'Beetham people want war'
...residents block highway, PBR in show of force

CHAOS: A Beetham resident is arrested, left, at the scene of yesterday's protest action on the Beetham Highway, where tyres were thrown across the east bound lane and set ablaze. -Photos: ABRAHAM DIAZ

’BEETHAM people want war tonight!’

This was the remark made by police yesterday evening as they swooped down on the Beetham Gardens after residents blocked both the Beetham Highway and the Priority Bus Route in protest of two police killings in the area late Wednesday night.

Amid all the chaos brought on by the unwanted presence of the lawmen, a church service being conducted in Hell Yard, near the basketball court, was in full swing.

The Express heard several gunshots upon arrival at Hell Yard and was told by police to ’go back, go back’, as three van loads of officers hurried out of the area, warning all those outside to get back inside. Two jeeps remained on the scene as the Express adhered to the request of the police.

Officers from the Inter-Agency and North Eastern Task Force responded and spread their manpower across the narrow streets of Beetham Gardens while van loads stationed themselves both on the highway and PBR.

The protest action began on the Beetham Highway just after 6 p.m. yesterday, with residents setting alight anything they could drag on to the roadway.

The result was a massive pile-up along the highway as two of the three lanes of the highway, near the beginning of the Beetham berm, were impassable.

The protest also caused commuters in Port of Spain and at the City Gate hub to spend longer periods on maxi-taxi and taxi stands waiting for transport to take them to their eastern and southern homes.

At one stage, residents also threw rocks, pieces of bricks and debris at passing vehicles on both transit sides of their homes.

In the melee, one woman pulled down her pants, showing off her colorful underwear to the officers and gyrated while shouting out obscenities to them. She was later seen, this time less rowdy, as she was being escorted into the back of a police van. She was later released by the police and told to ’go home and see ’bout yuh children’.

Officers at the scene said they were operating under a ’zero-tolerance’ policy and added that any ’arrestable offence’ would be met with the proper response.

Time to relocate the residents and convert the Beetham and Sealots to parks Posted: 2009-10-15 11:39:00 PM
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. For too long crime has been emanating from that area. And it's known. If you get a flat on the Beetham KEEP DRIVING. It's a hazardous area with people crossing the highway salvaging items from the dump. People have been relocated in the National interest before so it's time to do it with the Beetham and Sea Lots. Clear the areas and put lovely PARKS instead. We want to promote T&T and yet we leave these unpleasant areas right at the entrance of the city. Action.

