After threats, German engineer killed, buried

TWO women and two men are currently assisting the Tobago Homicide Bureau with investigations into the sister island’s latest murder.

German national Peter Taut was discovered around 4.30 p.m. on Saturday in a shallow grave at his Bacolet Crescent home where he and his estranged wife Henny lived.

Taut lived a few houses away from where British couple Peter and Murium Greene were left for dead after a brutal cutlass attack on August 1.

Taut, an engineer, had travelled between Tobago and Germany for the past nine years and was planning to sell his home and move back to his homeland and reconcile with his wife.

His plans were thwarted by his killers who, according to a friend of Taut’s, were not after his money, since he was not financially stable.

A close friend of the family told the Express that the engineer was threatened by the ex-wife of a friend.

This prompted Taut to move out of the area.

He returned four months ago and was in the final stage of selling his home in a bid to re-unite with his wife.

Police were alerted to his death after friends of Taut made calls to the police after they were unable to reach him since Saturday.

The killing comes on the heels of the Tobago House of Assembly recently putting several measures in place to increase tourist arrivals to Tobago.

His killing brought the murder toll on the island to 11 for the year so far.

Tobago murder Posted: 2009-11-01 9:45:00 PM
Something is terribly wrong in T & T. When will the prime minister adress this matter seriously? It's been a few years now with more murders, and all they think about is increasing the number of tourist arrivals. But if you can't secure their safety why the hell do you invite people at all?
He just don't know what to do Posted: 2009-11-02 02:57:00 AM
Ah, Tobago is PNM country and yet Minister Joseph is at wit's end to curb the spiraling murder rate. He should resign.
continuing murders on tobago Posted: 2009-11-02 05:25:00 AM
These continuing murders on Tobago will do wonders for the island's tourism promotion. If people haven't decided to leave the industry yet this further incident should help persuade them. Its obviously downhill from here as the local culture follows the trinidadian model.

What is happening to that once peaceful island of Tobago. Why are people getting killed there so often. Now that there is a new person at the head of the police department, I hope he can find the killers of this man and bring them to justice. This senseless killing must stop. Tobago is much too small to have so many murders. Eleven for the year is way too many. Mr. Prime Minister, what are you doing about the crime situation in the country? It seems like you have lost your credibility with the criminials. They are not even listening to you anymore.
German killed in Tobago Posted: 2009-11-02 05:42:00 AM
Are the police considering that there might be a serial killer in Tobago who seems to be going after foreigners living there? This is really outrageous!
German killed and buried Posted: 2009-11-02 07:21:00 AM
When foreign residents and visitors are brutally murdered on that tiny island of Tobago; does that not send a message to the outside World? Especially when robbery is not the motive!!!!
German killed...... Posted: 2009-11-02 07:28:00 AM
How come this massacare did not make front page news???
German engineer killed and buried. Posted: 2009-11-02 09:13:00 AM
Why is it that Tobago civil servants and natives are not too co-operative towards foreigners and even Trinidad visitors? Is it because "DEM LIKE IT SOOOO"? Perhaps they should be given their independance with their own flag and currency!!!
Terrible! Posted: 2009-11-02 09:45:00 AM
This is so terrible. We are breeding animals!!! STOP! for heaven's sake!!
Engineer killed and buried. Posted: 2009-11-02 10:17:00 AM
Is there a connection between this crime and the Green's incidennt? In a news report after the Green's incident, did'nt Ms. Green said that their attackers had a forieng accent? Check it out guys.
Re: Engineer killed and buried. Posted: 2009-11-02 11:40:00 AM
well the greens say they coming back to tobago ,well if this dont change their minds ...nothing will
No action Posted: 2009-11-02 11:43:00 AM
As is expected, nothing will be done. This man is now a statistic and will remain as one since nothing will change and no action taken as usual. It seems to be the inevitable end to the growing problem of unsolved crimes plaguing the once beautiful conuntry, to which the current PNM administration is obviously blinded to. A sad state of affairs.
Sad Story for all foreingers Posted: 2009-11-02 11:46:00 AM
They enjoy hanging out wtith foreigners and taking their money, doing terrible things. This is so very sad. My condolences to all.
Be Careful Posted: 2009-11-02 11:47:00 AM
Anyone can imitate a foreign accent to throw off the police. be careful who you befriend on these islands.

german man killed in tobago Posted: 2009-11-02 07:27:00 AM
It was only 5 weeks ago I sat and had a beer with Peter, and he was so depressed with the state of Tobago, and could not wait to leave Tobago. Im totaly shocked! when will they realise they have a serial killer on the island.
Re: tobago murders Posted: 2009-11-02 08:00:00 AM
Why are we so quick to blame the people of tnt for these murders.Of all the foreign nationals living in tnt how many has had their criminal history checked before being granted residency. If we are allowing foreign nationals to reside in this country who had a terrible criminal past then what else can we expect. The people of tobago are to remain innocent until proven guilty. We should not quickly jump to conclusions and tarnish peoples innocence
German Murdered in Tobago Posted: 2009-11-02 1:21:00 PM
SAD! SAD! When will something be done to curb the crime situation in T&T. I thought at one time Tobago was a bit safe. I was planning a trip there next June for my 10th anniversary but now, I am not certain. Sad. Concerned - NY
We like it so Posted: 2009-11-02 1:21:00 PM
It is our own fault for the state the country is in. Until Trinbagonians learn what accountability is we will never move forward
Peter the Dog Lover Posted: 2009-11-02 3:01:00 PM
I knew Peter and Henny well, we used to meet them walking their 7 dogs on Minister Bay beach. Peter was a nice quiet guy and they were big donors to the Tobago TTSPCA, they adored and were kind to rescued pot-hound dogs (adopting many). He was maintenance manager at a famous nearby hotel and also imported German products for bars to sell. People like him brought trade, kindness and prosperity to the people of Tobago and look how they repay him. Terribly sad.
