The Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce is calling for an investigation into all projects using foreign labour.
President of the Chamber Stephen Cadiz made the call on Wednesday following Tuesday’s protest action by Chinese labourers who claimed their human rights are being violated.
Cadiz said: ’Too many times we read of the mistreatment of foreign workers in other countries, this must not be the case in Trinidad and Tobago.’
Cadiz said an investigation would determine the terms and conditions of the employment of the foreign workers and ensure that ’the allegations of non-payment of wages, poor working conditions poor living conditions...’ are not real.
He said ’The administration has boasted time and time again of the work ethic of these foreign workers and their ability to deliver projects on time. To now see protest action being taken for all the reasons that we would have thought would have been issues long past this country’s history is truly disturbing’.
He said the persons who determine the terms and conditions of employment for these class of workers must be held accountable for ensuring that all conditionality’s are met and that there cannot be any flouting of the labour laws of this country.
Cadiz also expressed concern over the manner in which the police dealt with the protest by the Chinese workers on Tuesday.
