T&T strikes US$75m ferry deal with Austal

Australia’s aluminium shipbuilding industry has received a boost with the Austal company securing a US$75 million contract to build four fast ferries for Trinidad and Tobago.

Two vessels will be built at Austal’s Margate shipyard and the other two in Western Australia.

Austal Margate operations manager John van Meekeren said the Tasmania, Australia shipyard specialised in small to medium-sized vessels.

’The contract was announced on September 14 and by building two here and two in WA, it will ensure we will have the whole contract completed within 12 months,’ he told the Mercury newspaper in Tasmania.

Construction on the two catamarans has started and the completed vessels are expected to be launched in May and June next year.

’They will be loaded on board a heavy-lift ship and taken to Trinidad and Tobago that way,’ van Meekeren said. ’The journey takes around 32 days, at the other end the crane puts them back in the water.’

The fast catamarans are being built for Trinidad and Tobago’s water taxi service, which aims to reduce road congestion with each vessel carrying up to 405 passengers at about 37 knots.

salaries are so low in Trinidad Posted: 2009-10-12 03:12:00 AM
Why is the governmen wasting tax payers money? Build hospitals, proper roads, better street lights, drainage, increase salaries, etc. People will not be able to afford to pay to travel by ferries because their income is too low. What is really wrong with Hat-trick Manning? This man has wasted our money for too long. Kick him to the curb!
Additional Ferries - Excellent Idea Posted: 2009-10-12 05:51:00 AM
Definitely a step in the right direction. Anyone who've use the POS to San Fernando ferry service will agree it's one of the most efficient and effective services provided by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. I was proud to see the high level of efficiency and remarkable customer service provided by the authorities of the Water Taxi Service. Hopefully sometime soon this same level of efficiency can be transferred to the Port Authority - Tobago Ferry Service, particulary the Tobago Port Authority.
You don't even have proper roads!!!1 Posted: 2009-10-12 06:01:00 AM
Why sink money into these vessels when you don't have proper roads in Trinidad and Tobago. In most towns there are no sidewalks. Holes go without repair to damage cars. Widen the roads you have now and fix the problems like Mosquito Creek, what about bridges you have to repair. There is so much waste in Trinidad I feel sick every time I hear about it and not about a new hospital being build or schools being repaired. Ellen in MD

Why!can the goveriment have local ship builder construct these ship?.The country has a wide enginering field and fercility including steel and ship yards .It is time we move on and stop this nonscence the goveriment is doing. Just think how much people in Austrila is going to benifit from this $75 million US . An poor Trinidad and Tobago people just have to watch. The T&T goveriment have to send a rep.to oversee the construction how much are they going to pay this indivdual to live in Austrila while these ship are under construction.
Ferry deal with Austal Posted: 2009-10-12 08:05:00 AM
How come is only after the contract is completed that the people find out about it....Isn't there some kind of approval process or is this the Manning Approval....
ah here we go again Posted: 2009-10-12 09:57:00 AM
As I recalled we had some boats purchased recently what happened to them. The PNM Government is clearly wasting the money by not planning what they do. A total waste of tax payers money, mismanagement and lying, fooling the citizens of this country. Shame, shame, shame, on Manning and the PNM Government. I dare U to show my point of view
Not a good investment Posted: 2009-10-12 1:59:00 PM
Lets do the maths shall we? Cost of vessels: US$75M = TT$475M One way fare: $15 Daily Revenue Stream based on full capacity on 8 trips / day x 2: $97,200 Annual Revenue:$25,272,000 Assuming that there is no downtime, maintenance or running expenses (although we know that all of the above will apply) Number of years to recoup investment: 18.8 years 19 years based on a straight calculation! Can anyone tell us if these ferries will even last as long as that? Has anyone even bothered to subject this to the same kind of analysis shown above? It would appear that based on the analysis, the $500M would have been better spent putting 500 additional buses on the road that would move an additional 25,000 persons every day. Or perhaps in decentralizing Government (away from POS) and implementing flexi-hours in schools, public and private sectors.
