Hunt: National flag at stadium priceless

Sport Minister Gary Hunt does not know how much the large flag at the Hasely Crawford Stadium cost the Government. But he believes that one cannot put a price on national pride.

Hunt was responding to a report that the flag cost $2 million during yesterday’s post-Cabinet media conference at the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann’s.

He said he was sure that the price (whatever it was) was ’nothing out of the ordinary’ when one considered international best practices and prices. He noted that the flag is 30 feet and took considerable engineering to plant at that height.

’There was a lot of work that had to be done at the foundation level,’ he said, adding that the Government was proud to erect such a symbol of national pride.

But Mr Gary Hunt if you don't know you don't know. Period. How can you then say you are sure that the price (whatever it was) is "nothing out of the ordinary"?

Do you kmow that the minister nopt opnly knows the cost of the National flag but a lot of national issues like the Brian Lara stadium cost.I wonder if he knows the salary he gets. Shame on you Hunte (Gobin Toronto)
All in the eyes of the beholder. Posted: 2009-10-30 03:35:00 AM
To a PNM politician in the midst of a spending frenzy, two million dollars plus, is a drop in the bucket. For many, this particular flag is not a source of national pride. Rather this over size, overpriced object is a symbol of the wanton and obscene misuse of public funds. Let it fly high, to remind all, of the indulgences of fools with unlimited funds.
Flag....What Flag!!!??? Posted: 2009-10-29 11:57:00 PM
Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like Mr. Hunt to find enough Trinidadians to fill that stadium, of their own volition, who are proud of Trinidad and Tobago right now! I think it is ridiculous to spend such exhorbitant prices on a flag in these recessionary times! Nobody seems to care about the quality of life of our people, just how big and impressive things look! Certant Omnes!
priceless???? Posted: 2009-10-30 04:10:00 AM
Is the Minister of Sport for real? The people of TnT would much rather an investment of 2 million in social services ... so they could have national pride AND good health, education, etc. But .....How insulting is it to say we would not mind the price because this is a symbol of national pride? STEUPS That is a blatant disregard for our MONEY invested in a flag. Trinbagonians rise up
Hunte National Flag Etc Posted: 2009-10-30 05:42:00 AM
Are you telling the Nation the cost of the Flag is $2 Million? You cannot be serious!!Pple cannot buy food,No water flowing from our taps,When rain falls flooding almost every where,No drugs or hospital beds, pple sleeping along corridors floors, crime the worst in years and you're telling not only the Nation but the world our National Flag cost Millions. You and your gov't just wasting our money and having a laugh. This Gov't under Manning watch has to be rid of. They have done nothing for our pple but waste!waste!and con't to do so. No respect whatsoever for us. OAP'S
what a joke Posted: 2009-10-30 04:24:00 AM
The Prime Minister really knew who he was choosing when he selected people to be Cabinet Ministers.Mr Gary Hunt has shown in the past total disregard for the peoples concern.Remember the World Cup ticket fiasco. We as a people however continue to allow these arrogant, haughty, egotistcal ministers to continue to waste our money with impunity.
flag madness Posted: 2009-10-30 01:22:00 AM
Hope Mr.Hunt can tell a mother and her children, Pride comes before food on a table. This Gov't has no value for money and continues to show ways to spend OUR money.
Not a good response Posted: 2009-10-30 05:29:00 AM
Mr. Minister, unless you are paying for that flag out of your own pocket, you have a duty to tell the citizens of this country how their tax-paying dollars are being spent.
Another inept comment Posted: 2009-10-30 05:32:00 AM
While I agree that you cannot put a price on national pride, this is yet another example of the type of officials we have put in place to run our country. Mr Hunt is the Sports Minister and should know about the issues specific to this area. To make a statement like he doesn't know how much something (that alledgedly costs $2m) cost in his Ministry, then what are we paying him for? When will be the day when we will have accountable, suitable and knowledgeable officials at the helm of our beloved country?
National Flag Posted: 2009-10-30 07:33:00 AM
I agree with Minister Hunt that this was a high level piece of work. Could one imagine how many hours of engineering and cloth and even wind to blow it. You have to pay the minister for the hot air he blowing too. So $2 or $3 million is not a high price for national pride. Speaking of National Pride, what about the cricketers who went to India and exhibited 'national pride'. Each could be given a $500,000 national flag too. Money's no object.
Hunt a puppet! Posted: 2009-10-30 07:59:00 AM
Minister Hunt never knows anything, he doesn't know the cost of the Brian Lara Stadium, he doesn't know the completion date for the Brian Lara Stadium, and now this!! Minister hunt to me is just a puppet if he doesn't know about things his ministry have responsibility for, someone else is calling the shots in the Ministry of Sports!!
National Flag at Stadium Posted: 2009-10-30 06:56:00 AM
