15 guns stolen
Security firm breached

A MASSIVE search was launched last night to recover 15 loaded guns which were stolen from a Woodbrook security company by two men, one pretending to be a police officer.

Roadblocks were set up as far as Chaguanas and other areas throughout the country within 60 minutes after the robbery as the police fear the distribution of the cache of weapons into the hands of criminals could prove to be a major stumbling block in their war against crime.

Police said, at around 3.15 p.m., the two men entered the MI 5 security firm at 40 Alfredo Street. The man dressed as the police officer told a female security guard on duty that he came to ’drop off something’, and needed to get behind the counter.

The lone security officer, whose name was not released by police, and who was in the building at the time, had no problem letting the ’police officer’ inside, and never asked for identification, investigators said.

She had seen him speaking with the other man just minutes before, through the surveillance camera positioned on the outside of the building, and believed that he was genuinely a police officer.

When she opened the door, and allowed the ’officer’ behind the counter, it was then that he pulled out a gun, placed it to her head and announced a hold-up, police said.

He struck her to the mouth with the butt of the gun, knocking out a tooth, before forcing her onto the ground and duct-taping both her feet and hands, investigators added.

Both men then proceeded to open the metal box which contained the firearms.

In all, 13 nine millimetre pistols, one .357 handgun and a shotgun were taken. They were all fully loaded, police said. The men then escaped in a waiting car, police said.

Officers from the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF) responded shortly after. Woodbrook police viewed the surveillance tape, but could not clearly recognise the faces of the robbers, one officer said.

All attempts to contact Acting Police Commissioner James Philbert for comment last night proved futile. Woodbrook police are continuing investigations into the robbery.

B.O.L.O. Public viewing on nationall TV is a must. Posted: 2009-10-25 7:20:00 PM
Air the tapes on public TV and open a special telephone hot line. Even if the Police investigators cannot recognize the culprits, give the public a chance as well, after all they are the ones that usually end up paying for mistakes like these. I never knew Trinidad and Tobago declared war on crime. When did this war start and who is winning? Lloyd C. Johnson, US Army Retired, Germany

15 guns stolen? Posted: 2009-10-25 11:41:00 PM
Perhaps just another scam to release guns into the community. Why were these weapons fully loaded? Why do security firms need "the most powerful weapons in the world?" and they are supervised by one woman guard on duty, and she recognizes the former employee? This is ridiculous. Whatever happened to checking whether a ackage was exopected? suppose it was an explosive device they were beringing in? thee hbve ben too many cases of people being tied up, then freeing themselves. My suspicion is that this firm is selling guns. My father was a gun owner, and he was required to keep his gun securely locked up, with the key aay from the gun cabinet. The police used to come to check the safety of his cabinet, before renewing his license. They came and took the gun away oon the day he died. this was in Arima,in 1971. What happened since then? firms can keep loaded guns in a drawe under a desk? This is ridiculous. Real security would have had a picture of the two as they entered the premises on camera. If these people ere in charge of my security, I would cancel their contract. This is a sick joke.
On track for 500 murders. Posted: 2009-10-26 02:00:00 AM
Fifteen guns in circulation, well this could prove interesting. I had heard of corrupt police officer's renting uniforms before, I suspect this is the case here also. On the other brighter side of the coin this could be a sign that the availability of weapons in criminal circles WAS reduced, maybe by the recent police activity in eastern POS. All I can say is that it's gong to be a violent conclusion to the year, that figure of five-hundred will most likely be achieved now. The Police really need to step-up now.
metal box? Posted: 2009-10-26 00:52:00 AM
Might try a safe and some better camera equipment
15 guns stolen Posted: 2009-10-26 01:44:00 AM
Lord there seems to be no hope for this country. Now they sure to reach that 500 mark by December 31st. How stupid of that security firm to have those guns so accessible. And to have a female security guard working behind a desk alone and surveillance cameras that don't even work right. What is going on? She didn't even ask for ID! Cant you see these criminals intend to keep on killing. They now have 15 more loaded weapons in their possession. They are planning something "big". Could be bank robberies, CHOGM, the Treasury. Something huge and horrible.Police officers interrogate everyone who was employed and is still working for that so called security agency. I'll be praying that the police recover these guns.Pleae get the Army, Coast Guard, citizens, everybody to fight this war against crime. God help Trinidad and Tobago.
In an imboglio of ignorance. Posted: 2009-10-26 04:01:00 AM
How much does it cost to securitise T&T per capita? The amount should include the police, the army, the coast guard, SAUTT, all private security firms and barricaded homes. Forget it, Mr Security Minister, you do not know!
15 guns stolen Posted: 2009-10-26 03:31:00 AM
Whether 1 gun or 15 guns, that shows how witty the criminals are in T&T, that is if you can believe the story that they were stolen. I would more believe that they were sold. As usual, there will be no repercusions for this criminal act, regardless of who is responsible. What a corrupt society.
armed arms robbery Posted: 2009-10-26 01:01:00 AM
so, who is going to be held accountable here??? why were the gus loaded??? why is only one person on the compound with this kind of responsibility??? this is just another example of the half-assed way we do things in trinidad & tobago until things go horribly wrong...
Sounds like an army job... Posted: 2009-10-26 05:06:00 AM
Trinis know that there are crooks in the military who have access to police uniform etc. They are the only ones who are capable of conducting such an operation. Investigate the military first find out who was where at what time....
what's new about these types of crimes in this country? Posted: 2009-10-26 05:17:00 AM
it's amazing how under the security system in trinidad that it's so easy to commit a crime and get away with it.
Guns stolen Posted: 2009-10-26 06:56:00 AM
Why wasn't the metal box secured in a security firm? Why can't the surveillance tape show clearly?

