'An innocent among police killings'

The police killings of criminal suspects are being commended by citizens, but among those killed is an innocent person, says the wife of a man shot dead.

Brenda Lee said her husband George Ashby, who was killed in January, was a victim of mistaken identity.

Ashby, a handyman working with at the Tabaquite Composite School, was shot near his home at Tabaquite on the night of January 23. He was driving home from a ’cook up’ at the school, when he was killed.

Police claimed they were in the area on a report about a car with suspicious men.

The police claimed someone shot from the car, and they fired back.

Police said Ashby was found dead, and the other man ran.

The people of Tabaquite said the police lied about everything, and that the only item in Ashby’s car was a weed whacker protruding from a window.

Ashby was the third person to be killed for the year.

The killings at Carlsen Field on Wednesday of three men who abducted jeweller Imran Mohammed Khan, took the police killing toll to 35 people this year.

The killing of the three has found widespread support among people fed up with the criminals.

But in Ashby’s case, his friends and neighbours are outraged.

Two police officers are subjects in an ongoing investigation into his death.

Acting Police Commissioner James Philbert said on Thursday that a report on the probe was pending.

He said: ’I expect to get that in a short time. That file is held up because of forensic results that we need to have. But it is well on the way.’

When Ashby’s car was released to family five months after his killing, relatives found a spent shell while cleaning the vehicle. The shell was handed over to investigators.

Ashby’s wife said on Friday: ’I keep calling the investigator. I think they are taking too long. The police said they will come back to talk to the witnesses again before going to the DPP’ (Director of Public Prosecutions).

Lee said Ashby’s killing had destroyed her faith in the law.

’They shoot my husband, an innocent man, but in Rio Claro when they killed (Peter Garcia at the courthouse) they couldn’t do nothing. Don’t let my husband die for nothing,’ she said.

CASUALTIES ARE THE RESULTS OF ANY CONFLICT. Posted: 2009-11-01 5:39:00 PM
May I First express my deepest empathy to Mrs.Ashby upon the death of her husband. If he was indeed innocent it was an unfortunate incident and nothing but God could ever bring him back. If he was guilty and events happened as the Police said it did then what we have here is a situation which sends the message to Criminals and would be criminals that :" The Police Have ""loosed the dog"" and they are not stopping" until every last one of you scum are driven from the face of the Earth or locked safely behind bars or has been blessed with enough sense to run from TNT and hide and do not ever come back here! Let us be quite upfront and frank about the situation which obtains in TNT: IT IS A CONFLICT BETWEEN THE FORCES OF EVIL ( THE CRIMINALS) AND THE FORCES OF GOOD ( THE DECENT AND UPRIGHT LAW ABIDING CITIZENS. "To be successful, an aggressive counter-criminal insurgency campaign we must minimize civilian casualties and collateral damage" The only thing that stands between the Criminals and us is the Law Enforcement agencies in TNT which includes the Police Service. Let us face it: In every Conflict there shall be Civilian Causalities. The most that Law Enforcement could do is seek to the best of their ability to Minimize the Civilian casualties and we,the Civilian population need to assist the Law Enforcement agencies in that endeavor by fully co-operating with them when they have search and destroy crime and criminals element exercise. It will be easy for us if we understand that the Law Enforcement officers are not looking for us! Mistakes will be made because the Law Enforcement agencies are not perfect and they fight against a ruthless and cowardly beats who will hide among innocent folks and try to turn every single error the police make into an instrument to blunt and deter the positive and extremely aggressive offensive of Law Enforcement against them. Let us not fall into that trap! Look at the figures! 450 people murdered last year and look at the figures of Innocent people murdered for the year! If the police only shot 35 of them in self defense then they need to increase the offensive to force them out of their lairs into the police net and if they refused to surrender and attack the police then it is lead poisoning for them! So let us not inject inquiry into the was because the police are working on it but let us focus on the yearning of every decent and upright citizen of TNT at home and abroad for an end to the reign of Criminal dominance of of great country! Go get um boys! Show no mercy!
innocent man? Posted: 2009-11-02 03:35:00 AM
When shots are fired from a vehicle or even from a building, there is no way to tell who the real gunman/men are until the smoke has cleared. It is possible that there was alone gunman but under the circumstance what was the police to do. if you know your friend / brother/sister or anyone walks with a gun, walk away from them. they are the ones who put your life in danger