this is just low class madness...
beetham riots Posted: 2009-10-15 11:53:00 PM
congrats to the police service. they should swoop dpwn on beetham every day... these people feel that they are a law unto themselves... not one bit of it.
protest Posted: 2009-10-16 00:29:00 AM
Imagine they are protesting for two bandits killed in a shootout, when the Police does nothing they also protesting .The Police are never doing enough to stop crime, and when they do it's another problem. How do you please the public.
Zero tolerance Posted: 2009-10-15 8:33:00 PM
Hooray to all our officers. You have our full support. Your "zero tolerance" policy is highly applauded. Keep up the good work
beetham want war Posted: 2009-10-16 02:01:00 AM
try to make peace not war,why dont they go down to broadway and block the street and protest also for that murdered young man trying to make an honest living.
beetham war Posted: 2009-10-16 04:40:00 AM
it is true, this is the symbol of a 3rd world nation, of course our great Prime Minister will not see the problem which is being created, the gov't does not effectively deal with this and the prob persists, i mean really.....what do we expect from a power hungry PM and a Partying President?
The picture Posted: 2009-10-16 05:06:00 AM
This is something I've seen many many times and I always wonder, is it proper and lawful for the police to be transporting people in the trunk/tray of their vehicles? /kw Trinidad
You have to give to get Posted: 2009-10-16 01:28:00 AM
Yo... y'all make no sense to me there in the Beetham. It will always be "we killing people and harbouring the criminals, but we really innocent... i swear mr. police man!" followed by "we have a right to bun down de place and be lawless cuz we vex the police catch us and shoot back after we shoot them first" Just know that after that last "tantrum" you threw last night, your fellow trinis are becoming increasingly impatient with you and will care less about your plight cuz you clearly don't give a damn about us. What the heck do we have to do with you and the police? You mashin up our cars... robbing us on the highways... lawless. You want mercy? You want fairness? You want justice? Well friends, you have to give to get. And what you give, is exactly what you will get.
Heartless Posted: 2009-10-16 01:37:00 AM
The individuals responsible for blocking the roads and then throwing things at the cars are heartless. Those people in transit had nothing to do with what was going on with the residents. Those people, who were already tired and just trying to make their way home, had to, like always pay for what is going on in this country. These innocent people are always the once that have to suffer the burden. Why couldn't the Beetham residents go and protest at a police station? As usual they like to target the innocent people. They could have come up with a more civilized way to deal with their issue, but no, because they really don't care!
Beetham people want war Posted: 2009-10-16 05:42:00 AM
Law enforcement people release the full brunt of the law on these degenerates and take no prisoners.I am tired of reading that these delinquents were never on the scene of crimes committed according to their relatives...I am willing to take a bet that each and everyone of them who were killed by the police have previous or pending offences against them...Where were their now crying familes when the delinquents were killing and damaging citizens of the country.."Smoke them out Mr Police Commissoner".
Zero tolerance? Posted: 2009-10-16 07:11:00 AM
Ent allyuh let the panty lady go? I thought her behaviour was an arrestable offense... i guess indecent exposure is only something you get arrested for in the U.S. Oh yeah, and WHERE WAS THE ARMY????
Beetham PPle Want War Posted: 2009-10-16 07:13:00 AM
These pple who are creating Havoc in the area should be locked up and there homes should be searched. They are not all bad around there. The few that are doing all the wrongs need to be removed and housed elsewhere.Put them under house arrest and should be prevented from going back to that area and if caught prison time for a very long period. Those pple are hell bent on carrying the country even further down the pit by the way of crime. Concerned Pple
Beetham People want war Posted: 2009-10-16 03:18:00 AM
I do not always agree on how police handle situations in this country. But I cannot blame them as well. They have to face these youngsters that have no moral left every day. So yes the police should apply no tolerance when dealing with them now. Mothers Fathers have to bring up their children better instill morals in them and themselves. It has gotten out of hand, that youngsters could decapitate a person and play football with the head.... After all said and done the parents always crying " But my son was a good boy he never do anything wrong" Yah Right!!!!! The police should use "No tolerance"
See what we up against? Posted: 2009-10-16 07:41:00 AM
People complain about the robberies & the murders, and say police can't handle the problem - see what police are up against? Too many people benefiting from those doing the robberies & murders to want it stopped.
what nonsense! Posted: 2009-10-16 02:44:00 AM
if you idiotic police officers would stop treating them like second class citizens then maybe this kinda of crap wouldn't happen!
Re: what nonsense! Posted: 2009-10-16 10:24:00 AM
Well if they behave like second class citizens, then naturally they will be treated like second class citizens. Do you ever see that kind of idiotic and lawless behaviour any where else in the country
Re: what nonsense! Posted: 2009-10-16 09:47:00 AM
Please engage your brain before you put pen to paper. These police are very clever.Had they not executed them first,it could have been the other way.Pple are treated the way they treat others. We know most of these guys who are killed are well known murderers themselves. Ask for a report on any one of these fellaows and you sure to get a list. How many pple have perhaps been killed, robbed or whatever.
Beetham Bachanal! Posted: 2009-10-16 06:54:00 AM
But what sparked this drama on the Beetham? It was very disturbing to hear this over the radio through a citizen who was in the traffic when this commenced. She was scared that something would happen to her. What is happening in this country?
