A TRINIDAD-born Canadian citizen was yesterday committed to stand trial at the High Court for the murder of an American citizen earlier this year, outside a fete on Cipriani Boulevard, Port of Spain.
Chief Magistrate Sherman McNicolls, presiding in the Port of Spain Eighth Court, said the prosecution in the matter was successful in making out a prima facie case against Shawn McClean, 30, for the shooting death of Leevurn Lyons, 29, of Oakland, California, on Carnival Sunday.
McClean’s sister, La Sharn McClean, 25, was also committed to stand trial. She was accused of knowing Shawn McClean to be guilty of an arrestable offence, and acting with intent to prevent his apprehension and prosecution.
She is also accused of aiding her brother in committing the murder. She was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 to be approved by a Clerk of the Peace.
Gilbert Peterson SC led evidence for the State, while Pamela Elder SC, Richard Mason and Ian Brooks represented the two accused.
Since the preliminary enquiry began in May, the State has led close to 30 witnesses into evidence.
It was the State’s case that on the morning of February 22, two people had an altercation with Lyons outside the ’Dawn’ fete. Lyons was shot dead during the argument.
