Luxury vehicles arrive for CHOGM

Almost 100 luxury vehicles have been imported to Trinidad and Tobago to be used during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Port of Spain next month.

Philip Knaggs, president of the Automotive Dealers Association of Trinidad and Tobago, said yesterday that the 97 VIP vehicles were delivered by local dealers to the Government at the end of August.

The State has taken possession of 47 Toyota Prados, 26 Hyundai Santa Fes and 24 Mazda 6.2 cars to be used by Commonwealth heads and their delegations when the CHOGM is held in Port of Spain for two days at the end of November.

The vehicles are now undergoing final preparations to be ready for the meeting, and comprise the remainder of 200 luxury cars paid for by the State early this year.

More than 100 were brought in by local dealers, Toyota, Southern Sales and Neal & Massy Motors, for the Fifth Summit of the Americas conference in April.

Government paid $42 million for the 200 vehicles, which will be used by ministries and State agencies after next month’s international conference.

The vehicles were ordered to specifications which stated that they had to be painted black and must have room for several pieces of luggage.

Manning Heads of State are taxpayers burden! Posted: 2009-10-08 01:20:00 AM
Unbeleivable, but true...Mr Manning is going to again, (just as he did with President Barack Obama and his sidekicks) let the T&T taxpayers foot this hefty Bill and there is nothing they can do about that because the people of the nation do not unite and go out and march like people in other nations like Canada, the USA and Europe when they see their leaders misusing the nations funds. Instead, the only time they unite and jam down the place is for carnival so they have to take the pressure with the added govt. taxes for this heads of state event. And while T&T footing this massive Bill crime is continuing to spiral out of control, and a generation of young men that are supposed to be the future of the nation are dying because of their love-affair with guns and drugs and fast cars. They are caught in a quagmire of greed and materialism and a microwave-mindset that says if I cant have what I want now I will kill to get what my neighbor has. This behavior did not begin overnight but was bred in the incubator of their formative years when parents would not take the time to discipline and set the example their kids needed. Now it is too late because they are the criminals of today and they will shoot you without even blinking. And instead of the Govt. use the hard-earned tax payer dollars wisely by putting systems in place to curb the criminal behaviour of the nation;s youths they are importing expensive cars to drive these so-called heads of state around while the breeding ground for criminals and criminal activity continues to grow. I pray that this nation will awaken out of slumber. How long will you all keep voting for PNM. How long will you continue to complain? How long will you continue to fete and jam the place down while your nation descends into the bottom less pit of corruption and chaos? How long T&T? DO YOU REALLY LIKE IT SO? Trini in Toronto

42 million show off Posted: 2009-10-08 03:03:00 AM
What a waste of tax payers money, and big show off. That 42 nmillion could have been better spent on water roads and bridges to ruel areas.
Luxury Posted: 2009-10-08 05:29:00 AM
Hyundai Santa Fe is NOT a luxury vehicle
we like it so Posted: 2009-10-08 03:17:00 AM
42 million and people cannot get basic health care.
So proud Posted: 2009-10-08 02:09:00 AM
Wow....more cars at the taxpayers' expense....I am so proud....then they will be given to Ministers and their families to go to Maracas on the weekends.....So very proud
$42 million for 200 vehicles Posted: 2009-10-08 06:13:00 AM
Correct me if i'm wrong but didn't the Govt.not buy vehicles for the Obama visit a few months ago.Why are they buying vehicles every time there is a meeting of Heads of Countries.Would it not be better to lease limos on a as needed basis? Pat
Squander!!! Posted: 2009-10-08 07:41:00 AM
This is absolute nonsense.....$200 million on vehicles & what will become of them afterwards?!....which ministers friend will benefit?!...

