Gang fight at beach; supervisor shot dead

A mechanical supervisor who retreated to Los Iros Beach in Erin for a day of relaxation was shot dead when a fight broke out between two rival gangs in the area.

Dail Simmons, a father of two, was at the beach with two friends when some men began fighting around his van on Sunday evening.

Simmons, of Bennett Village, Santa Flora, dodged several glass bottles which were being used as missiles and got to his van, an eyewitness said.

But as he opened the door to get into the driver’s seat several gunshots were heard.

Simmons, 50, was shot twice in the head. He was taken to the Point Fortin District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His relatives insisted yesterday that Simmons was not involved in the fight. They said he was accidentally shot as he attempted to remove his van from the scene.

Four men who were injured during the fracas were up to last night being treated at the San Fernando General Hospital. Police said the men suffered chop wounds about the body. They were being questioned by investigators.

The area was cordoned off and worshippers who were observing the Hindu festival Kartik Nahan and other visitors to the beach were prevented from leaving the area for several hours by police. Several vehicles were searched, but up to last night no one was arrested.

An autopsy performed at the Forensic Science Centre in St James yesterday confirmed that Simmons died from gunshot wounds to the head.

Sgt John De Gannes of the Erin Police Station is spearheading investigations.

gang fight at beach... Posted: 2009-11-03 05:50:00 AM
Lord, people can't even go to the beach in peace! A good lesson...when you hear gunshots, innocent bystanders, forget about the material stuff that can be replaced like the car, watch etc. Hide your selves and save your lives.
Un timely killing Posted: 2009-11-03 06:09:00 AM
In this time of 'he was a good boy', it may be hard to believe that this man was not involved in the actually fraca. I could say that this man started from very humble beginnings, work his way up and remained humble. Its the usual for him to work hard all week and on weekends look for a bit of relaxation. For the years I have known him, he has just been a hard worker and and excellent father. Don't tarnish the name of an honest man.
Very Sad Posted: 2009-11-03 06:43:00 AM
sad. I prayer that the peace of God will comfort the hearts of the grieving family and friends. If this man were involved in the violent fight, he would not only have been shot but also chopped, just as the other four men. What is my peaceful nation coming to? I believe that very heinous crimes are propagated and sustained by deportees. I wonder what legals measures is the Government putting in place to deal with deportees who return to Trinidad and Tobago after learning sophisticated criminal behaviour in "so-called" First World Countries?"

But this is madness Posted: 2009-11-03 08:42:00 AM
Trinidad is now some kind of dystopic kleptocracy. Ordinary citizens, can't go to the beach, can't enjoy their hard earned possessions, can't run a business. Our daughters and sons are being raped and molested. our parents are being bullied and robbed, and we all live in fear behind our burglarproof doors. Trapped in our own homes, our lives indirectly run by thugs, murderes, rapists society's underacheiving underbelly. Our leaders are powerless to curb the downward spiral, our country is being dragged to hell and beyond. The crap must stop NOW (5 minutes ago) I urge the people of Trinidad to demand that some MAJOR measure be taken. TUTTA, OIL Workers, PTSC, AirPorts authority we NEED a MAJOR strike. Shut Trinidad down until something happens. WASA, cut the water to the prime ministers residence, let his toilet stink like the crime situation. T&TEC, cut his lights so that he may know the darkness in our own hearts. The drugs and guns must go, the hooligans and gansters must die. The wheels of justice must be greased and quickened. In the eyes of the world we look like a nation of savages...is this the legacy we want to leave...

What have we come to??? Posted: 2009-11-03 08:57:00 AM
Rest in peace to Mr Simmons and my condolences to his family. The state of affairs in TnT is tragic and sad to say the least. The ministry of National Security should be replace from top to bottom. Every citizen should be able to go the beach for a relaxing Sunday evening without having this kind of fear. Afterall, isn't this a free country? MR MANNING & MR JOSEPH???