Beetham protest Posted: 2009-10-16 07:01:00 AM
I agree "zero tolerance". Glad they released the woman and hope she realised she could have spent a night in jail....foolish behaviour! Is time the powers that be lock down or get rid of entirely that "area".
Beetham people wnat war... Posted: 2009-10-16 03:22:00 AM
Careful what they ask for, they just might get it.... Really gunshots ringing out while officers stop there protest...Right and they want us to believe that they innocent...
beetham Posted: 2009-10-16 08:49:00 AM
Sick and tired of these people. Move them all out and raze the area. Never does anything wrong. Bunch of THUGS.
BEETAM WAR Posted: 2009-10-16 08:58:00 AM
These poeiple are alreay at war , and it is between themselves .Unfortunately innocent people are the resulting causualities .People of the Beetam who commit crimes need to know that that this is not a heaven for them to retreat to . MAJOR PROPS FOR THE POLICE . Good job ! ! ! Arnie -Toronto
Stories of the ghetto. Posted: 2009-10-16 03:45:00 AM
My fellow brothers & sisters, we are all Trinbago people, we need to get rid of the Ghetto of the mind. We have serious social issues going on, yet we fighting and killing each other over petty things. We need to protest to the government over better living conditions and crime. You people from the Beethem rid your minds of that Ghetto mindset.
Lawlessness Posted: 2009-10-16 03:59:00 AM
Beetham always have had a strong lawless element residing there. Law enforcement have to deal with these people with an iron fist. They understand nothing else. The law abiding citizens will welcome the presence of law enforcement the others will not.
re:Swift Justice Posted: 2009-10-16 08:01:00 AM
Sorry to say I was on the promenade when the original shooting occured and I was appaled at the lack of Major Police presence in the heart of POS at that time of night, almost everyone knew the dvd man was from the beetham and some were even saying they wanted him a long time ago, because he making an honest living, now why should a man be taxed because he decided to do something positive with his life ? I'm not saying the police killed the guys who did it but honestly a message must be sent to the residents of the areas who harbor these criminals, give the authorities information or get them criminals out of your neighborhood, or your sons could die an innocent death, and honestlt that's the reality of our society, we need to clean the nation of these scum-bags...Concerned citizen POS
re:Swift Justice Posted: 2009-10-16 1:01:00 PM
I pay my fair share of taxes, why shouldn't he?
War in the streets of Beetham Posted: 2009-10-16 04:19:00 AM
War in Beetham, war in St. James, war against the unions, war against the CJ, war against people of integrity. Patrick Manning and his minnions are guilty of 'war' against the people.
Beetham want war! Posted: 2009-10-16 08:25:00 AM
When the government and the police begin to treat the Beetham residents like humans/people, the people of Beetham Gardens will begin to act civilized. First they had those people living in a foul-scented area. I tell no lie. Every person who travelled in a Maxi taxi will tell you that when the maxi taxi passes on the PBR the passengers have to hold their nose. There seems to be some waste that is settled in the 'drains' that causes the odour. Maybe there is no proper drainage. It is as if Beetham Gardens is annexed from Trinidad. Put good infrastructure into the towns and villages, give the people a better chance to develop themselves, please. They are people too. God never made 'no' junk! Everybody is somebody! ac,md
Re: Beetham want war! Posted: 2009-10-16 2:23:00 PM
The pple will not behave any different because that's all they know and how they live.Anyone who has a little self respect or pride, in the first place would never have gone to live near to a Labasse or rubbish tip. Once they were given a house around there they should have protested and turn it down. These pple know only too well why they choose to live in that area more so with the stench coming out from around the area.
Re: Beetham want war! Posted: 2009-10-16 09:12:00 AM
Oh and we suppose to accept the fact that, other responsible citizens who take pride in where they live, work hard and pay their taxes, should have to pay for the lazy ones, there is logic for you
Poor Judgement...and Ignorance Posted: 2009-10-16 08:47:00 AM
Just a bunch of ghetto trash showing how ignorant they are. You want to protect go infront of a police station or the Red House. Throwing rocks at cars just let people care less about what happens to anyone in that slum. There are to sides to those killings, and I don't believe either on. I'm sure the police killed them and lied about how, but how clean are the hands of those men...???
Good Citizenship Posted: 2009-10-16 10:24:00 AM
Why do the citizens of Trinidad in particular areas pratice bad citizenship? Then they cry that they are subject to the police brutality when they act out? Police officers, do as I do....inform bad citizens, as well as good citizens, that any action concieved as a threat to life or serious harm to anyone will be met with deadly force.
Beetham war Posted: 2009-10-16 08:57:00 AM
Amazing!!!!The express failed to report that some people were robbed in their vehicles on the highway during this "protest". The Beetham's reputation for being a criminal factory is long standing. Time to SANITIZE this hotspot for good!!!!. The innocent ones living there need to be placed on notice. Get out the way or get caught up.TNT Lover
EXCELLENT WAY TO DEAL WITH THINGS Posted: 2009-10-16 09:45:00 AM
VERY CIVILIZED!
Beetham people want war Posted: 2009-10-16 09:47:00 AM
If these hooligans want a war with the law enforcement agencies why not accomodate them. Its time to take the trash out anyways
Beetham Highway Posted: 2009-10-16 09:51:00 AM
The government should also put a wall along Beetham Highway so motorists can feel safe travelling especially at nights.
Why am I not surprised? Posted: 2009-10-16 10:31:00 AM