As an observer the society needs to be careful of the way sentences are meted out regardless of the sometimes heinous nature of the crimes. Though it may seem as being the ultimate deterrent in a society that has become riddled by fear and crime the rule of the judiciary still needs to be upheld for us to be regarded by the wider world as a progressive civilised society. As is the case in many third world countries, we are juxtaposed between the need to achieve recognition of a first world nation, while still encompassing all that is truly developing .If we examine the “ developed countries”, we will see that there is a resource draining social infrastructure providing an insurance policy against the social decay which has plagued most third world countries from Mexico to Somalia and Eastern Europe in between. To neglect the effective operation of the judicial system and rely on the operations of effective kangaroo courts, in which by default the majority of the victims could be of either ethnic divide, can denigrate into further malaise that will not be beneficial to the society on the whole. As the Commissioner of police has rightly said in the aftermath of the shootings, there is a always a story to be told. The legal system must swiftly incarcerate those who have committed, but please let this be the court of law, we have psychologically overcome an era of lynching to which we should never return.

I am not sure about the detailos in this case. When people shoot at police they should be considered dead. Police are human beings just like you and I and have family to return to. So when you point the gun say your last pray and say good bye.......no need for you to point anymore gun.....play with gun and pay the price....

Is this what we have come to? Citizens praising the killing of suspect by the police. Have we forgotten the days of Ransdy B and the Flying Squad and why they were disbanded. I know people feel under siege by the skyrocketing crime in Tnt, but think very carefully if you want the police to be judge, jury, and executioner. It carries the same argument used against the death penalty. Once you kill an inncocent man there can no be compensation. JT

My sympathies to the Ashby family. It is indeed traumatic to have your loved one snatched away in a case of mistaken identity. It is better that ten guilty men go free than one innocent man die, especially if that innocent person is you or your spouse or child. To all those without a heart for this grieving family - "shame on you". TnT is becoming a barbaric land where no one cares about the other. If it was their relative they would not be making the same callous insensitive statements. Let us wage war against the criminals by cleaning up the justice system. The government is responsible for ensuring the rule of law and so far they have failed! mfb

I could'nt agree with you more.If that young man was innocent our heart goes out to the family .but go get them boys ( even though some are those who are there to protect us)
AN INNOCENT AMONG THE KILLINGS. Posted: 2009-11-02 1:59:00 PM
Yes,there is a valid concern, about this dilema. When you are acting in concert with others committing a crime, this is definitely a possibility,if a shoot-out ensues. What is more alarming and are of more concern,is if the shooting by cops is intentional.By this I mean,if the cop knows he should not have discharged his weapon, but did anyhow, then goes to all "lenghts" to cover it up,or justify it through deceit and fabrications.Once this starts then there is no stopping. It's like stealing,or cheating, etc. What is required is self-policing,where the officers make every effort to do the right thing and if a mistake is made, admit the mistake. The only way to accomplished this is to have undercover Officers working along with the regular officers. This way they would never know who is who.Until the Police Management team can implement this type of safeguard,(internal "shopping service")this would always be a unfullfill wish. The best guideline for Officers who are honest and sincere in carry-out their duties, would be to adopt the "when in doubt,do not shoot".This was and still is the guide that the "Good Officers" in N.Y.P.D.use to try and do the right thing.Hope it can help the good officers in T@T.Aubert Modeste.

"The police claimed someone shot from the car, and they fired back". Why is that the police ALWAYS say/allege that the suspects fired first. If someone fires upon the police first, wouldn't there be spent shells or at least holes in the police car? They (the Police) also said Ashby was found dead, and the other man ran. So you mean to tell me since January 2009, the police have not caught the suspect or do not have any leads as to whoever "the other man is". Only in sweet TnT people.
