mentally ill) people have no where to go?... I thought that was the cause of them living on the streets in the first place. We are grateful for the effort, but we need to deal with the cause and not just the action.
Mentally ill taken off the streets Posted: 2009-10-08 09:01:00 AM
I cannot believe the Port of Spain mayor will think that we Trinis are still back in the ignorant and illiterate dark ages. Why can he not come clean. He knows this clean up is temporary and only because of the CHOGM. Mr. Mayor most times the truth works.
Dat is lie! Posted: 2009-10-08 06:27:00 AM
Didn't the Mayor say the same thing prior to the Summit? He and others like him, including the Minister, must surely take the people of this country for fools. If the removal of vagrants is being done on an almost daily basis, why is it there are so many of them still roaming the streets? Are they in excess of five hundred?
Mentally ill taken off the streets!! Posted: 2009-10-08 09:15:00 AM
Yeah right!!!!!!!!
Mentally ill Posted: 2009-10-08 07:03:00 AM
Yea right, the programme always onstream but is only when there is some conference or commonwealth meeting there is visual work taking place. They take the citizen for fools, things will change. RSR
Mentally ill Posted: 2009-10-08 07:55:00 AM
Mr. Mayor If you cannot remember anything is because it has never happened. Where are these homeless dropped off? Mr. Mayor it is better to fold your lips than to utter nonsense. You are removing the Mentally ill because of the upcoming conference. And that is that. there is no one to fire or question you.
Mentally ill taken off streets Posted: 2009-10-08 12:38:00 AM
Its all lies . they doing it for the big event. I dont know why Trinidad Government is trying to impress and pull the wool over the eyes of the world, to late for that Trinidad is known for the crimes and wicked government treatmet to its people. NYC
Mentally ill taken off streets Posted: 2009-10-08 11:13:00 AM
Thanks Mr. Mayor for insulting everyone's intelligence, you conducted this same exercise before the Summit, now you are doing another sweep again, right before another summit. Coincidence, probably not. Any citizen who frequents the streets of Port of Spain, can immediately identify the difference, between the number of homeless/mentally ill people that are on the streets before, and after the summit
in that case Posted: 2009-10-08 11:44:00 AM
the streets will be empty. all criminals are mental and most of the population has been driven mental. what a 'state'
Always wrong Posted: 2009-10-08 12:45:00 AM
This is "sanitisation" at the highest level. You feel you could mammaguy people? Why not develop more outreach services for these persons? I would like to learn how often you all give "free rides" to persons who are mentally ill? Drop them wherever they want to go, yeah right! What purpose do this action serve?
Public Menace Posted: 2009-10-08 3:13:00 PM
This is one of the best move the government has made in many years. No one should be allowed to use the public areas as their master bedrooms and bathrooms. If you have regular patrols to scoop them up they will find other areas. They may have rights. But the taxpayers also have a right to a clean city. Ray.Fbn
