PM: Meeting was Panday's idea

Today’s meeting between Prime Minister Patrick Manning and Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday, which will be held at the Diplomatic Centre in Port of Spain, was at the insistence of Panday, Manning told reporters at the end of a walkabout in his San Fernando East constituency.

Manning said, ’It was Panday’s idea and I did not hesitate to agree with him.’

He said the discussion will centre around crime and constitutional reform and Attorney General John Jeremie will be present at the meeting.

Manning said the request by Panday was timely because ’there are many issues that will be brought before the National Security Council when it meets next.’

Manning said another reason why he accepted the proposition by the Opposition Leader was because it came at a time when he has completed his round of political education.

As far as constituency matters were concerned Manning said, ’Throughout the constituency the cry was the same. The need for houses and more houses.’ He said at no time was the question of unemployment raised among his constituents.

Yesterday’s walkabout was the third in a series started two weeks ago by the party. Manning said the idea was to keep abreast with constituents on what is going on in the country.

At yesterday’s walkabout there were fewer uniformed police officers.

The next walkabout is planned for Wednesday in Cocoyea South, one of the PNM’s strongholds.

PANDAY AND MANNING OWES T@T Posted: 2009-11-02 10:35:00 PM
Maybe they are "putting" their heads together to figure out how to cancel-out their liabilities towards the country. These two are pros in scheming.Aubert Modeste

Why is it that a simple thing as having a meeting has to escalate to "it is not me" intrigue? Yesterday I read of Manning calling Panday to bring his concerns now I am reading is Panday approaching Manning in the first place. Which is which?
PM and Panday....strange bedfellows! Posted: 2009-11-03 10:05:00 AM
Steuppppps! This is deja vu. They met already on the same issue and the outcome of that meeting is the escalation in crime. I hope they discuss the strategy for both of them to ride off into the sunset and allow our country to breathe. These two, Panning and Manday are two peas in a pod and they are stifling us. They have done their time and we thank them for it, now is the time for them to pass the baton and I hope that they do this soon as they become part of the problem.
Most of the people in the UNC DO NOT WANT PANDAY TO REPRESENT THEM. Posted: 2009-11-03 09:05:00 AM
Panday cannot be trusted and for that reason most people do not wnat him to represent them.
PM Meeting Posted: 2009-11-03 04:23:00 AM
While the two leaders meet, the core of their discussion is not yet known. Why haven't any one in parliament especially the opposition brought up term limits? No PM should be given the opportunity to govern for more than two terms. They are talking constitutional reform but avoiding the real issues.Obviously we don't a Chavez style government or Manning in government for life. We itely need term limits and a provision for impeachment in the event the Executive President violates the law of the land. Without check and balances, we are at the status quo.
Re: PM Meeting Posted: 2009-11-03 08:36:00 AM
Yes, I think talk should be on PMs serving only two terms. Give others a chance. Remember Clinton was a good President and he could not go for more than two terms, unlike Mr. Manning, he should be booted out a long time ago.
PM's meeting with Panday Posted: 2009-11-03 10:08:00 AM
Do not be fooled, people. At this stage of his march towards African style dictatorship the PM will meet with anyone. He is determined to maintain the facade of consultation and cooperation. In the final analysis, he will declare, of course, that he has received no cooperation from the other side. Once that posture is made public, the PM will have cleared the way for his undemocratic regime.