Unbelievable. How can you beg for sympathy on the news while throwing debris at the cars of those who have nothing to do with causing your particular situation? Get it together.
Beetham people want war Posted: 2009-10-16 08:08:00 AM
Beetham want war? Some of their people are already causing enough war in the rest of the country, through major holdups of businesses, and even private homes. This man came from the Beetham walking in my yard to thief 2 o' clock in the morning, with a bag and a flashlight. Then another day, in broad daylight another one came to rob my aged godmother, and had the nerve to say, don't worry, I only come to do my job (he meant he come to thief). Enough is enough, it is time for the military to support our esteemed police force, go up there and clean up that area once and for all. Residents of Beetham should not be living above the law of the land, by not allowing law officers to enforce the law in it's right, which is an insult to the rest of us law abiding citizens of the country. Kudos to the police force, keep up the good job, and whether you know it or not, a lot of citizens in this great nation today are supporting you all, because we are really fed up
War with decency Posted: 2009-10-16 12:09:00 AM
How about this: don't give criminals safehouses and stop engaging in criminal activity. I suppose not as its much better to engage in criminal behaviour, kill and injure others and then when the tables are turned play the victim. God why allyuh so PRIMITIVE, even animals don't behave this way.
beetham have good people to. Posted: 2009-10-16 11:13:00 AM
As a beetham resident we know our rights the police are bullies and have no respect for the good poeple in our community.
Re: beetham have good people to. Posted: 2009-10-16 09:15:00 AM
Ask yourself this question? Do you see this type of fiasco anywhere else in this country?
Re: beetham have good people to. Posted: 2009-10-16 1:17:00 PM
Good to hear from a Beetham resident. Now please go tell your people to stop coming to thief in my yard.I wake up 5 o'clock every morning, and work till almost 6 pm every workday for what I have
Re: beetham have good people to. Posted: 2009-10-16 2:47:00 PM
The police are not bullies, they are simply doing their job, through enforcing the law, against these so called "good people" who are harbouring criminals
beetham people want war Posted: 2009-10-16 07:22:00 AM
Police need to seriously clean up that area and deport these people. They are not Trinidadians. Send them back to haiti, st. vincent, dominica where they came from. They are just running down the country and giving Trinidad a bad name. GET THEM OUT TAKE BACK THE IDS THEY HAVE THAT THEY PAYT FOR BEACUSE THEY ARE NOT TRINIDADIANS.
Beetham people want war! Posted: 2009-10-16 07:55:00 AM
Of course they want war! Everyone knows that the people who lives in Beetham as low lives with no real job. They get mad when the police help them and they get mad when the police don't help them. They want their cake and eat it too! I think it is time for the police to step up and start protecting the innocent law abiding citizen and get rid of all the low lives in Beetham!
Take them out... Posted: 2009-10-16 10:04:00 AM
Pakistan made the mistake of having a "soft belly" towards the Jehadis and today they are bleeding big time. These rebellious little pockets protecting terrority and criminals must come under the perview of the police and army. They must be dealt with a force that render them useless.
AT WAR Posted: 2009-10-16 2:11:00 PM
This is whatwe get for 20/20 vision, criminals doing what they want when they want. Our beloved country will become like Haiti if we continue to support Patrick Manning.
matthew 4 33-37 Posted: 2009-10-16 2:20:00 PM
If you try to read all these comments, you have to wonder at the violence that is conveyed in them and you wonder if the 'Beetham' is a place or a state of mind. I am left to conclude that some of us who write these things are just lucky not to have to live there, or we would not be able to distinguish ourselves from 'them'. Besides killing them, burning them out, hiding them and planting trees and parks on their homes, what more intelligent and moral solutions are there?
beetham have good people too Posted: 2009-10-16 3:45:00 PM
I suggest to the person who wrote 'beetham have good people to' that is high time the good people stand up and rise against the criminal elements among them. Riot for education for your children, for training, for help to deal with the criminals among you, then people will not tarnish you with the same brush. Surely even you can see that this lawlessness cannot continue.
beetham people want war Posted: 2009-10-16 11:50:00 AM
the beetham needs to be burned down. it is not a healthy place for these residents, this is pure maddness. the people living there need physcological help because they are in bad shape mentally. they all have young children in this disgraceful place and children learn what they see.all they know of in this neighbourhood is violence, crime, sex and a labas full of garbage. how could these people stand this filth.
Too much Posted: 2009-10-16 3:59:00 PM
What madness is this?
beetham Posted: 2009-10-16 12:04:00 AM
it is very hard to sympathize with these people when they claim to be protesting, when the truth is that it was jus another opportunity fot them to parade on tv and rob innocent people trying to get home. and come on they expect us to believe that those two men that were killed were innocent. correct me if i am wrong, wasn.t the vehicle they were using stolen.??
Beetham protest Posted: 2009-10-16 4:07:00 PM
Look if the Beetham residents could mobilize in a positive way they would get better results.Organize protests on the Promenade against violence, no water, healthcare and other poor situations in your community instead of setting the stage to rob hard working people on their way home from work.Your generational suffering will not stop until you increase awareness about pro-active positive resolutions instead of re-active negative decisions.Come on Beetham people TIME FOR A CHANGE.MANNING DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU UNTIL IT IS ELECTION TIME.GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY AND LET GOOD SENSE PREVAIL.TNT Lover
