Siparia MP Kamla Persad-Bissessar left her office yesterday and joined Congress of the People’s Prakash Ramadhar in a ’Unity in Action’ meeting with the people in Penal.
’This is not about politics,’ she said, adding that the proposed property tax would adversely affect the lives of all citizens of the country.
Persad-Bissessar said it would push the cost of living higher and further deteriorate the quality of life.
’We must unite on this and get Government to withdraw their proposal,’ she said.
She said when the property tax was announced during the budget presentation in Parliament, United National Congress Opposition MPs were totally against it, and at the Congress meeting held last weekend. Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday called for national unity to prevent the proposal from becoming law.
’The PNM (People’s National Movement) want to tax the people to make up for their waste and squandering,’ she said.
Ramadhar took the first step by visiting the MP at her office and inviting her to join the walk against the newly-introduced property taxation. - See photo on Page 9
