PM changes mind; interested in president job

PM TOURS: Prime Minister Patrick Manning kisses a young supporter during a walkabout yesterday through the streets of Pleasantville in his San Fernando East constituency. -Photo: TREVOR HACKETT

Two days after Prime Minister Patrick Manning announced in Tobago that he had no desire to become the nation’s executive president, as proposed in the draft constitution, he has made an about turn by indicating ’if the people want me, I will be prepared to serve’.

Manning told party supporters at a political meeting that the position held no special interest for him, but there are many people who feel that the reason why an executive president is in the draft constitution is because he ( Manning) wants to be the first executive president.

’If the electorate wants me I will accept, that is if I am around.’ he said during a tour of his San Fernando East constituency yesterday.

He pointed out that in order to pass the necessary legislation to effect the constitutional changes ’we will need a special majority which we do not have now, and in any event it is unlikely that those now serving will benefit from the changes. Those who come after will be the beneficiary,’ Manning said.

He pointed out that the proposals are not for the benefit of himself.

’We make them because we feel that at the end of the day it will lead to a better structure of governance,’ he said.

Manning was on a walkabout in his constituency, when he spoke to the media on a wide range of topics including local government elections. He said local government elections will be held early next year and there will be no postponement of the elections.

The elections have been postponed on three separate occasions to allow for new legislation seeking to reform the process of local government governance get approval.

’Legislation for changes in the local government structure is now before a select committee of Parliament and a report is expected at the end of October.

’Then we will call the elections on time before the expiration of July 13, which is the deadline.’

Manning said he expects to return to Cuba for a medical check-up before the meeting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government scheduled for November 27-29.

’ I should have gone before but I kept postponing it,’ Manning said. Manning underwent surgery last December to remove a cancerous kidney in Cuba.

Manning was accompanied by an unusual number of armed security officers as he walked through Pleasantville.

Asked what is the reason for such tight security he said, ’Security arrangements have been stepped up for the Prime Minister because there are a lot of opposition forces out there.’

Manning expected to continue his walkabout today in another part of his constituency.

His arrogance shows. Posted: 2009-10-27 06:50:00 AM
Oh, no! He did not change his mind: he always wanted to be President. What he changed was his word. By the time his present tour ends, his 'working paper' will become THE 'draft constitution'.
Nobody should be surprised Posted: 2009-10-27 03:26:00 AM
I don't think anyone should be surprised at this sudden public change of heart. Oh pleaseee! As for this Cuba thing for medical check-ups, dress it however you want, it is as clear as day that even our PM has absolutely no faith in our own local medical system. Duhhhh?

The real Mr Patrick Manning just came forward and his Tobago statement about "not interested" in the Executive Presidency was just a Brear Rabbit ploy..Mr Patrick Manning is a "control freak", and the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago must recognize his strange behaviour and deal with it accordingly whenever they are granted an opportunity to exercise their constitutional rights by participating in the electorate process..After witnessing Mr Manning's performance as he stands with UdeCOTT and his slam dunking of Dr Rowley who has steadfastedly opposed the goodly Prime Minister I cannot comprehend why the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago will place such overwhelming power in the hands of Mr Patrick Manning.

More and more we are starting to feel like we are entering a Jim Jones era, where the father is calling all the shots, and we are following along like mindless fools, surrendering our civil rights...

Leadership was handed to this man by a few loyal voters, who, I am sure are regretful by now. Those sycophants awoke but know not what to do to remove this menace called Manning. People of T&T, have patience. Vote wisely next time.

PM changes mind Posted: 2009-10-27 07:36:00 AM
Listen Mr.Prime Minister, just because we are not quite sure what we are drinking in your tap water these days, does not mean that our minds are still not clear enough, to see your transparent ulterior motives
PM changes mind Posted: 2009-10-27 12:54:00 AM
Well, since the murder rate will probably hit 500 by 2009 year end, swine flu may be as popular as the common cold, and most of our cars would be wrecked from numerous potholes on the road, (although god gave us the pitch lake), some of our children will be sitting under the roofs of unstable structures, in some schools going unnoticed, reasonable affordability of food is beyond the reach of many, many families, to name a few. The PNM government once again in their infinite wisdom, see necessary to create more chaos in the country. Point here is, there are much more critical problems that needs attention in the country right now, the Prime Minister's claim to fame could come a little later, it is not like anybody can remove him from there in a hurry anyway
PM changes mind Posted: 2009-10-27 12:03:00 AM
Lets see, with all the talk about reform and Vision 2020, I decided to do a checklist to see how we're doing: Cost of living through the roof - check Rampant crime with no end in sight - check No transparency in governmental issues - check Overt effort to subvert the judicial process (did someone say UDECOTT?) - check Rampant corruption in government - check Complete disregard for the safety, wishes and well being of the general populace - check Crumbling infrastructure - check Gross incompetence - check A Prime Minister who wants to re-write the constitution giving him more executive powers thereby making him untouchable - check A Prime Minister who does not go anywhere without a security detail large enough to overthrow a small country - check Well folks, seems like we're well on our way to achieving the goals of Vision 20...oh wait, sorry - this was my checklist for DICTATORSHIP.

lol Mr. Manning is so childish..."If the people want me"...why don't you stop hiding behind your misleading words? Just tell the people what you want so we can all sing in unity a resounding "NO!!!"
