THREE men, who were allegedly found in possession of a gun and ammunition that formed part of a cache of 13 guns stolen from the Mi5 security firm in Woodbrook, were yesterday denied bail.
Senior Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar said the prevalence of the crime and its seriousness led to her decision to remand the men into prison custody.
Leary Ferrier, Hayden Riley and Caesar Collins appeared in the Couva Magistrates’ Court. They are charged with possession of eight rounds of ammunition and two pistols at Southern Main Road, Couva. They are also charged with receiving a Smith and Wesson pistol and two pistol magazines, knowing they were stolen. The items were said to be valued at $5,500 and the property of an estate police company. The charges were laid indictably by Inspector Williams of the Port of Spain CID.
The pistols and ammunition were shown to the court. Police prosecutor Sharon Corbette said one of the guns, the one owned by the security firm, was registered, but the other one and the magazines would be taken to Special Anti-Crime Unit and then to the Forensic Science Centre in St James for further testing.
Attorney John Heath made a bid for Ferrier, 29, to be granted bail, saying he had no conviction. He admitted his client had ten pending matters.
’He had seven robbery with aggravation charges and three for armed robbery. It is all based on an allegation that ten persons were robbed at one location,’ Heath said.
Riley, who is also known as Hayden Thomas and ’Foots’, denied these names. He said he was known as Hayden Rahim. But Corbette said his fingerprints and Thomas’s were the same and Thomas had pending matters for robbery with aggravation, possession of marijuana and also possession of the drug for trafficking.
Collins said he had never been charged for any offence. He was represented by attorney Selwyn Ramlal.
Corbette objected to Ferrier being granted bail, since he was already on bail when charged.
Heath and Ramlal asked for disclosure.
The men will next appear in court on November 11.
