Flu panics parents

The confirmation of a case of the H1N1 Influenza A virus at the Exchange Presbyterian School in Couva yesterday panicked parents, who rushed to the school to take their children away.

It happened despite instructions by the Education Ministry that the school remain open, and that the teacher and classmates of the sick child be tested for the illness commonly known as ’swine flu’.

Roustan Job, president of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association (TTUTA), said, ’We spoke with our representative at the school and there is a child who tested positive for the virus. She showed symptoms since Monday, but they learned today that she has it.’

Job said since the child had been in contact with others, it was advised that parents take their children (in that particular class) to be tested, as well as the class teacher. Job said, ’A representative from the Ministry would have visited the school and had meetings with the staff. We informed our representative of the protocol we have agreed to, that the Ministry of Health is the authority that will advise on what steps should be taken.’

A school official yesterday said that classes at the school had not been suspended, but that the administration was awaiting further instructions from the Ministry on what was the next step.

The school should be closed cleaned by professionals from the health dep.the vaccine will not be available until Mid Novermber, how many people will die before then? Narace is not telling people where to go and get the vaccine and, how are poor people going to afford this vaccine? IF they can get it before November? The people are once AGAIN left stranded as always when it comes to this disinterested lazy gonverment. no one believes any thing this lying Health minister says anyway. NYC

This situation was handled poorly by the school authorities (principal, teachers)in the sense that parents who had each other phone contacts had to call each other and when you got to the school teachers were in a meeting in the staff room and all these kids left alone leaving the school without supervision.
Medical incompetence in our Hospitals Posted: 2009-10-15 11:51:00 AM
It may get worse. Why because the health care in T&T is woefully low on competence. We need better equipment and medicine and well trained Drs and Nurses. People are dying from haemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome. If this a problem for the Ministry of Health what else will pose a more tragic experience.

WARNING: Parents whatever you do. Don't let your kids take that H1N1 flu shot. It's still in the testing stage and they don't even know what the side affect is, even medical staff in the US are refusing to take it. They using people as the ginnea pigs. Anyone sick should stay home. Employer and School should encourge that. It's being done in the states. Trini/USA
