Landslide woes in Barrackpore
'3 homes lost...'

SLIPPING AWAY: The landslide believed to have been caused by a leaking water main that has destroyed three homes and damaged several others at St Croix Road, which links Princes Town to Barrackpore. - Photo: DAVE PERSAD

MERE inches away from the edge of an eroding roadway, drivers cautiously made their way along the Barrackpore main road yesterday.

Some others chose to find alternative routes.

The driver of a container truck was one who abandoned his plan to pass along Papourie Road, School Hill, Barrackpore. He said it was too dangerous and he believed the truck would overturn.

The residents yesterday protested the condition of the road which, they said, was caused by a leaking water main. They said the constant flow of water was also damaging their property.

’This has been happening for three or four years now,’ resident Bobby Chatoorie said.

On Monday night, he said, a burst main worsened the situation.

’In front my house there is a four-foot-deep hole’ Chatoorie said.

Three houses have already been lost to the undermined land, residents said.

Hours after the protest, personnel from the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) were on site repairing the leak.

WASA’s General Manager, Corporate Communications, Ellen Lewis said yesterday the residents’ concerns will be further probed.

’We will investigate any claim of the residents with respect to damage to property as a consequence of a leaking WASA pipeline,’ she said.

I used to be a reside in Barrackpore and this problem has been going on for years now!! Wasa is always digging the roads but if proper measures were taken then this could've been avoided! The picture displayed shows it being better than it was when I was there in August! The authorities just need to do their job the proper way than always have a recurring problem! Find a solution!
