SWRHA worker tests positive for swine flu

AN employee at the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) has tested positive for the Influenza A/H1N1 virus or swine flu.

Yesterday, the Finance Department at the SWRHA’s head office at Lewis Street, San Fernando, was closed. Two other employees also showed symptoms of having the virus, the Express was told.

All employees from that department were told to remain at home while the building was sanitised yesterday.

Other departments recorded low attendance, with those who did report for work complaining that they were at risk too, and should have been warned to remain at home.

Medical facilities are being swamped with people wanting to be tested for the disease, health officials said yesterday.

Meanwhile, at the Chaguanas Health Centre, several people stood under tents, braving yesterday’s rainfall as they waited to be tested. Several children and babies were also at the facility.

Security was also increased.

One official said there was only one doctor on hand and this caused the long lines.

And there were more reports of swine flu being reported at schools. Students from a Couva secondary school and Chaguanas primary school were seen leaving the compound early after suspected cases of swine flu.

Elton Wickham and Rory Subiah, of the Communications Department of the Ministry of Education, could not be reached to confirm these alleged new cases.

General secretary of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association (TTUTA) Peter Wilson said the organisation will be liasing with the Ministries of Education and Health to determine whether schools will remain open in light of the several cases that have been seen at schools.

Swine Flu Vaccine Posted: 2009-10-28 7:52:00 PM
I have not read or seen anything about the people in T&T getting the H1N1 vaccination, did the government order any vaccination to protect the population? After all many people died in Mexico earlier in the year. I think the people have a choice to get the vaccination.
It continues... Posted: 2009-10-29 02:07:00 AM
Didn't the govt say the virus wasn't a concern? Think again...
Boo Hoo Swine Flu Posted: 2009-10-29 08:05:00 AM
Listen, I live and work in London and just about everyone had it including me. It's really the mildest flu I ever had and not even as bad as the common flu. My colleagues said the same!! There is no way of containing it, it’s like the common flu and everyone will get it. It just got a scary name SWINE FLY oink oink!! As normal the people as risk are those who already have some underlying illness or the elderly. Just sanitise a lot and go to work, or do like they do in Thailand wear that mask over your face.
Disclosure of Relevant Information Posted: 2009-10-29 06:30:00 AM
I am currently enrolled for classes with a student who works at the SWRHA, Finance Department. The names of the affected people should be disclosed to allow persons who came into contact with them to be more alert for symptoms. Names are not disclosed but yet everyone knows when the person has passes away !!!!!!!! It is Swine flu, not an STD!
HIDING THE TRUTH Posted: 2009-10-29 11:49:00 AM
NO person in authority is doing anything to aleviate the fears of the nation, with respect to the A H1 N1 situation. Why? I guess it doesn't exist! We the people of Trinidad and Tobago are crazy..we think there was a rise in crime when there wasn't. We thought there was a dengue outbreak but there was none (those silly persons who died of dengue were not told that it doesn't exist here!). And now we think there is need for concern for the AH1N1 when there clearly isn't (according to the 'brilliant' Patrick Manningitis), which doesn't exist either! WHEN ARE WE GOING TO PUT AN END TO THIS FOOLISHNESS!
Flu Pandemic Posted: 2009-10-29 1:59:00 PM
Prevention is better than cure! Stay away from sick people and stay home if you suspect you might have the cold or flu. Where else would you most expect to catch the H1N1/A influenza virus than around a bunch of sick people in a medical clinic? Be sensible. Sanitize! And do not rely on a Tamiflu vaccination when the supply is unreliable and there is always the possibility of contamination and the compromising of vulnerable immune systems.

It is the reverse here in the U.S. The majority of the public coming down with the disease is children.
