Govt favours flag over child
COP slams '$2m' cost:

Taxpayers should not have had to pay more than $200,000 to $500,000 for the large 30-foot national flag at the Hasely Crawford Stadium at Invaders Bay, Port of Spain, that has reportedly cost $2 million, says Congress of the People (COP) deputy political leader Prakash Ramadhar.

Although the Government has neither confirmed nor denied the cost of the flag, Ramadhar alleged that the Government was valuing a flag more than a child who urgently needed $1.2 million for medical care.

’I would say it’s corrupt. If you’re going to get something for $200,000 and even that to $400,000 or $500,000 in no way from those who know about these things should it have cost $2 million,’ Ramadhar said.

He did so during a news conference yesterday at the COP’s Operations Centre at Charlieville, Chaguanas which was held after the party’s monthly national council meeting.

He spoke of a child in need of medical attention whom he did not identify.

’And the reason I spoke about the price of a child’s life is that today I know a child is dying in want of $1.2 million. This is not the first child, we have had one who died already and this Government did nothing to help and these are the painful things that we hear on the ground. Are they spending our tax dollars to fund UDeCOTT and to waste more millions or are they going to use our money to truly benefit our people and in particular our children,’ Ramadhar said.

During last Thursday’s post-Cabinet news conference, Sports Minister Gary Hunt said in response to a question on the reported $2 million cost for the flag that one cannot put a price on national pride but did not confirm how much taxpayers paid for it.

