Gypsy eyes COP: If Panday wins I go

OPPOSITION Member of Parliament for Mayaro, Winston ’Gypsy’ Peters, says he is at the point of weighing his political options. And one option, if Basdeo Panday remains the political leader of the United National Congress (UNC), is the possibility of joining the Congress of the People (COP).

In a telephone interview with the Express yesterday, Peters said he will pursue whatever options are open to him if he decides to remain in the political arena.

’If he (Panday) puts himself up for the (internal) elections they want to have or say they having, and he wins, I will leave the UNC,’ Gypsy said.

’It is only until such time that a decision will be made in terms of my options. I have to see exactly how this is working and exactly what is happening, because the UNC did a lot for this country and I am UNC and I want us to work. But we cannot work with Mr Panday as the leader, he could take this party no further.’

Asked whether there have been any latest attempts at reconciliation between the dissident faction, which includes himself, Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner and Tabaquite MP Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, Peters said talk is always happening internally.

’We have to continue to talk, and reconciliation is always an option. As a matter of fact, it’s the best option but it has to be done in a certain way. Nobody can’t go and reconcile with Mr Panday to have a new leader or anything like that, it’s not going to work,’ he said.

’The kind of reconciliation which needs to happen is all of us getting together and telling Mr Panday he has to go, and reconciling with the people who have left the party and those on opposing sides, so we can win.’

Peters said he believes the people at the helm of the UNC do not want to embark upon an internal election process. He said the proposed plan to have it held in January may conflict with Local Government elections, and this may be used as an excuse to delay the party’s elections even further.

Asked whether there is a legal option which he and others could consider to force the party into holding elections, he said, ’I don’t know. That is for the legal minds to answer. But I think there should be a moral mind, because if these people had any morals they would know what should be done.

’But it’s not (being) done. They are making every effort for it not to be done so they could hold on to whatever they are holding on to. I don’t know what that is, but I would not be a part of it.’