15 Guns stolen Posted: 2009-10-26 02:20:00 AM
Let's all face the fact that it is possible that the perpetrator might indeed have been a police officer, given the alarming rise in the number of officers turning rogue by being involved in crime and corruption. Want to bet that these guns will never be recovered?
Loosing ground/stumbling block Posted: 2009-10-26 02:50:00 AM
By now we shouldn't have any more blocks or ground to loose. This is just another example of how TnT in general is lacking decipline, both in the private security sector farless the Judicial security sector. Ill trained, lack of decipline, ill equiped security in TnT. Those big belly police who patrol or those indeciplined guards at the hospital is the same thing. Society is very indeciplined and has no leaders. But we go fete better than we can fight-crime.
Guns missing? Posted: 2009-10-26 03:04:00 AM
Only in Trinidad, this country is really a comedy show except the audience is not laughing they more in fear.Soon we are going to have groups with names that terrorise citizens just like the middle east.Manning keep up the great job you are diong and next election will be victorious because the power hungry opposition cant get it together, sorry tnt.rbny.
15 GUNS STOLEN, WOW! Posted: 2009-10-26 08:32:00 AM

15 Guns stolen Posted: 2009-10-26 07:21:00 AM
TV6 indicated that tapes from the survelliance camera are being reviewed. I laughing yes., everyone knows all the cameras installed for the SOTA don't work. You're fooling no one.
Security Posted: 2009-10-26 04:21:00 AM
If you or your business is "protected" by this company, then I suggest you fire them.
survelence camera Posted: 2009-10-26 08:09:00 AM
i believe most criminals knows how to hide their faces from the camera, with wearing hats etc. cameras should be positioned to face ppl entering a building to get a clear head shot.
What a joke .... NOT Posted: 2009-10-26 05:01:00 AM
As funny as that may sound in terms of the ease these criminals are committing their crime, in reality this is VERY serious. Not only are there 15 more guns available to these criminals, but now the integrity of the police (as shattered as it may be) has now been compromised even further, as people now will even more not trust the police for fear it may be a bandit in disguise. GET RID of Philbert. GET RID of Mr. Martin (or whom I call the Waste of Time Minister). Spend our tax dollars on good policing and policing tools and technologies that ACTUALLY work. All in all GET RID of this PNM government. PNM ... People No Matter.

