3-year-old boy electrocuted

parental pain: Larry Manswell, right, and Keisha Prime at their Sea Lots, Port of Spain, home yesterday following the death of their three-year-old son, Terrell Manswell. -Photo: ROBERTO CODALLO

A THREE-year-old boy was electrocuted on Sunday night as he crawled on the roof of his home to retrieve a ball.

The incident occurred at Sea Lots, Port of Spain, after the child came into contact with a live wire.

Terrell Manswell was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port of Spain General Hospital around 7 p.m. after he was taken for medical care.

The child’s parents, Larry Manswell and Keisha Prime, whose home is located just off the Beetham Highway about a stone’s throw away from the Port of Spain lighthouse, said they were too distraught to speak when the Express visited their home.

Manswell said he took his son to the hospital, ’but to tell you the truth, I eh really know what happened because I wasn’t there at the time,’ he said.

Another relative, however, told the Express that around 6 p.m. on Sunday, the toddler was seen playing football with some of his cousins not too far from his home.

Shortly before 7 p.m. his mother took him home, the relative said.

’We was down the road,’ said the relative, ’when we hear he get shock.’

She added that the boy was, ’accustomed’ to climbing on top the house.

’They carry him to hospital ... but when they watch at him he already dead already,’ she said.

Besson Street police are continuing investigations.

Painful! Always painful for the parents and for those of us who read these articles.

This is sad and my condolences to the family. My question, who was watching this child? Where was the adult(s) while this child was going atop the roof?

This is a very sad story. Who would allow a 3 year old, a toddler to climb onto a roof. This story sounds crazy. Parents are supposed to take of their children, and not leave them unattended. I hope the parents can find peace within themselves, because this did ont have to happen. Why were electrical wires loose on the roof. A loose electrical wire is like a loaded shot gun, and an accident waiting to happen. I feel sorry for the way the child died, and also for the parents, especially the mother.
You call this responsible parenting? Posted: 2009-11-03 07:14:00 AM
Just what in hell is a three year old child doing climbing up on top of a roof at 7:00 PM at night or at ANY time for that matter? You people have lost touch with reality down there in TnT. Both you and your country are a total disaster. Hold your heads in collective shame and disgust.

Lord have mercy, 3 year old at 7 pm on a roof? I hope no one mentions poverty because that does exonerate parents from child neglect.

Emergency Medical Care Posted: 2009-11-03 11:06:00 AM
T&T is so behind the times when it comes to the handling of medical emergencies. The typical public response is always to take the person to hospital versus checking their vital signs and administering CPR (cardio-pulmonary-resuscitation) immediately if needed. The brain dies after two minutes without oxygen. The appropriate action in this case would have been to call for an ambulance, and immediately start CPR to keep blood flow and oxygen to the child's brain and tissues until medical technicians could restart his heart and/or get him to hospital. Where were the guardians of this infant when he climbed onto the roof? Another news report states that this was a regular pastime of this child to play on the roof. Something is very abnormal about this scenario. Who in their right mind allows a child to play on the roof of the house. These parents were obviously ill-equipped to parent this child and should be dealt with accordingly. Brenda, Edmonds, WA
3 year old gone - WHY, WHY??? Posted: 2009-11-03 2:32:00 PM
Serious steps must be taken when it comes to these reports. Are there siblings? what about the other little ones who are used to these activities? Child Welfare Autorities must investigate this household. My stomach is sick, sick. Children are to be CARED FOR. They are NOT toys to be played with nor weeds to grow wild.
