...Bas: They can leave if they want to, right now

Saying that he would not be blackmailed by anyone, UNC leader Basdeo Panday yesterday told all those members who were threatening to join another party if he contested the internal elections, to ’do us a favour, (and) go now’.

Mayaro MP Winston ’Gypsy’ Peters has stated that he would join the Congress of the People if Panday is returned as leader.

But addressing delegates at the National Congress at the Rienzi Complex, Couva, Panday was unfazed by such threats.

’The party must not become a haven for ’international con-men or an avenue for money laundering, nor must it be a vehicle for those who have made it a career of betraying this party to its opponents’, the UNC leader said, provoking thunderous applause.

But Panday also discussed constitution reform and proposed a Presidential system in which none of the members of the Cabinet would be members of the Parliament.

Panday said the Constitution must be radically reformed. He called for an elected President based on one-man-one-vote.

’The President, who shall be the Head of State and the Head of the Government, must then be free to select his Cabinet from the most capable men and women in the country as his Ministers and his advisers, who together with the President will constitute the Executive. They will not be members of the Parliament,’ he said, adding: ’That is vitally important’.

Panday said that Trinidad and Tobago was too small to have a bi-cameral Parliament of two houses. He proposed a uni-cameral Parliament made up of about 90 to 100 members who are elected on the basis of proportional representation. Panday said the new constitution must also provide for the right of recall of members who are not performing.

He is pushing people who do not have his point of view away and still talking unity. UNC supporters are saying hjer should leave - and they did not join COP, ramjack or anybody else. The enemy is not Ramjack or COP, it is the man in the mirror
He go mash de party if he cyar be de leader. Posted: 2009-10-26 04:01:00 AM
He calls himself a leader and as an ex-union man he now encourages 'dissidents' to leave. Mr Panday it is time you follow your own advice.
Panday must go Posted: 2009-10-26 04:52:00 AM
Mr. Panday, has in the past, admitted as to his political unattractiveness! What has changed today? Now he is obsolete to today's political climate and has no political appeal. Please step down and let sensible opposition prevail.
Stop being a dictator... Posted: 2009-10-26 06:03:00 AM
Mr. Panday, it is time for you to sit on the rocking chair on your porch and reminisce about the good old days. We need new leadership in T&T and it ain't going to happen if you choose to hang on by the thread of your coat tail.
New Constitution Posted: 2009-10-26 06:43:00 AM
I agree with Mr. Panday on the issue of the recall of a Parliamentarian in a new constitution for not performing. It's a pity though that that was not part of the constitution now. If it was, then Mr. Panday would most certainly be recalled. He's certainly not performing his duties as an effective MP or as opposition leader. Ric, Brooklyn, NY
Leave Now Posted: 2009-10-26 03:39:00 AM
Yes! Time to leave everyone of these politicians have no new and fresh ideas. We need a new "Political Party" to clean up Trinidad and Tobago. Stop the drama and address the issues of the hospitals, crime and drugs. Help the forgotten people who do not enjoy running water and don't know when they will eat the next meal. I am speaking about places in deep Moruga. Come on give us a break and stop all this drama.
Bas Etc Posted: 2009-10-26 07:20:00 AM
This is not the way for a past PM to behave. You're on the world stage and should be seen as a man with Finesse and Class instead of behaving the way you do. We do'nt want you as our PM it's embarrassing. Concerned Pple
Mr. Panday Please Posted: 2009-10-26 08:08:00 AM
Talk about riding it till the wheels fall off. You don't care about the party or the country, only the political spotlight, otherwise you would "take one for the team" step down and give your party the best chance at being elected.
One man, one vote Posted: 2009-10-26 08:33:00 AM
Bas has said one thing that I agree - simpley becasuse I've been saying it for years... Let the entire electorate vote for one man who then chooses the most competent people from society (and who usually are not involved in petty party politics in the first place) to be in his Cabinet, but vetted by the legislature elected by the people. The legislature and the executive should NEVER be the same - that's the key to all our problems
From all to none Posted: 2009-10-26 06:18:00 AM
Panday is proposing a system in which none of the members of the Cabinet would be members of the Parliament. He was the first PM to give all of his MPs cabinet posts. Now he is saying that none of them should have cabinet appointments. He will say one thing when he in opposition and do the reverse when if he gets into government.
Me. Panday -- It's your call Posted: 2009-10-26 12:55:00 AM
Over the years, there are a few amongst us who have done a tremendous job of making Mr. Panday the cause of all "evil" in TnT. Perhaps we have forgotten that it was Mr. Panday who took on the powers at be and won some kind of respectability for the working class. Now some "well intentioned" citizens want to assume power by "forcing" him out. Even the Gods must think that they are crazy. Mr. Panday is absolutely right in saying that these persons can leave... let them face the voting public...What have they done to help allieviate the problems of the citizens - they "flip-floppers" convienientkly using the UNC-A to have a voice. Let's see how many of them will win their seats. Past elections results shows the loyalty to Mr. Panday. MR. Panday, sir, you have every right to carry on as long as you wish...
panday must go. Posted: 2009-10-26 09:34:00 AM