Fifteen Guns Stolen Posted: 2009-10-26 09:31:00 AM
I'm sorry for the female security who got hit in the mouth but lucky to be alive. Now that is some weak security. The security management need to do over their S.O.P. because a place like that which I believe was thier HQ should of at three or more security and ID check is a must police or not weak security management. Criminals have 15 more guns commit crime.
Approval from Asst COP Posted: 2009-10-26 09:35:00 AM
Will these thieves have to apply for licensce for these guns? I hope they are more successful than the businessmen who applied and turned down.
Guns Stolen. Posted: 2009-10-26 11:31:00 AM
when do Security companies load guns and keep in storage?why is the ammunition not kept seperately so that inventory can be kept? This situation needs to be investigated thorougly.Tnt lets hope that the company had serial numbers on these guns. This is a very fishy robbery.-confused-
15 guns stolen Posted: 2009-10-26 10:04:00 AM
This a very sad situation. You must always ID people especially if they are sayiny that they are police officers. I hope that the "real" police continue their search for stolen guns and I hope the security officer can get through this situation okay.
Remind me of what national scurity purpose do the installed surveillance camers serve Posted: 2009-10-26 06:36:00 AM
I have a question for the authorities...isn't this where we use the resources, the surveillance cameras that were recently set up so that they could identify and track the vehicle involved within a relatively short time of the incident and narrow down the escape route so that they could better direct other resources in the interdiction process. The multiple road blocks set up 60 minutes after the incident suggests that the police are clueless. Heaven help us innocent citizens
Lax security Posted: 2009-10-26 10:14:00 AM
Why was there only one guard on duty ? No one, including a "police" officer should have been allowed access of to the location where guns were stored. Also, it is time for all police officers in T&T to have badges like in the United States, as well as display picture ID cards on their person. The use of holograms (which are difficult to implement without highly specialized equipment) on the ID cards will also help to prevent fakes being made. Both of these forms of identification will help to reduce incidents of police impersonation. The old British habit of identifying police only by the uniform worn is antiquated and insufficient.

The Lawlessness Continues Posted: 2009-10-26 3:06:00 PM
Well yes...Well just when I thought we had reached where we are going...we going even further..I think it was a policeman and I think these guns are going to be rented...why sell? when you can rent them over and over again.. Trini in Brooklyn watching the chaos from afar
15 Guns stolen Posted: 2009-10-26 10:14:00 AM
I love my country its true but I don't think I want to read the papers for the rest of this year. Not with 15 more guns in criminals hands. This was an inside job.I keep wondering did they steal the guns to sell them or is it to use them. In either case somebody had a need for them and what else do you do with guns but kill people. That Security Company should lose their license. And its almost as if they set up that female guard. She was the only one behind the desk knowing that the guns were loaded and easily available.
Beyond the obvious, why... Posted: 2009-10-26 3:31:00 PM
a)Were these guns stored loaded; they should be stored seperatly from the bullets; b)Not locked up in either a safe or in a locked and barricaded gun rack; c)are Police officers or anyone else allowed behind the counter to "drop something" - they couldn't leave it in front?; d) did the security officer not question the validity of the drop off, or if her Supervisor or company owner knew anything about it. Does this company provide adequate training particularly about such a thing as standing or post orders? If there was to be an authorized drop-off, the person organizing it should have left a notation in the shift log. No note, no knowledge, no drop off. 3) Was the guard left alone with no backup in an office where guns are stored? Someone impersonating a police officer could offer I.D. that looks valid enough to fool anyone but basic precautions would be enough to throw up quite a few roadblocks in getting to the guns. Seems to me sometimes that anyone can set up a company, buy a few guns legitimately, hire a few warm bodies and voila...you have a new security guard company. Is there certification required or mandated training for these guards? 1st World country? Not in a million years at this rate... WayneD Toronto, ON