Demoracy Posted: 2009-10-18 10:47:00 PM
Does he realize he is making a foolish statement? IF someone is nominated and wins an election, the he Gypsy will leave? What type of democracy is that? That is like saying 'it is my way or the highway'! Isn't that the same little boy mentality of the COP members who left the UNC? They LOST an internal election, so they left, and we know they lost national elections could not even win 1 seat. That is like saying we want a certain result and if we don't get it, everyone else is wrong. Nice example to set! We are watching and listening.. 3ini
Gypsy eyes COP Posted: 2009-10-18 7:39:00 PM
Gypsy should stay in the UNC, he does not have a true desire to represent the ideals of the COP. Joining COP is Gypsy's way of fighting Panday, he himself says he is a UNC. Why should the COP accept Gypey he does not represent their ideals, he brings a Parlamentry seat that has no benifit to the party.COP shpuld go foward with those who believe in what they stand for and not party jumpers who bring no loyalty but travell on vehicles of convinenc and will return to their party as soon as Panday has been disposed of. If they want to represent the COP let them vacate the seat they won under the UNC, and come and geniuenly fight under the Congress banner. Raymond Small.
If Panday Wins I Go Posted: 2009-10-18 10:21:00 PM
Mr. Gypsy whether Panday wins or not you must go. You have no choice in the matter. You're a member of Parliament because of Panday. Do you think that after biting the hand that fed you, after your term is up the UNC is going to offer you the chance to be elected again, or that UNC members will ever + vote for you? That's just wishful thinking. Calypso season isn't too far away, start composing because that's where your future lies, singing calypso. You couldn't even make it as a parent, look where your son ended up, How could you represent people. Led astray by power hungry people you now turn on the one who gave you a chance to uplift yourself. "Et Tu Brute?"
Oh please! Posted: 2009-10-18 11:59:00 PM
If Gypsy cannot work with Panday as leader then why did agree to be a UNC candidate in the 2007 election? He only figured out he can't work with Panday now? After over a decade of serving in the UNC under Panday's leadership both as PM and Leader of the Opposition?
GYPSY GOES ETC: Posted: 2009-10-18 11:18:00 PM
What are you waiting For? Man go with COP be4 you're sidelined or pushed. You all know what Panday plans are even though it's not spoken. Be brave and move on. We want Manning out and if all of you who are unhappy with Panday go with COP, No way in Hell can PNM win the next election. We've always been strong PNMmites, but we're not at all happy & realise under Manning is not thinking country and pple and in our opinion it's time he and his Yes men / women go. both are them Posted: 2009-10-19 07:56:00 AM
Both Basdeo Panday and Winston Dookeran are waste of time. They cannot even deliver a good speech on a political platform. Both of them should go or learn the art of good public speaking and good leadership qualities. They should pattern Obama if they want to reach places.
Go Panday Go! Posted: 2009-10-19 07:07:00 AM
Panday must go! Must go! Must go!
gypsy Posted: 2009-10-19 03:46:00 AM
The most common of people truely understands that Warner and Gypsy could never, never remain and be stable in one(1) political party. The truth of the matter is a most simple one.Warner is cursed to be a"jumping"Jack, jomping in with the COP and the PNM and jumping out of the UNC.Well,Gypsy boy, you are doomed to be on the prowl.Gypsies have no resting place. So it is your nature to keep moving.Despite this you should never, never damn the bridge that you and your ramjacking cohorts desperately needed to cross on Basdeo Panday back.
Are you making the right move Gypsy? Posted: 2009-10-19 07:53:00 AM
Why cannot Gypsy stay and support his leader? This move by Gypsy definitely shows there is no loyalty in the UNC. "You know they say too many cooks spoils the broth/soup." This exactly what is happening in UNC, too many people want to be leader. When or if Panday departs, I guess if Gypsy becomes the leader, then Warner and Maharaj will support him for a while and then turn against him. If he Gypsy joins COP, he stay for a while like Warner, then turn against its leader Winston. If COP joins with UNC, and Panday is not with UNC, I wonder who will be leader Dookeran, Gypsy, Maharaj or Warner? The next thing is, will these men at the helm of UNC able to win an election? When PNM was thinking of replacing Manning, it turns out he won the elections for PNM. The PNM members stayed and worked with Manning to produce a win.
Gypsy eyes COP: ... Posted: 2009-10-19 09:40:00 AM
Yes Gypsy, I support you all the way. Indeed, whether or not Panday wins you should join COP. Why? You are right. These people at the helm of the UNC have no morals. Period. Trinidad can and will go no where with Politics of Convenience.
Panday Posted: 2009-10-19 08:17:00 AM
What's wrong with the executive and the members? Why can't they throw him out if he does not want to leave? They shoud be putting the country first.
My family andI are UNC supporters but if Panday remains the leader we will suooprt the COP. Posted: 2009-10-19 08:24:00 AM
With Panday being the leader, the UNC do not stand a chance of even being the opposition if an election is called, so there is sense in supporting a dieing party and its all because of Panday.
The COP took a big chunk and now Ramjack will be taking a big chunk. Posted: 2009-10-19 08:29:00 AM
When would the remaining supports of Panday understand that Panday is Manning boy. Without Panday, Manning has a big fight but once Panday keep fighting to remain the leader of the UNC, the votes will be split and Manning will continue to be king.
Gypsy, the voice of the people should prevail. Posted: 2009-10-19 05:02:00 AM
Gypsy, are you saying that if the democracy of the party runs it natural course and the majority of members within the party, elects Mr. Panday as their leader you are considering to leave the party? Wouldn't it be politically and morally correct for you to be guided by the voice of the people and more so, when it comes to internal matters of the party, by the membership of the party? Why is it that you have chosen to listen to those outside the UNC rather than those within your party?
Elections Posted: 2009-10-19 06:51:00 AM
Gypsy, Why don't you all come out and say why you all do not want Panday as Leader of UNC and who should be his replacement. Change have to take place...You all still fighting 60's and 70's election.
Democracy Gypsy Style Posted: 2009-10-19 12:07:00 AM
True to his name, Gypsy, if he does not get what he wants he moves just like a Gypsy. To hell with the fact that the democratic will of the people will be twarted. After all I would still ahve my parliamentary seat. No GYPSY, the headline should read Gypsy to resign seat if Pandey wins. Show your "testicular fortitude" show some leadership and principle. Cantrini
Gypsy Posted: 2009-10-19 12:30:00 AM
Gypsy...you have no political base. If you want to go go.....dont wait. I wonder if COP would want a person like yourself there anyway
Re: Gypsy Posted: 2009-10-19 1:07:00 PM
The issue is not 'political base'. The main issue re the UNC in T&T is having Bas Panday at the helm. The country is clamoring for Bas to go, in order for the country to move ahead. His stubborness is holding back the country and giving more power to his friend Patrick Manning.
Re: Gypsy Posted: 2009-10-19 3:11:00 PM
Or maybe he can cross the floor and make the PNM stronger, because the PNM will win the next general election by a much broader margin - Canada
go gypsy Posted: 2009-10-19 10:15:00 AM
gypsy go and take jack and ramesh with you . You are all betrayers the man that picked you all to go up now allure want him gone . BETRAYERS OF THE HIGHEST LEVEL .
Stop fooling yourself Posted: 2009-10-19 3:47:00 PM
You're only fooling yourself, Gypsy. The hardcore UNC supporters will NEVER vote for someone of your ethni...sorry..ra...ummm, sorry, colo..no..ahmm..nature. Yes. They will never vote for someone of your nature. Please leave where you are not wanted.
Think Gypsy Posted: 2009-10-19 4:18:00 PM
Gypsy has the right and prerogative to do as he please, but because of one person (Basdeo Panday) he plans to leave for another party. What would happen if he does not agree with the leadership of COP? Would he leave? We all may not agree with the leadership of a particular, but to leave because of teh stubbornness and foolishness of one person should not deter him from accomplishing his vision and mission of helping the UNC. Personally, I think the UNC need to be more inclusive of blacks in order for them to be taken seriously.
Gypsy eyes COP Posted: 2009-10-19 4:21:00 PM
It's time for Panday to retire. He had his time. Let someone else take the rains. Change is coming, it's time for change.