Luxary vehicles arrive for chogm Posted: 2009-10-08 07:55:00 AM
What positive impact this will have for the economy. The state has spent 42 million for these vehicles.Would these VIPs spend in excess of 42 million to benefit the economy. What is in for me one would ask?Would these people invest in T&T?
Cars for summit Posted: 2009-10-08 02:34:00 AM
Two hundred more - Keep wasting money
I must have amnesia Posted: 2009-10-08 02:41:00 AM
Forgive me if I am imagining things, but didn't we import within the last few months, luxury vehicles with these same specifications? Why couldn't we simply use those again? Clearly a lack of planning and forethought. Oh who am I kidding, this is just a facet of the selfish principle that seems to guide this country. Maurice R
luxury vehicles arrive for CHOGM Posted: 2009-10-08 02:47:00 AM
Since when those vehicles are considered luxury, come on people! get with it!!!!!!
42 million mistakes.... Posted: 2009-10-08 08:23:00 AM
Mark my words: After the CHOGM is over, those $42 million 'luxury' vehicles will have the shelf life of a police car right after the commission of a violent crime in a police jurisdiction. When it comes to preventative maintenance, I award the 'government' of this nation a big fat zero. And oh, by the way: Just how much of this $42 million initial cost was set aside for after purchase or periodic maintenance for these vehicles? My guess? Probably not one red cent. Steups!
LUXURY CARS IMPORTED Posted: 2009-10-08 07:15:00 AM
Oh my God...42 million dollars!!!! What is wrong with this Gov't? I started to comment on this blog, but in all honesty, I am saddened for the people of TnT who are in need...I am lost for words...Kiya
Are We So Dotish? Posted: 2009-10-08 07:28:00 AM
What happen to all the cars that they used for the last summit, why do they need another 100 for? The cost of living get so high and we Government spending like there is no tomorrow. Do us a favor Mr.Manning and set a date for local Government elections please.
waste Posted: 2009-10-08 07:28:00 AM
whats more embarrassing than over 400 murders in a country with a decreasing population of less than 1.5Million people? spending recklessly when there are literally people living on the street and have no infrastructure in place to find a job to support themselves and family. the government would have had a better image in that type of money was re-invested into the people.. an below than average salary would be $25,000 .. maybe hire 2000 detectives and place them on every square kilometer of the country with cell phones so that every life is cherished and crime dealt with as it happens. the courts are dealing with matters more than years ago, over ridiculous cases as a school boy and a grown man help for a gram or two of weed. whats going on? maybe its easier for a "cop" to catch a man smoking herb rather than catching and investigating a murder where a life was taken..
thats is what is important Posted: 2009-10-08 07:37:00 AM
it seems that the goverment has money to spend on much more important things other than the esculating crime you go guys good job
In times like this, why is government wasting money? Posted: 2009-10-08 07:43:00 AM
I would like to know, why it is the government is continueing to throw away all this money, behind new vehicles? Who is the person or persons responsible for ensuring that things like this does not happen? Why did we not use the same vehicles that were bought for the Sumit of the Americas. Mr. minister the Tamana Tech Park project had to stop, because of a shortage of funds, construction has his rock bottom and I can go on and on. Tell me, "Is this the way to go when we are dealing with a crisis.
Vehicles Posted: 2009-10-08 07:55:00 AM
So where the vehicles they used for the Heads of the Americas sumit. No money and yet still the buying very very expensive cars for one week use. I guess they will be parked around the pm billion dollar house. pnm will run we down to the dust...
vehicles Posted: 2009-10-08 08:00:00 AM
It was my understanding that the vehicles purchased for the summit of the Americas were also to be used for CHOGM, why are we buying more vehicles now?
Luxury vehicles arrive for CHOGM Posted: 2009-10-08 09:33:00 AM
Well it is nice to see Manning's ministries and state agencies staff will have luxury vehicles to cruise around with, after the summits/conference, while all of us taxpayers must tighten our belts, and ride to work in a donkey cart, but we like it so
conference vehicles Posted: 2009-10-08 05:38:00 AM
What happened to all the "luxary" vehicles the government purchased for the April Conference ??
Luxury vehicles arrive for CHOGM Posted: 2009-10-08 08:17:00 AM
Thanks to the Express, people can still voice their opinions, since we seem to have no useful opposition party in Trinidad today, to do so. It is truly disgusting that this PNM government is squandering our hard earned earn tax dollars on luxury vehicles. When most of the time, our police officers do not even have a car to respond after a call from a taxpayer, for assistance in a crime situation in progress, Downright disgraceful of this PNM government!
