Query over firearm licence snub

The San Juan Business Association is calling on Acting Commissioner of Police James Philbert to explain to the national community why between the period January 1 and September 15 only 215 firearm licences were issued. This represented five per cent of those who applied, the association said.

Of that five per cent, 144, or 67 per cent, were issued to non-nationals, the business group added.

’It is amazing that firearm licences are being issued to non-nationals who do not have a command of the English language. It is also amazing that businessmen and women who legitimately seek to protect their interests and their property are being denied the right so to do in an increasingly hostile and dangerous environment,’ the business group said in a statement on Saturday.

’The SJBA is calling on the Acting Commissioner of Police to inform the business community why so may of our members are not meeting the requirement for firearm licences and instruct us as to what can be done to correct this situation.’

There are enough guns in the country, no more permits should be issued.

I'd like to hear you say that when you find yourself staring down the barrel of a bandit's gun. No chance of defence for you or your family. Level the playing field and we'll sort it out ourselves as the authorities cannot it seems. Simon S.

A query is a waste of time and money. It is called PNM incompetence, they know they cannot protect us decent and hardworking people, from the criminal elements, who comes from a certain part of the country. Yet the PNM government still obstruct us from the right to protect our property. We might as well leave our business doors wide open, in the middle of the night unprotected, in PNM la la land, and have our businesses destroyed from what we have now, an infestation of bandits
PEOPLE JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND Posted: 2009-10-12 1:43:00 PM
People do not understand that legal firearms do not kill people,as much as illegal ones.To get a firearm(illegally)you need money,to get a licensed firearm, you also need money. As long as you can "grease"the hands of certain people, you will get your license. The next criterion is to be a beautiful lady who is prepared to "run"something. So people should stop referring to how many guns are in the country. The fact is more guns are in the hands of criminals, than law-abiding citizens. How many legal firearms are responsible for the 418 murders,as of today? That's the real issue. No government must deprive law-abiding citizens of their fundamental rights,to protect themselves and their families. The approach by citizens should be to take legal action against the authorities, whenever they can establish, that the Government caused the death,or injury of someone, because of insufficient(negligence) protection. Not providing adequate protection is the same,as if you(the Government)actually killed,or damaged the victim, because you are aware of the serious danger out there.Aubert Modeste
