MERE inches away from the edge of an eroding roadway, drivers cautiously made their way along the Barrackpore main road yesterday.
Some others chose to find alternative routes.
The driver of a container truck was one who abandoned his plan to pass along Papourie Road, School Hill, Barrackpore. He said it was too dangerous and he believed the truck would overturn.
The residents yesterday protested the condition of the road which, they said, was caused by a leaking water main. They said the constant flow of water was also damaging their property.
’This has been happening for three or four years now,’ resident Bobby Chatoorie said.
On Monday night, he said, a burst main worsened the situation.
’In front my house there is a four-foot-deep hole’ Chatoorie said.
Three houses have already been lost to the undermined land, residents said.
Hours after the protest, personnel from the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) were on site repairing the leak.
WASA’s General Manager, Corporate Communications, Ellen Lewis said yesterday the residents’ concerns will be further probed.
’We will investigate any claim of the residents with respect to damage to property as a consequence of a leaking WASA pipeline,’ she said.
