CHILD BURNS TO DEATH

TRAGIC LOSS: Khris Ramkhelawan

ALL that remained of six-year-old Khris Ramkhelawan were his burnt bones after the car in which the boy was a back-seat passenger burst into flames after slamming into a guard rail along the Southern Main Road near Trantrill Road, Spring Village.

Khris was asleep on the back-seat of the car, a Mazda 323, driven by his father, Anthony Ramkhelawan.

Ramkhelawan was heading north along the main road around 3 a.m. yesterday when his car came into contact with a green Nissan Sunny heading in the opposite direction

Both cars barely touched each other.

But it was enough to send Ramkhelawan’s vehicle into the railing placed to protect and guide vehicles from going into the nearby river.

The railing was ripped out its base by the impact.

The impact caused the car to burst into flames.

Khris was trapped in the vehicle and burnt to death while his father and a front-seat passenger Rikki Mukesh escaped with minor injuries.

When the Express visited the scene, the area where the car caught fire was marked by ashes, broken glass, a broken guard rail and the remnants of the car.

A burnt shirt was discovered several feet away from the spot where the crash happened.

Curious drivers slowed down to take a look at the accident.

Ramkhelawan cried at his Lilly Trace home at Siparia yesterday morning when the Express visited.

’I couldn’t save Khris. He didn’t deserve to die. He was such a happy child. If only I had a little more time to pull him to safety,’ he said.

Relatives gathered to console the bereaved father.

Surviving the blast that followed, Ramkhelawan, 38, said he visited relatives and was returning home when the accident occurred.

He said he remembered crossing the Caroni Bridge and the cars colliding.

’I was knocked out for a while and when I recovered I tried to get out of the car,’ he said.

He said that his shirt was caught and he was struggling to remove it when the car exploded.

’There was no time to save my son,’ he said.

The Caroni Presbyterian School pupil was on a weekend visit with his father when the accident occurred.

Passenger Mukesh, of Penal, escaped the blaze.

The driver of the Nissan also escaped uninjured.

A relative of the dead child, Denise Rooplal, said that Khris was the most loving child.

’He was the baby in the neighbourhood. He went from house to house and everyone loved him,’ she said.

She said that his parents separated when he was a baby and his mother went to live in Longdenville.

Just recently Khris went to live with his mother and came home every weekend to stay with his father, she added.

Sad: because when I hear the news that a the six year old child burnt to death I felt hurt as though I am going to cry. because watch that picture of that child and the father who was saying: I tried to save my child but I could not: I suffered bad burns on my back. They said that the family was distraught to speak to the media.
REDICULOUS Posted: 2009-11-01 11:53:00 PM
Let me guess, he was driving a foreign used piece of crap, the other driver did not try to help. Keep on speeding and not drive defensively in Trinidad.

My condolences to the family, but why is a 6 year old child in a car at 3 am??? And, according to other reports, the child (as usual) was in the front seat. It is time that parents be held legally accountable for these poor decisions. Must yet another child be sacrificed on the altar of adult responsibility?

this story brings tears to my eyes. I find it so strange now that very often now that you hear about an accident the vehicle bursts into flames maybe someone can look into this.

Cars catching fire Posted: 2009-11-02 08:23:00 AM
There seems to be a problem with cars bursting into flames after having been involved in accidents. I think it warrants an investigation o these cars to see if they meet the minimal safety standards or if were are being sold 'rubbish' by these foreign used dealers.

child burnt to death Posted: 2009-11-02 2:11:00 PM
My prayers go out to the family especially the mother because i am a mother of 3 myself. Also first of all it's very sad that such a young child had to die. Secondly if that were me i would have died with my baby becuase there would be no way i was going to leave him behind. he should have gotten out first or at the same time! Lastly never travel with kids at night. Duh. Common sense.

Child Burns to Death Posted: 2009-11-02 1:13:00 PM
People, People, slow down on the roads. Trinidadians drive too fast. What is the hurry, and at 3:00 am in the morning with a child? Every accident in T'dad, speed have something to do with it. I am not Trini but I visit there often with my wife and there are times I am so scared at the rate some of these drivers drive. Too much speed. My heart goes out to this family. May they find comfort at this time. Concerned- NY