$2million for a flag? God please step in and rescure us from Manning
National Flag Posted: 2009-11-01 9:05:00 PM
This is OUR NATIONAL FLAG and if the Government want to spend $10 Million on it, so what.... where is our pride, I am living overseas for two years and in this country on every Government or Government associated building there is a HUGE FLAG. Thats our National Stadium and I expect the best to be flying there
Re: National Flag Posted: 2009-11-02 07:50:00 AM
Excuse me..of what good is a flag. Your argument has no merit.A flag does not bring pride to a country. If that is all it takes then every country should just hang flags and sit back. We are just going to beam with pride when we see a flag, according to you. In my opinion, flag be damned. Give me good healthcare, education, no crime, and lower food prices and then I would have some pride in my country. A flag represents a country and pride is had in the country not the actual flag.
Re: National Flag Posted: 2009-11-02 08:35:00 AM
All you might need is a flag but there are those of us who need more, who expect more and who deserve more. That is why this PNM Government can get away with anything - we as a people still think like a banana republic. Nowadays the standards are higher and we demand that the Government stop wasting money on irrelevant window dressing and get us beds in our hospitals and medicines in the pharmacy. Give us a better transportation system etc. Trinidad and Tobago's flag must represent a lot more than just wasting money for me to have any pride by just seeing it. To me it represents hell to those of us unfortunate enough to have to live here.
Re: National Flag Posted: 2009-11-02 4:07:00 PM
How much pride do you have living abroad? Do you plan on returning to Trinidad to live? I didn't think so.
Re: National Flag Posted: 2009-11-02 4:36:00 PM
Well send money to help pay for it
Flag Posted: 2009-11-02 02:53:00 AM
Why on earth is PNM getting away with this stupidity? It's obvious even for the animals in zoo that so much money is being wasted on their shift. People asking questions, you elected them so they have the responsibilty to do their jo ensuring T & T stability and growth. What a joke
Govt favours flag over child Posted: 2009-11-02 00:46:00 AM
That is a lot of money to spend on a flag, while the citizens of T&T have to wait for hours to get a bed at the hospital or even to see a doctor in an emergency. School children need books, people need homes, and a flag of a lesser cost could be found if they government wants to. This price is way too much to spend on a flag, which will wear and tear in time. Put that money to something useful. Use that money to allay the tax burden on home/land owners. Stop robbing the poor of the land, and use the taxpayers money wisely. This is not too wise.
"Government" won’t own up..Of course no..Cloak and Dagger acquisition again Posted: 2009-11-01 11:31:00 PM
In this circumstance who is the Government? is it a collective body of people, or someone individually representing "The Government?” I am definitely sure that the Government in this case was not representing the “People”. If the citizens had a chance to vote on purchasing a flag for that exorbitant price I am sure there would have been more nays than yeas. I wish instead of hiding behind a Collective shield, someone in particular would stand up and said I or we naming individual names of those who came up with the idea to purchase a flag of that exorbitant price. There is some grey matter here and I prefer to comment based on facts. I can only imagine that a flag 30 feet in length costing that much money may have been woven with golden thread. To Mr Gary Hunt I can only stipulate that there is a thin line between National pride and International Stupidity, as my mother used to say, ”Learn manners when you are addressing intelligent people”. $2m flag Posted: 2009-11-02 07:19:00 AM
why would a small suffering country like trindad spend that kind of mone on a flag and besides what is the flag made of....... to be costing that much.
Govt favours flag Posted: 2009-11-02 07:00:00 AM
Clearly an expenditure many find a disgusting waste of our money, but you just know that Commonwealth Leaders are expected to pass close enough to see it. How can they not be in absolute awe of our illustrious government.
Truly Sickening Posted: 2009-11-02 10:43:00 AM
Forget the whole issue of corrupt when it comes to this flag. It is downright shameless that any government could spend such a large sum ($2M or any part thereof) to erect a flag that really did not need to go up. There are so many other things that need attention and priority - well before erecting an overly-expensive sign of national pride. Give me a break Minister Hunt. Even you yourself seemed to have a look of shame as you muttered those words in response to the question about the cost. This is truly sickening!!!
Cost Posted: 2009-11-02 09:15:00 AM
a US 30ft flag cost about $4000US...so what type of flag would you get for $2m tt? Outragous........
Great is the PNM and HE shall prevail Posted: 2009-11-02 09:44:00 AM
This is what the way he thinks. You all goodly PM is wanting to become the nxt Chavez, people look out.
Bogus! Posted: 2009-11-02 09:47:00 AM
where have our priorities gone. i read the article of the little girl who needed medical assistance recently and how her mother was trying hard to raise the $100,000 US to pay the argentine doctors to do this operation but so far has come up short with $10,000 US. In a Land where we are blessed you would think Trini people would have compassion. The Government is a lost cause too and what they WILL REAP what they SOW. People "wake up and smell the coffee." Can we really have national pride(much less sleep) by buying a 2 million flag while a child is dying!
Flag price Posted: 2009-11-02 12:39:00 AM
What national pride is Gary Hunt talking about, when Hasley Crawford, Steel Pan and the likes have suffered and continue to suffer...what pride?? they are all too corrupt...
Govt favors flag over child. Posted: 2009-11-02 11:20:00 AM
Papa yo the more you live is the more dotageness you see and hear in this coutry. This is outrageous and proves that Gary Hunt and others in government do not care about the welfare of the people. Such nonsense spending two million dollars on a flag. Its not your money Mr Hunt so why not waste it? People cant get decent health care and you wasting, wasting I say, money on stupidness! National pride you say? Well Sir, National pride is the pride and care we take to provide for our peoples health, education, and safety. National pride is our children and grandchildren and their futures. They should fire everybody who approved this waste of our money starting with you Gary Hunt.
Govt favours flag over child Posted: 2009-11-02 11:23:00 AM
The PNM government should know that we can still wave our flag with pride at the stadium for a trivial amount, and could have spent that money on our much needed hospitals shortfalls, and you think they will care about a child who is not even old enough to vote
Gov't favours flag Posted: 2009-11-02 12:13:00 AM
$2 million for a flag while the poor are struggling to keep their heads above water. It's just absurd.
2Million for Flag Posted: 2009-11-02 1:35:00 PM
Blame Basdeo Panday and His Colleague Mr Maharaj, they had all the Chance to make a Difference in T&T bit neglected the fact they were scrutinized carefully by the PNM, they were too Comfortable and taught they were on top of the world. Now Live with what you all as leaders of the people have brought on a little Nation, Poverty, Racism, Criminals and hoodlooms who could walk in a Police station and Shoot a Prisoner, Too late Too late shall be the Cry, You Like It So as the calypso goes
Classic Marie Antionette Posted: 2009-11-02 1:39:00 PM
Why don't they eat cake. People are dying on the streets, in their homes and in the hospitals but we spend mone on a flag. Please people, take a leaf out of the chinese workers' book - stage a national protest. Get a backbone. This government treats us like we are idiots and that they can do as they please because we don't know any better. What an insult from the likes of Manning, Hunt and Joseph!
$2M Flag?? Posted: 2009-11-02 3:15:00 PM
My concern is not so much how much the flag costs, since I am sure somewhere in each Ministry's budget plans, consideration will be given to various types of expenditure. My main issue and source for concern is that too many other more important matters are being ignored right in the National Stadium whilst the ink on the cheque for this purchase is still drying. I had the unfortunate experience of visiting our Hasely Crawford Stadium twice since the "renovations" were completed and I must say I was thoroughly and utterly disgusted and disappointed to realise that the washroom facilities appeared to be untouched in the midst of all the other works that had been undertaken. My first visit to the stadium was for one of T&T's World Cup Qualifier games and I must admit, the first thing I wanted to do was check whether the washroom facilities had been updated; but to my surprise absolutely no attention was paid to this area; not even a fresh coat of paint. The toilet facilities at the stadium have been less than acceptable for too many years and when news of the planned upgrade was released, I felt sure that if nothing else, the washrooms would be outfitted with new fixtures and fittings to alleviate the woes that patrons have had to endure over the years whenever attending events at this location. Toilets flooded and overflowing with feces and urine, insufficient or in most instances no bathroom tissues, no hand soap for washing of hands (in these times of the H1N1 epidemic?. It's all quite disgusting to me a Trinidadian to the bone, much less how it would affect a non resident/citizen. Come on Ministry of Sports (or Sport Company of Trinidad & Tobago) you really need to do much better than this. Give us something for which we could really feel a deep sense of national pride.
even $200,000 is ridiculous Posted: 2009-11-02 1:53:00 PM
for a flag? that's just ludacris! as someone already rightly said "national pride" should be based on real things like healthcare, low crime and productivity...not a foolish flag!

what happen to other objects of national pride...the magnificent 7 buildings are in complete disrepair
THIS IS FOOLISH Posted: 2009-11-02 11:09:00 AM
If this job was given to a few of our talented carnival costume-makers,or a Cepep employee who knows about printing "T" shirts, the cost would be less than $5,000 T@T dollars. This has to be corruption in some form.Aubert Modeste
Re: THIS IS FOOLISH Posted: 2009-11-02 3:16:00 PM
No kidding, every project passes through the PNM government costs millions, sometimes billions of dollars, it can be something simple as fixing a pothole on the road
flag uproar Posted: 2009-11-02 3:08:00 PM
silly folks...........we all will write and rave about the alleged cost then the gov't will state the actual price and we will feel silly. allyuh not used to these tricks yet??
RE: FLAG UPROAR Posted: 2009-11-02 4:38:00 PM
It's not foolish for people to think and express their thoughts. Most of us are quite familar with the P.N.M.tricks,We are also in discussion with information disseminated, whether,it's accurate,or false.Feelings of any form of stupidity,or foolishness is not measured or considered by people, who are wise enough to know the risks involved in any discussion. It's the freedom of expression rights.Ok Sir/Madam? So feel free to continue your expressions too.Aubert Modeste