Why not use ministry vehicles? Posted: 2009-10-08 09:56:00 AM
There are so many ministry vehicles like Prados, Camrys, Royal Saloons, Pathfinders etc. that are being given to PNMstooges to drive. WHy not save the taxpayers' money and use these instead of purchasing new ones? This is a blatant abuse of the public purse.
Luxury vehicles Posted: 2009-10-08 10:18:00 AM
Could someone please indicate why the vehicles that were used for the Summit could not have also used for the CHOGM? No wonder there is now a cash flow problem and we are now being asked to pay increased property taxes to make up for the shortfall.
Luxury Cars Posted: 2009-10-08 06:21:00 AM
Here we go agian, spend!spend! spend! what a wasteful government
42 million dollars? Posted: 2009-10-08 09:18:00 AM
42 million dollars down the drain. I wonder if we will see the ministers driving these cars after CHOGM
Stop trying to act like a 1st world country Posted: 2009-10-08 09:43:00 AM
Trinidad should be cleaning up the terrible crime instead of spending 42 million for so called luxury vehicles. Since when are Toyota's, Mazda's, and Hyundai's luxury vehicles. Trinidad stop pretending and fix up your country.
Why? Posted: 2009-10-08 09:45:00 AM
What a waste!
Luxury vehicles arrive for CHOGM Posted: 2009-10-08 10:28:00 AM
Well after the summit, since Manning says our economy has slowed down, despite all of the wealth we still receive from our Natural resources. Maybe the PNM government can charge each of us $100.00 for a short ride in the luxury cars, to help raise funds for the treasury
Where the vehicles gone? Posted: 2009-10-08 06:36:00 AM
What happened to the vehicles that were purchased for the Summit of the Americas? I thought those were going to be used for the CHOGM too??
Luxury Vehicles for CHOGM Posted: 2009-10-08 10:49:00 AM
Here we go again. Another costly display of Trinidad & Tobago's hospitality. There were so many budget cuts in various Ministries, particularly Ministry of Social Development & Ministry of Education and these are the key areas to which we should address the foundation of our country's future. It's tough to understand what sort of lesson our 'democratic leaders' are projecting to the populace.
Luxury vehicles Posted: 2009-10-08 10:53:00 AM
What a shame, the Government is importing 100 luxury vehicles yet we have citizens collecting water from drains.. Canatrini
Oh no not again! Posted: 2009-10-08 12:19:00 AM
No water, no houses, no medical provisions but here we go again buying cars for temporary use and show. Also begs the question, who uses these cars when the visitors leave town? This is purely rhetorical: just like jobs it's cars for the boys! What blind indifference to accountability to the people. Thankfully there's life and judgement after life in this world. This regime will pay for the way they've exploited this dear country of mine.
Luxury vehicles arrive for CHOGM Posted: 2009-10-08 08:27:00 AM
Where do you find the words when you read an article like this? Manning and his PNM government wants us to tighten our belts, but their spending is more loose than a size 48 belt on a size 34 waistline. One can only assume that, it is one of the PNM government's priority, to host two summits in one year, and spend probably billions of dollars, by the time it is all over. While, we have no beds in our hospitals, a crime rate that has spiraled out of control, unemployment that has left us in hopelessness, especially our young adults, not to mention complete gridlock on the roads, among other priorities. There are many unresolved critical public matters that the PNM government could have fixed with that money, by putting their own people first, but unlike the luxury cars arriving, hope is still far away, from arriving
vehicles... Posted: 2009-10-08 11:44:00 AM
What about food and infrastructure? We have bridges collasping in the North and here we are spending 42 million for 100 imported vehicles? Ou weee.
Again Posted: 2009-10-08 1:49:00 PM
Again????????? Whatever happened to those from the summit???
Luxury vehicles arrive for CHOGM Posted: 2009-10-08 08:49:00 AM
You have to give the PNM government a lot of credit, although they are preaching everyday, that they have limited resources to seriously fix any of the problems facing our nation today, they somehow found money to throw extravagant summits and conferences. The world knows what is going on in Trinidad today, where there is crime everywhere, and the PNM government have been consistently futile to even appease the problem. Unemployment is everywhere, with gross poverty like we have never seen before. I consider myself lucky to still be able to put food on the table, while many of my fellow country men can barely afford do so for their families. Still champagne will be flowing again, for a second time this year, at the expense of a financially struggling nation, courtesy of the PNM government