Nice going Mr.Minister! Tell them! It could be one million, two million or even three million! There is no recession in sweet T&T so why worry?ttforeigner
National Pride Posted: 2009-10-30 06:57:00 AM
Well...well finally something for this PNM to be proud of. Now that is PRICELESS.
What the hell? Posted: 2009-10-30 02:59:00 AM
2 Million for a flag, pole and location. How much did they get on the wind. Yes people as we trinis say to comfort our souls "wah yuh go doo". I can hear you all weak people in society now, myself included at one time. By these outstanding issues the PNM should loose the next election, yeh right. The Gov't is wasting our tax payers money and we do nothing but fete. so sad.
$2M for flag Posted: 2009-10-30 09:03:00 AM
You don't have to go to university to see that the government don't really care about the people. People are suffering for water, roads, electricity and transportation. According to the government, paying $2M for a flag have priority over the basic needs of the people.
What? Posted: 2009-10-30 03:45:00 AM
I agree a flag is a symbol of a Nation, distinct and undeniable. However the statements regarding costs are symptomatic of all that is wrong with Trinidad. How come they did not give the T&T cricket or Football associations $2M instead? Do they not generate national pride on a world stage. I am worried that the non chalant statement such as what is a little $2M here or $10 M there are irresponsible and... what will happen when the money does run out? Hunt, you like Martin Joseph, Narace and moreover Imbert and Manning and Teishiera needs to LEAVE.
I like priceless Posted: 2009-10-30 08:15:00 AM
It would seem as though with this Government everything is priceless. The Toruba stadium, the Schaborough hospital, the Prime Minister's residence, the Udecott projects, Calder Hart; they are all priceless. So I suppose we shouldn't look at these things that cost us billions but see it as priceless national pride. And instead just pay higher taxes in the future, higher insurance, and greater inflation while we gaze in awe of our priceless 2 million dollar 30 feet flag pole. That is indeed priceless!!
National Pride? Posted: 2009-10-30 08:35:00 AM
Why not hang a baliser then? Since all of you PNM ministers seem to think that national pride is reflected by your baliser tiepin. We need a lot more than a flag for national pride, let me tell you but what does Hunt know about that. Money buys everything except what is really needed.
National flag at stadium priceless Posted: 2009-10-30 10:13:00 AM
OMG..people suffering in the country and they are proud to say how much money they spend on a FLAG..why not put the money in the St.James Chemo/Radiation center. My brother have cancer he had surgery over two months now and guess what he cannot get chemo/radiation..every Monday he goes to the center and guess what the list is too long for him to get on. So he would have to die before he can be treated..what a shame. Mr. Hunt and others what is your main concerns, A FLAG OR PEOPLES LIVES...
National Flag Posted: 2009-10-30 10:16:00 AM
Where is the pride when citizens of this country has to lie on hospital floors and wait for hours, even days to receive medical attention. $2m cannot be justified for placing of a national flag at the Hasley Crawford stadium.
Here we go again Posted: 2009-10-30 09:05:00 AM
trinis only whine because they have a forum to do so,you all did not follow up with the increase of the poposed land taxes, and now a very expensive flag,I thought the government ran out of money, how is it possible they can take the people money and buy such an expensive flag, well Trinis I guess you all like Manning and his boys excluding Rowley, god bless you all
Priceless? Posted: 2009-10-30 05:50:00 AM
Oh pleeeeeze spare me. Do not insult people's intelligence. That response was dumb and shows there is no accountability and no respect for the taxpayers of T&T!
THE NEW PNM EXCUSE Posted: 2009-10-30 09:24:00 AM
Behold the new reason for wonton spending 'we cannot put a price on national pride', now you will see all Manning's primping will be considered a national service thus deemed necessary for 'national pride'. Just so that you know Mr. Hunt I was once filled with pride for my country and all it represented but thanks to the complete failure of you and your government I have nothing but contempt for my once beautiful country so my suggestion is to take down your 2 million dollar flag and try so save the citizens the PNM goverment have failed.
National flag Posted: 2009-10-30 09:24:00 AM
I don't usually agree with the minister but in this case I agree that it will be a symbol of national pride. I can only hope no one greased their pockets in the acquiring of this item
PNM Pride Posted: 2009-10-30 10:09:00 AM
It is a pity that the government's pride does not encompass providing a safe and secure environment for the citizens.
$2M national flag Posted: 2009-10-30 06:54:00 AM
Spending two million on a flag in a country where such monies could be channelled to fight the high crime rate or illeviate the high level of poverty can only be regarded as irresponsible. I wonder which hungry family can feel that national pride welling up in their empty stomachs....
Flag at stadium Posted: 2009-10-30 1:07:00 PM
I'm a foteign national who recently returned home on vacation.I must say that I did feel a sence of national pride when I saw the hugh flag at the stadium, as I have seen similar ones in the country where I now resides.
